Chapter 32
Love Matters. It had been an extremely long day for Yuri, especially when he found out about his wife wanting to divorce him behind his back. They had started off the day early in the morning but his mood had turned foul even before lunch time, and throughout dinner as well. Jessica wanted to know why Yuri was behaving so oddly but she wasn't going to force him at dinner. Hence, the strong tension in their bedroom right now.
“Seobang, what’s wrong?”
Yuri shut his eyes and rested both his palms on the bed, his back hunched in a picking-up-position. He didn’t want to hear any nickname or endearing pet-name Jessica called him, because it would only weaken his resolve to figure out everything. Jessica always had a way to calm him down no matter what the issue was but he could only pray it wasn’t going to work this time – a divorce she wanted, a divorce she shall get.
“You tell me what’s wrong.”
Jessica furrowed her eyebrows in confusion; she didn’t have the slightest clue what Yuri was going on about. She tried to force herself to remember what the conflict could be about but there was nothing – nothing could be serious enough for Yuri to flare up. She was so deep in thought that Yuri only caught her attention when he shoved a few pieces of clothes into his bag, zipping it shut before heading for the door.
“KWON YURI!”
The tanned guy stopped dead in his tracks, his hand resting against the door knob - he couldn't understand how his wife still had that effect on him despite his knowledge of her actions. He didn't want to leave Jessica or his children but he couldn't face the woman as long as his mind was still focused on the divorce papers back home. He felt a hand slide into his and he turned around.
Jessica knew it; Yuri was hiding something from her and she was going to push it out of him tonight. “What is it, Yuri? Let’s talk about it, hm?” She cupped his face, almost falling backwards when she saw how wet and red Yuri's eyes were when he looked at her.
Before Yuri could shout at Jessica, his tears started to roll down his cheeks uncontrollably - how could he bear any life without Jessica when they've spent years exploring each other? Jessica felt her own tears gather in her eyes at the sight of her crumbling husband; nothing or no one other than her could make him cry like this and it scared her - because she didn't know what was happening.
“Oh my God, baby…” Jessica whispered, wrapping an arm around Yuri’s neck as the other pulled him closer. She pressed multiple kisses on his temple, “what’s wrong?”
Yuri was clinging to her.
Yuri was clinging to her as if his life depended on it - he was trembling so much. She couldn't remember the last time she held him in her arms like this, other than when she had been kidnapped by Victoria. Yuri was heartbroken by something, but he wasn't opening his mouth. Jessica wanted to make him say it but she didn't know how - Yuri could be the tightest nut to crack.
“Come here.”
Yuri willingly let himself be pulled towards the bed, sitting down with his back against the headboard. He looked down and felt Jessica place herself on his legs, her hands resting on his shoulders. “Yuri…” Jessica cupped Yuri’s cheeks once more, raising his face, “please, tell me what’s wrong…” She leaned forward and gently took his lips into hers, resting her forehead against his.
“Y-You…”
For goodness’ sakes, he couldn’t even finish two words without stuttering and fumbling over his words.
“Slow down, Yul. I’m right here, don’t rush…”
Jessica cuddled Yuri’s head to her chest, running her fingers through his soft brown locks. She knew her husband needed as much comfort as possible before he opened up – Yuri was a fragile person, and Jessica adored him for it. She loved a man who could show his weakness in front of her and know when to admit that he needed her; Yuri did that all the time without fail.
“Hush, Yul…” Jessica gently placed her lips on Yuri’s forehead, letting her lips linger for a little while, “I promise I won’t ever leave you. I’m yours and I swore I would always be.”
Those words calmed Yuri’s racing heart a lot more than he expected it to; it was successfully wiping off the thought of Jessica signing the divorce papers unexpectedly. Initially, they had put it in the drawer in the study room to scare themselves; when they argued, one could simply whip it out and try to sort things out between them – it always worked exceptionally well even when there were no official signatures on the papers.
“Then can you explain to me why the papers have your signature on them?”
For a moment there, Yuri thought Jessica was stunned because she didn’t expect him to know but she was only surprised due to the fact that he was only asking her about it now. She couldn’t even remember the last time she had stepped into the study room alone; before this holiday, she went in mostly to help her children get their art supplies or whichever old books were kept there.
“Sooyeon?”
Jessica flinched when she heard her Korean name leave Yuri’s lips; he never called her by that unless things were serious or when he wanted to stop playing around for once. She didn't like the pained look in her husband's chocolate orbs which normally held nothing but adoration for her - it was nowhere close to being visible though. Yuri squeezed his eyes shut, not knowing that she was merely surveying his face and not staring at him with guilt.
“You casually assumed that I wanted to divorce you when you saw the signature?” Jessica whispered, her mind starting to run a little wild when she realised how little trust he had in her, “the papers were there to scare the both of us, and I would know better if I wanted to divorce you. Yes, my signature is there but did you ever stop to think that it might have been ages ago? When we didn’t know how to treasure each other enough? Or when I didn’t feel good enough for you?”
Yuri felt his eyes burn at the Jessica’s last question; it had been soft but his sharp hearing managed to hear it all. He hated to think that there was a time Jessica thought of herself as inferior; how could she when she made him happy and feel loved all the time? In fact, the one and only time she thought of that was when she had suffered a miscarriage and ended up in coma after the kidnapping; Yuri could remember her weeping in bed and begging for his forgiveness.
Jessica begged for him to forgive her… because she lost the baby.
And if that was the reason why her sig
