Excerpt from the past: As Fate Would Have It

Overnight Love

Act One: Min Hyuk ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I slammed the door shut, with enough strength to send the loud noise resounding throughout the house. Sinking on the bed, I dropped my head to my lap as tears flowed down my face, each tear splashing angrily, dampening the cotton of my grey jumper. It was my 18th birthday, a day that was supposed to be a joyful, happy and memorable one. Well, at least the memorable part came true, though for the wrong reasons. Did they really have to pick this day to tell me? Then again, is there ever a right day to tell your son that he was adopted?! I still couldn't believe it. They weren't my real parents? Then why didn't my biological parents want me? Tons of questions flooded my mind, mixing with the countless emotions of loss, frustration and disbelief. I needed to get away from it all. Soon my feet found itself in front of the wardrobe as I pulled out a huge luggage, followed by clothes of all sorts that I haphazardly packed with my shaking hands. Pulling on a pair of jeans and a blue cardigan, I picked up my luggage roughly and trooped down the steps, ignoring the desperate cries of the attendants. Upon seeing my tear stained face and the stubborn anger reflected in my eyes, Alfie smiled at me sadly and whispered:"Be safe". Despite my eagerness to get away, I managed to give her a last brief hug. Alfie had been with the family for the longest time, and was practically like my second mother. Bless her soul, she understood me the most, and so she gave me one last kiss on my cheek, before letting me dash down the steps. Mum was crying uncontrollably, while Dad was holding her, his face crumpled into a sad but resigned frown. "I'm going", I exclaimed coldly, pushing past  mother, who was frantically blocking the door in an effort to stop me from leaving. Suddenly, dad reached over to hold mum back, gesturing towards the door. "Go", he whispered with a small smile, ignoring mum's sobs of protest. I nodded at him suspiciously. Why was he letting me leave so easily? "Come back soon, my son", he called out, making me freeze in my steps halfway through the courtyard. Son? A tear slipped down my cheek and i roughly wiped it away before running, running till the house was out of sight... That was how I found myself aboard a flight, towards my destination-Spain. As a child, I had always wanted to visit Spain. It's historic ties, architectural wonders and world heritage sites were a big attraction for me. I reckoned I deserved this trip, it was still my birthday after all. Staring out the window at the clouds dancing in the sky, I was going to forget my identity for this one week, and to think about what I would do with this dreaded discovery. Deep in thoughts, my hands wrapped around the cup of piping hot coffee on the tray, as my body relaxed with the warmth that was spreading from my hands to the rest of my body. With a heavy sigh, my eyelids fluttered close as I blocked out all the pessimistic thoughts, making way for the tempting enticement of sleep's sweet dreams.  Act Two: Mi Young/You ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Dear diary, I still can't believe this! I'm finally on my way to Spain after saving up for three years! I've always wanted to visit aunt who's living in barcelona, and this time I've even saved enough to go for a short tour to the other cities! Now I'll get to see all the beautiful places on the postcards that Aunt used to send me, including all the old cathedrals and ancient cities. So now I am on the airplane, and the screen says its five more hours till we land in espania~ I was a little afraid at first because it's my first time flying, and I'm doing it alone because we couldn't afford another ticket for mum. But thankfully things turned out fine, and aunt will be waiting for me at the arrival hall! I did have a little hiccup while boarding the plane though, and it's kind of embarrassing! Mum asked me to pack some kimchi and other dried foodstuff for Aunt and so I packed it all into a small luggage that I would hand-carry into the plane. But it was heavier than I expected, and I fumbled with it while trying to put it in the overhead compartment. Thank God for a boy who looked a little older than me, because he helped me put it away effortlessly with a kind smile. He's seating across the aisle, and dressed in a blue jacket. I know it's none of my business, but I can't help but notice that he looks really sad. Well, I'd better get some sleep because when we land, it'll be morning there in Spain!  Signing off, Mi Young.  