Busan memories

Overnight Love

Leaning your chin against the cold surface of your palms, your gaze trailed the fleeting scenery that was flying past the glass panels you were pressed against.  The wide ocean was tainted with a surreal deep blue that seemed to stretch far beyond the horizon; like it was infinitely endless. As the afternoon rays of sunlight fell upon the waves in amber touches, the entire ocean was bathed in shimmering lights that seemed to sparkle, even from a distance. You were absolutely captivated. "I've missed this", you whisper faintly to yourself, lips curling up in a smile as the wind sent a tendril of your hair flying across your face. A rich giggle floated through the air, as you fought to tame the tendrils of your brown locks that were mercilessly dancing in your face and blocking your view. Falling back, you slumped into the comfortable leather seat and heaved a sigh of contentment. Another giggle erupted, chasing away the silence in the air. The owner of the adorable laughter grinned as you scrunched your nose up in annoyance; a habit of yours that he thought was absolutely the cutest thing he had ever seen. Reaching his slender fingers towards you, he swiftly tucked away the tendril of hair falling over your almond shaped eyes. "Thanks oppa", you chimed as you turned towards him with a smile crowning your pink lips. Chuckling quietly, you reached towards him and gently brushed the red side swept bangs out of his eyes. As you started to draw your hand back, he grabbed your wrist with his free hand. Intertwining his long fingers with yours, he squeezed them lovingly before kissing the back of your hand. BTOB had finally ended a successful round of promotions for both Wow and I only know love, and the BTOB members had been given 2 weeks off before preparations for their next single would begin. The rest of the members had left a few days ago for their hometowns, eager to spend the precious week with their families that they missed so badly. Even Peniel had managed to hop on a plane back to Chicago, eager to be back in the presence of the people he loved, which you hoped included Seo Yeon. Min Hyuk and you however, were heading towards the small town of Busan to spend a few days at your mother's family home. The memories you had of living in Busan were fairly little, faded fragments of the things you had experienced as a young child. At the age of 5, your mother and you had moved to Seoul, leaving your maternal grandparents to tend the house back in your hometown.

As the car pulled up on the gravel driveway leading up to the familiar white-washed walls patterned with the intertwining veins of ivy, you couldn’t help but stare wide-eyed. “Are you just going to keep staring at it~ Come on, let’s go in” Min Hyuk teased, poking your cheek with his finger and grinning cheekily at you. He quickly went to the back of the car and unloaded the two luggages from the boot, carrying them towards the front door. A chime you recognised as one of those old Korean folk songs rang as you pressed the little red button beside the door. The door burst open as a petite woman stood in the doorframe, a huge smile on her face. Her greyish hair was tied up in a bun, and the wrinkles crowning her face a sign of beautiful aging. “Halmonieee!” You squealed just as she enveloped you in a big hug, wrapping her calloused hands around you. “My miyoung ah~ We’ve missed you so much. Look at you, how pretty you’ve become”, she cooed lovingly, pinching your cheeks gently. On cue, an older man appeared beside her, a pair of old golden glasses perched on his nose. “Harabeojii”, you chimed as you kissed his cheek, a wide smile on both of your faces. When the both of you pulled back, you realised that Minhyuk standing slightly behind you, still holding on to both luggages. “Ahh I forgot to introduce you all. This is Min Hyuk, my bro-“ “Your boyfriend, right?”, Halmonie suddenly interrupted, her eyes twinkling with joy. “EHHH?!!” You and Minhyuk both exclaimed at the same time. “Ho-how did you find out?” You stammered in shock. “Your mother told us”, harabeoji smiled as he patted your head before turning his attention to the boy beside you. “Omo! Jahlsengessuh~ Min hyuk ah~!” halmonie exclaimed as she patted Minhyuk’s shoulder affectionately. “Make yourself at home Minhyuk ah~ I finally have a grandson”, Harebeoji chuckled gruffly as he hugged the younger boy. Minhyuk shot you a smile, his eyes b with joy. “Minhyuk ah~ You can bring the luggages in, I’ll show you to both yours and Mi Young’s room”, Harabeoji said as he ushered Minhyuk into the house. You were about to follow him up the stairs when your grandmother stopped you. “Mi Young ah~ Could you help me bring these persimmons to Mrs Jung next door? She’d love to see you again too. You used to play with her son all the time when the both of you were younger”. You nodded with a smile, taking the box of bright orange persimmons in your arms. Stepping out onto the gravel-laden walkway, you tried to recall the boy that was supposedly your childhood friend. Images of when the both of you used to play at the rice-field behind your neighbourhood floated back into your memory. You could remember how he looked as a child, the brown hair that fell over his innocent looking eyes. Only, you couldn’t remember his name. Well, maybe it was time to take that trip back down memory lane.

Knocking on the purple door, you smiled at how Mrs Jung hadn’t changed much from how you remembered her. An oval shaped face, almond eyes and wavy brown hair. Even at the age of fifty, she was still a beauty. She invited you into her house, asking you questions about how you were fitting in with the Lee family back in Seoul, and the both of you managed to catch up over tea. You had almost forgotten how much of a motherly-figure she was, and even after so many years, she still treated you like the daughter she never had. “Ah, I almost forgot that my son’s back from Seoul too. He’d be happy to see you again”, she chimed brightly. At that moment, a figure descended the flight of steps by the living room, clad in a grey knitted sweater and jeans. “Ah-dul, you wouldn’t believe who came to visit. Mi Young, this is my son, Dae hyun”, Mrs Jung exclaimed as the boy drew closer. “Dae Hyun?!?” “Mi Young??!” “What are you doing here?” “I live next door” “Wait, so you’re the Mi Young from my childhood?” “You both know each other?” Mrs Jung stared wide-eyed at the both of you, as Daehyun nodded briefly. “We met back stage of a music program”, he explained with a small smile. “Well, I’ll leave the both of you to catch up”, she cooed, and then it was just the both of you left in the room.

“I can’t believe it’s you”, you gasped quietly; still in disbelief that Daehyun was that childhood friend of yours. “Why didn’t I recognise you?” You blinked in defeat, shoulders deflating slightly. “Hey, it’s not your fault. Plus, I changed a lot. For one, I’m not longer the chubby boy I used to be, and I can control my satoori now”, he joked good-naturedly as his deep brown eyes twinkled. Seeing the smile on his face, you couldn’t help but chuckle along. “So, what are you doing out here”, Daehyun asked. “Ah, Me and Minhyuk decided to visit my old family home. Visit my grandparents, and you know get away from the hustle and bustle of Seoul for a while”, you explained with a small grin. Daehyun nodded in understanding. “Your brother? That’s nice of him to come all the way out here with you”, Daehyun asked cautiously, a hint of tentativeness in his voice. “Yeah, we’re really close”, you shuffled nervously. Daehyun sensed the uneasiness in your voice but pretended not to notice. A few minutes later, you bid goodbye to your new found friend, not forgetting to express your gratefulness to Mrs Jung for the box of oranges she gave you in return.

As your slender silhouette disappeared down the Jung family’s cobbled path, Daehyun let his eyes linger on your disappearing figure. “I knew there was something familiar about you. Now that I’ve found you, I’m never going to forget you again”, he whispered softly, the words a hushed breath against the Chestnut-red leaves swirling in the autumn wind.
