Past Chapter 09

Passerby

The Sunday morning didn’t really start like his expectation.

Rather than boasting on how he should catch up his way to the bakery and take the previously ordered bread his brother favored him to take, he silently places himself on the wooden chair and breathes the morning air calmly.

Kyuhyun watches as small pieces of rain drops falls with its watery traces on the living room’s window. He doesn’t tap his foot on the wooden floor like how people awaits the rain to stop so they could do their activity outside, nor tapped his slender fingers on the glassy table. His eyes fondly takes the view of the rain, enjoying at its small party at how the rain changes the air of his house.

“It’s raining outside.” His brother Ryeowook speaks behind, “I’ll go get them myself this afternoon.”

“You handled my guests yesterday. Now I’ll go take them. You’re not feeling well hyung.”

“You’ll get cold—"

“I’m fine with the rain. You don’t like rain hyung and…I think it’ll be raining all day.” Kyuhyun says as he walks to shoe corner and wears his brown leathered boots. He takes the average sized red umbrella in his hand and shortly bid his goodbyes before leaving the house.

Kyuhyun opened up the red umbrella and smiled once he stepped the wet ground. It feels good for him to finally make a contact with the wet ground. He didn’t bother to shrug as how refreshed it feels to walk under the rain. His legs constantly moving at the same time taking a slow pace for him to enjoy the cold breeze and the smell of wet soils.

The bakery where his brother usually bought the bread was located a little bit far away from his house just after a few blocks away, near the streets where small coffee and clothing shops are served to people publicly. Throughout walking he could only see less people walking with  umbrellas in their hands through their reflection from the wet ground.

Him volunteered or agreeing to do his brother’s favor despite this rainy day was not only because the older had given him a hand to serve his guests yesterday, more like his group mates from school. Not only that he could finish the work earlier, without the group work, his wallet wouldn’t have returned in his hands.

“Your wallet, you dropped them yesterday when I climbed behind you.”

“Oh…” Kyuhyun raised his eyebrows and take the wallet from Jessica’s hand. He immediately checks the inside of his wallet not for the money, but whether or not his mother’s picture was still there. When he found it, his lips formed into a smile. “Thanks.”

He was glad he could have the torn picture of his mother back.

It was because he is his only brother after all. He could’ve refused the offer as he felt like lazing around however he crave for some fresh air. Also, if his brother was not there, he didn’t know what else to do. He was nothing professional in preparing something to make the guests comfortable, while his brother always fond of having to serve the guest around. Perhaps his brother took best their mother’s genes.

While himself, he guessed he took his father’s genes, even though he knows he look like his mother lots.

One man that their mother confessed had passed away, which once exist in the crowds of the city that never got the chance to crossed path with him.

Kyuhyun stopped his legs from moving once he heard the bell from the bakery rings, signaling that people come and goes from the place. He closed his umbrella before going inside the warm and cozy place. From that he knows he doesn’t need to choose or take any kinds of bread from the prepared stacks on the corner of the wall and the middle of the shop. He felt like staying inside for a little while as he was always fond of the bakery’s aroma. Thankfully for him on the right side of it was a merged shop between café and the bakery.

Just after he take his order under his brother’s name from the counter, Kyuhyun join himself to the café and ordered a cup of warm coffee before choosing an empty seat on the left side of the clear window with the street view of people passing by.

“I think I may want to stay here for quite a while until the rain stops.” A girly voice speaks after Kyuhyun heard the café’s door closed. “Driver? No. No need to. That’ll be a burden. I can’t always rely on them oppa… I’ll take care of myself, I promise… Bye I’ll see you there later.” Kyuhyun give the girl in red sweater a look. When he noticed who she was and so the girl noticed who he was too, she beamed and approached Kyuhyun’s table.

“You are… Siwon oppa friend?” The girl who resembled Siwon whose name Kyuhyun remembered as Jiwon asked. “Kyuhyun oppa?”

“Jiwon!” Kyuhyun smiled then frown as he take a closer look at the girl. “What are you doing here? You’re soaked!”

