 “Will you be my date?”

Did he just say date?

Date, as in, when a boy and a girl go out together, alone?

“Hello? Mi sun?”

Date, as in when a boy and girl take a stroll by the beach, holding hands?

“Mi sun, are you there?”

“ahh….” Was all I manage to say.

“I told you not to be shock.”

“Ne…”

“Let me explain.”

“O-okay.”

 “My cousin is turning 21 years old. He’s having a birthday party tomorrow.”

 Eh?

 “So I was wondering if you can come with me.”

Eh?

“Mi sun, are you sure you’re still on the phone.”

“Yes.”

“Okay.”

“Okay.”

“What?”

“What?”

“Stop copying me!” he laughs.

“I am not!”

Okay mi sun, calm down. Breath in, breath out. Yes that’s the way.

“So let me get this straight. Your cousin is having a birthday party and you want me to go with you.”

“Yes.”

“So basically, this is not a date right? It’s just a friend going for a friend’s cousin’s party.”

He didn’t answer me.

“Sunbae?”

“Y-yeah, you can say that.”

I don’t know why but I started laughing.

“Sunbae, please choose your words wisely next time. For a second I thought you were asking me out!”

“What if I was?”

“Eh? Come on, stop joking.”

“What if I’m not joking?”

“I know you are sunbae, that’s your specialty.”

“I’m serious.”

I stop laughing. His voice. It’s his serious voice. The voice he use when there are students misbehaving in music club.

My heart started beating fast again.

He can’t be serious right?

Then I heard him laughing.

“Aigoo mi sun! This is why I love teasing you.”

Idiot!

“So is it a yes, or no?”

“No.”

“Why?!”

“I hate parties.”

“Oh, but I’ll be there.”

“Why are you asking me? Don’t you have other friends?”

“Well i-”

“No wait.” I cut him off. “Why are you asking me to go to your cousin’s party all of a sudden? I don’t even know your cousin.”

Why am I feeling angry all of a sudden?

“erm… because I, er..”

“Is this another joke again?”

“No! The party is real! Okay, my cousin asks me to bring a date, so yeah.”

My heart skips a beat as I hear the word ‘date’.

“You can ask yoo jin,” I said without thinking.

“She’ll be there too.”

Great. You know how much I dislike that girl. How can you still ask me to go to the party?

“I know you both are not on good terms.”

We never were.

“But I really hope that you can come with me.”

“Why?”

“Because..just because.”

Just because? What kind of answer is that?

“Mi sun ah~”

Oh no, not that voice. He always uses this tone if he wants something.

“I’ll think about it.”

“Thank you!”

“Okay.”

We didn’t speak for a few seconds.

“Sorry if this is so sudden.”

“It is.”

“Sorry. I’ll see you in school tomorrow?”

“Okay. Good bye, sunbae.”

“Good bye. Think about it.”

“I will. Bye.”

I hung up before he replies me.

I find myself smiling. Date huh…

Should I go? There’s nothing wrong going to the party with him right? I mean, we’re just friends and he’s just being nice to his cousin. No harm going right?