Act three: Min Hyuk ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ One of the most beautiful cathedrals is supposed to be here in Cordoba, the La Mezquita, Islam's greatest architectural wonder outside of the Arab world. I think it's this way; I thought while walking across a old limestone bridge. The ancient city of Cordoba could only be accessed by foot, and no cars were allowed inside. The breathtaking infrastructure of the old buildings were enough to overwhelm me, dismissing any secondary thoughts. Immediately, I whipped out my professional camera to capture the unique limestone pillars of the city. It was absolutely stunning. As I began to venture into the Jewish quarters of Cordoba, I started to notice the gypsy women who were begging along the roadsides. Most of them were carrying babies, and muttering in Spanish. Feeling a wave of sympathy for their plight, I began to take out a few loose coins before bending down in front of a woman. With a small smile, I placed the coins in her small palm, before walking away. After taking a few steps, she called after me in a loud shout. "Would you like me to read your future?", she asked in an eager voice. I was about to refuse, when I suddenly remembered the circumstances that surrounded me. I could definitely use some direction, regardless of who it was from. It wouldn't hurt, right? I thought logically, before nodding in respons. She led me into a makeshift tent and guided me to a chair. The tent was dark, and lighted by a single candle standing in the middle of the table. Before I could back out, the lady beckoned for me to choose from the fan of tarot cards. After choosing two cards, she smiled at me reassuringly and read the first card. "This card represents a new discovery. Only, this discovery is something you don't desire. It brought you turmoil, and it says here that it's with regards to your family and a mistaken birth right", she said with a knowing expression. I gasped, shocked at her accuracy. I thought she was going to sprout some general optimistic predictions that could work for anyone. Smiling slyly, she picked up the next card, looking at it with a grin. "This card is a romance tarot. There will be a day when you meet a girl who will change everything. That will be the day where you would finally discover the purpose of your new birthright.", she said with a satisfied sigh. "I'm afraid I don't understand", I replied questioningly. The gypsy lady held the tarot card up before my eyes.  "When you finally meet her, you'll thank God for your newly discovered identity, because she'll become all that you need", she whispered in a soft and serious tone.  I exited the tent with a strange feeling, that was probably caused by the magic in the tarot cards. Rubbing my arms repeatedly, I tried to get rid of the goosebumps creeping up my skin. I didn't know if I even believed her, but then again, how did she know about my family? Pulling my cardigan tightly around my shoulders, I trudged on towards the cathedral. As I entered the gates of the cathedral, the majestic serenity of the courtyard greeted me. An awed smile plastered itself on my face as I aimed my camera at the bricks of the chapel building. It was indeed the most picturesque of the entire courtyard. There were benches strewn across the courtyard, and people were indulging in all kinds of activities. children were running around and families were having picnics. In the viewfinder of my camera, I noticed someone Sitting on the bench in front of the chapel, arms poised while sketching the cathedral tower across the courtyard. Pressing down on the shutter, I captured the view in a quick dismissive shot before turning my attention elsewhere. Act 4: Mi Young ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ It's a good thing I brought my canvases along with me. I feel so inclined to draw every architectural wonder I see. Spain is indeed a place b with artistic inspiration. I smiled happily to myself upon discovering a shaded bench under a tree. What made it perfect was the direct view I had of the cathedral tower of Cordoba. Cordoba was one of the places often featured on the postcards sent by aunt, and I was determined to personally visit the city. Breathing in the cool, fresh air, I felt extremely refreshed. Whipping out my sketchbook, I plugged in my earphones and picked up a pencil. Swift of all kinds flooded the paper with lines that mirrored the tower's structure. Tilting the pencil, I started to intently shade on the paper, capturing the light reflected off the cathedral by the subtle rays of the sun. Halfway through sketching, I looked up and noticed that the perfect view was blocked by a man who was crouching down, pointing a camera at the cathedral. Watching him carefully, I noticed his professional stance, and the satisfied smile that would creep up on his face whenever he reviewed the pictures he had taken. Smiling to myself in appreciation, I quickly continued sketching, filling the left bottom corner with his figure. With urgent movements, I shaded in his prominent features, his profile etched in a smile as he pointed a camera at the tower. When I was done, I looked up, eager to see if I had captured his smile accurately. To my disappointment, he had already disappeared. smiling wistfully, I shrugged and continued to fill in the structural textures of the beautiful cathedral. --------------------~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