“It’s fine, I played rain just a while ago on my way—uhm—” Jiwon giggled and take a seat oppositely from Kyuhyun. “Can I sit here? I think I’ll be here until the rain stops.”

“Uhm.. Sure..” Kyuhyun looked at the girl in concern. Half of her hair was soaked and so her red sweater. She might catch a cold later. She really reminded him of Siwon since they really looked alike. If his friend was soaked like that he would probably scold him for doing such a ridiculous thing. Kyuhyun then decided to go to the counter and ordered a warm chocolate for Siwon’s little sister. When he came back with the warm cup, Jiwon looked surprised at the sudden act of the boy she barely knows, yet only heard some things from her brother.

“Drink.” Kyuhyun cleared his throats. “You wouldn’t want your brother to know that you’re playing under the rain. I got these feelings he’s gonna be worried about you.”

“This is for me?!” Jiwon exclaimed, clasps her hands and rubs them to get heat. “I love hot chocolate!! Thank you so much!” Even when the girl smile, she still reminds him of Siwon. Suddenly he felt his heart skipped a beat. Again? Kyuhyun sighed and take a sip of the warm cup of coffee to distract and remind himself that he shouldn’t be thinking of him right now.

How could he when Siwon’s twin was in front of him?

“Ah—it’s hot.” Jiwon said as if she had burnt her tongue, then giggled. “And its cold again.”

“Careful there, don’t burn your tongue. ” Kyuhyun chuckled, “So Jiwon, what brings you here? You said you were on you way to…?”

“Actually…” Jiwon put down the cup on the table, hands fidgeting. “I was …on my way to the hospital.”

“Hospital?” Kyuhyun asked, concerns fill within him. Was someone ill? Was it Siwon? That couldn’t be. But it was possible. “Are you visiting someone?”

Jiwon nods slowly, smiling sadly to the older in front of her. “Yes. I’m on my way there visiting daddy. He’s currently been treated in the hospital after a severe…car accident.” The final sentence from Jiwon made his eyes widened, shocked at the truth. He could finally come to one conclusion. It was the car accident news that made Siwon to cry his heart out. The heartbreaking scene that he witnessed which made him to provide a shoulder to cry on for him.

“I’m—sorry.” Kyuhyun apologized. “I shouldn’t have—”

“It’s okay oppa. It’s the reality. We can’t really blame it on anyone or anything.” Jiwon still smiling sadly. “Dad’s condition had improved slowly but he’s still unconscious. I prayed everyday for a miracle. I’m sure he will wake up soon.” Kyuhyun felt like crying after remembering how break Siwon was. Why was he always this sensitive? He blinks to refrain tears from falling. Jiwon sobs, “I believe in daddy, because he’s one strong man.”

“He must’ve treasure and love you lots.”  Kyuhyun squeezed Jiwon’s hand to give her girl a small comfort. For once he felt like comforting his own little sister. “It’s going to be okay, as long as you believe in him.”

Jiwon nods, chuckled as she wiped her dry tears, “What? Am I getting another brother here? But I think Siwon and Heechul oppa wont mind me having you as another of my brother.”

“I guess so?” Kyuhyun smiled and ruffles her hair, glad that he could give Siwon’s small twin a little comfort.

The rain hasn’t slow down so they take their time talk a little bit longer and get to know each other. They surprisingly find similarities in them even though it was not that much. Both was glad they could finally talk as when the first time they met, they didn’t have time to converse much about things. Jiwon had decided to tell Kyuhyun things about Siwon. Kyuhyun listened to them tentatively and make sure to list them down on his mind.

“Whenever Siwon oppa was bored with the food cooked by our house’s chef, he would always be the one to cook for us.” Jiwon said, “He’s really good at cooking. I’m a girl and I have less knowledge about cooking so sometimes I tend to ask oppa to teach me.”

Kyuhyun was amazed. Couldn’t believe they were in the same shoes, having a sibling that can cook.

Jiwon nods, pouting. “He got that line from dad.”

