Chapter 1
Fix You"Sweetie, wake up." The older woman kept shaking the sleeping girl for a few minutes now, but she still won't get up. "Jessica, time to wake up, dear." She sat on the bed and started hitting her . "Five more minutes, please." She covered her face with one of her pillows, trying to block the suns rays that were piercing through her window, wanting to get more sleep.
"I already gave you five minutes, Jung Sooyeon. Get your off of the bed."
"But it's a Saturday." She started to whine, still with her eyes closed and a sleepy voice.
"We'll be going out today, remember? It's time for breakfast. Your grandfather's already waiting downstairs."
With that, her eyes became wide open and remembered that, yes, today's Saturday, which means that she promised her grandmother that she'll accompany her to the mall. "I'm up." Jessica sat herself up and saw her grandmother sitting beside her. "I'm up," she repeated. She hugged her grandmother and kissed her on the cheek.
"Good morning to you too, sleepyhead. Go get ready. We'll wait for you downstairs." The older woman went out of her granddaughter's room and joined her husband at the breakfast table.
"There's our sleeping beauty!" Her grandfather exclaimed with a smile as she showed up at the breakfast table.
"Good morning, harabeoji." Similar to how she greeted her grandmother, she gave the old man a kiss on the cheek before sitting down. She showed a slight smile for she was happy to see the waffles that were in front of her for breakfast.
"Your halmeoni told me that you, girls, will go shopping today."
"That's right! Our Jessica will have a day out with halmeoni." The older woman was smiling, excited for the day.
Jessica, on the other hand, don't seem to excited about today's activity, only showing half a smile. "We usually do this, halmeoni."
"I know, but of course I'm just happy and excited to spend the day with you." Grandma Jung smiled as she explained her excitement. She made it a point to take her granddaughter out on Saturdays. Sometimes, they'll be joined by her husband, but it was just her and Jessica most of the time.
She was munching on her waffles and She offered to wash the dishes when they finished eating, while her grandmother went upstairs to prepare, and her grandfather kissed both of them goodbye.
"You, girls, have fun!" Grandpa Jung smiled at her before leaving.
"Have fun golfing, harabeoji." Her smile was weak, but for her that was enough. Since the day of the accident happened, that's how far her smile would go. That was already big enough, she thought. She thinks she looks happy with it, so it was already enough. After washing the dishes, she went upstairs to prepare for her day out with her grandmother.
Jessica's been under her grandparents care for 12 years now and she also became fluent in Korean. She's been living in Korea, but her parents' house, which was automatically given to her when she was 18, is not yet on the market. It probably will never be sold. After the plane crash that took her family from her, she's only been back to San Francisco twice. Only because she had to go there to get some of her belongings and her grandparents had to fix everything. The first trip back to her hometown was two weeks after the crash and she was still shaking in her seat. Her grandparents asked her not to go, but she wanted to. "I have the house keys," that was her reason.
In her second trip back, she was feeling nervous. Again, her grandparents told her not to join them, but she insisted. She missed their home, but she misses the people who used to live with her there. In her very last visit, which was 7 years ago, she wanted to take all of her sister's Care Bears with her back to Korea, but she can't even look at them without getting teary eyed.
She remembers their tearful reunion the hospital. She was hugged tightly by her grandmother and s