The bell from the door rings which made everyone to stare at the door, including the two figures who were distracted by it. And there he was, the figure that Kyuhyun craved to see. He tries to convince himself that it was just his imagination. Siwon couldn’t be there at the same time when he wished to see him. Was he really missing his dear friend?

“Siwon oppa!” All that hard work of convincing himself vanished as he’s awaken by Jiwon calling her brother’s name. That’s when he’s emerged with the reality. Siwon was indeed there, hair half soaked.

“Jiwon! You were alone out here I was worried—” Siwon paused as his gaze meets Kyuhyun’s.

“Oh— Hi there Siwon…”Kyuhyun greets, a blush crept on his white cheeks and he looks down to avoid making Siwon see them. What is wrong with him? He tries to search up for a topic that could somehow melt the tension.  “Your sister was not alone. She was here with me the whole time.” He could see no more of the worried expression from Siwon, now plastered with a relief one.

Taking another chair, Siwon takes his seat between the two, the last empty side of the table, facing the window. Kyuhyun watches Siwon taking off his jacket above the white plain shirt and put it on Jiwon’s shoulder. Jiwon giggled at his brother’s gentleness, while Kyuhyun stare at him with full of admiration.

“You could get a cold. Look at you… I know you’re half dried now, based on that I could see that you were previously soaked…” Siwon starts the lecture. “You could’ve told me to fetch you..”

“Im sorry oppa.” Jiwon pouted, “But you know how much I love rain—”

“I know but at least…” Siwon sighed. “Umbrella.”

“Yes oppa. I will make sure next time I wont forget my umbrella.” Jiwon looked down but in another moment she grins, “Siwon oppa! Kyuhyun oppa has been very kind to me, he even gave me hot chocolate! My favorite from this café!”

Kyuhyun blinks, looking between the two and couldn’t help but to let out a shy smile. “We had fun here, right Jiwon?”

“Very much!” Jiwon said.

Siwon give Kyuhyun a look again and surprisingly he smiles warmly at him. Once again Kyuhyun’s heart jumped a rope.

“Thanks Kyuhyun… For giving my sister the small company.”

“It could be that Kyuhyun oppa was the one that Jessica unnie’s interested with.” Sooyoung gulped down a glass of water and poke Jessica’s cheek. Kyuhyun almost choked on his rice as he heard what Sooyoung just said. “That was why you approached him first? Right unnie?”

“Really Kyu?” Ryeowook asked in disbelieve.

“Impossible.” Jessica lets out a wholehearted laugh, “Something made me to just approached Kyuhyun and befriend him, besides, I’m seeing someone right now. Isn’t that right, Kyuhyunnie?”

Is that someone she was referring to was Siwon? Kyuhyun avoided  Jessica’s obvious gaze and proceed to continue eating. He doesn’t know what Jessica was doing, purposely mentioning that one obvious person which is Siwon nor he wants to know. He shouldn’t care if both person were really dating in the first place. He shouldn’t but how come he got this unlikable feeling in his chest?

“From now, anything for our little Jiwon.” Kyuhyun chuckled, avoiding Siwon’s warm gaze. “You have such a adorable sister Siwon.” To which he doesn’t get any reply from Siwon. By now the he’s aware that the rain had slower its pace. He should be back by now since his brother might be waiting for him at home. Kyuhyun stands and take his umbrella together with the bakery’s bag. “I have to go back, my brother’s waiting.”

“Kyuhyun oppa, can I have your house number?” Jiwon beamed and Kyuhyun asks her for a pen and paper with a gesture and write his house number on the small notepad. “Thank you!”

“You’ll be walking home?” Siwon ask as he stands. “Alone?”

“Yeah.” Kyuhyun simply said, mind still lingering on what he was thinking that Saturday.

“It’s still raining.” Siwon said.

“It’s not that hard.” Kyuhyun breathes out and pin points, “I have my umbrella.”

“Jiwon, we’re going. Other’s are waiting.” Siwon patted his sister on the shoulder. Kyuhyun was really touched at how Siwon really cared for his sister. He was about to leave the café when Siwon pulled him by the wrist in surprise and take him to the black car. “We’re taking you home.” Kyuhyun’s inner self was fighting whether or not he should refuse the offer. Kyuhyun was confused, just before he could make a word of it he’s already seated inside the car.

“Si—” Kyuhyun bit his lower lips as he felt the vehicle starts moving. If that’s how he felt because of that Saturday, was it a really great time to talk with Siwon? He should be just doing fine with him like how he used to comfortably talk all long with him during their bus drive. But at the moment like this, why can’t he? Was it because there are other people beside him and Siwon?

Jiwon’s presence and their driver doesn’t matter for him. Why was he acting like this? Kyuhyun look at Siwon’s figure that was seated beside their driver and when his eyes reaches the rear view mirror, he caught Siwon staring at him. Doesn’t clearly know why panic rushed through him, Kyuhyun gripped his red umbrella and throw his face away at the window full of droplets.

However few moments later Kyuhyun tried to steal a glance at Siwon when the latter was looking at the road ahead and waves of concerns hits him. If he hadn’t met Jiwon today, he wouldn’t have known about what was behind Siwon’s breakdown on his shoulder.

It made Kyuhyun to have the urge to comfort him again.

The short drive went pretty smoothly yet no words were exchanged between the two males, except Jiwon and Kyuhyun who exchanged small talks until they finally reach Kyuhyun’s house.

“Here we are.” Kyuhyun said, Siwon must’ve told the driver where his house is. Otherwise the driver wouldn’t have known.

“Kyuhyun oppa, we’ll see each other again, right?” Jiwon asks and Kyuhyun nods.

“We will.” Kyuhyun smiled and give Siwon another look. “Siwon…I...Thanks for the ride.”

“I wouldn’t want to let a friend catch a cold.” Siwon said and Kyuhyun smiled. He knows what that means and decide to keep it to himself. He bid his goodbyes to the three figure and left the black vehicle. He takes out the house key from his pocket and unlock the door. Going inside he straightly went over to the sofa and slumps himself on it with a deep sigh. Not long after resting himself on the soft fabric, a knock came from a the living room’s door.

With a tired sigh Kyuhyun approached the door and opened it, eyes widened in surprise as he’s greeted once again by Siwon, this time holding a red umbrella and a white familiar bakery bag. Kyuhyun looked back inside the house to find no sight of his red umbrella and the bread his brother ordered him to take. He sighs and look down, embarrassed at another of his own clumsy act.

How could he? At times like this?

“Here.” Siwon starts, “You left them.”

“Sorry—I—Must’ve left them behind.” Kyuhyun lets out a nervous laugh as he takes the items from Siwon. Last time was the bag, now its happening again.

“You did. Are you always like this?” Siwon released a heart warming chuckle and give Kyuhyun a messy ruffle on the hair which unexpectedly gives a warm feeling to his chest. “Leaving in hurry like that, it wasn’t like we were planning to kidnap you.”

“Now you’re trying to be funny at times like this?” Kyuhyun said casually hitting Siwon’s chest, smiling as the tension he felt between them fading away. They both laughed and seeing his dear friend laughed like that after what he’s been through made him relieved, though he could still see the sadness in Siwon’s eyes. Kyuhyun smiled sadly, noticing some small droplets sticking to Siwon’s hair. “You didn’t use my umbrella on your way to my front door?”

“It’s only for a while.” Siwon replied. “Don’t worry—"

“No.” Kyuhyun knows he shouldn’t be doing these. But he knows Siwon might need them. He dropped the items down to the floor and wrapped his arms around Siwon’s back, head resting on his shoulder, finally giving him a reassuring embrace.

“I’m worried.” Kyuhyun said calmly, right hand started to pat the latter’s back slowly. “Still worried…”

“Lend me your two minutes.”

“Jiwon…was it?” Kyuhyun heard Siwon said as he could feel a tug on his wrist. “How much did she tell you?”

“Not much.” Kyuhyun said, feeling the tug on his sleeve getting tighter, “But enough for me to know what has been on your mind.”

Staying in their own world once again, both stayed still until the rain sound seems inaudible to their ears.
