Best Served Hot: Prologue
Files of The Dead“Too cold, too cold… Damn.”
Amber’s teeth chattered nearly uncontrollably as she walked briskly across the street, a shiver running throughout her entire frame despite the fact that she was adequately dressed for the weather. It shouldn’t surprise her that she was very close to freezing her off whenever she was outdoors with Christmas just a couple of days away but… seriously. It seemed like the winters got colder and colder each and every year. All she wanted to do now was to be indoors, preferably in front of the fireplace, with coffee, hot chocolate, or tea in hand.
She’d nearly made a run for it when the building that housed the Psychic Research and Investigation Center entered her line of sight.
She was running late, too, but knowing Changmin and Kyuhyun, they’d excuse her tardiness. After all, the weather was being horrible and the client they were all going to meet called in pretty much out of the blue, it seemed. They hadn’t a client call scheduled for the day and so the twins decided to be merciful and allow their employees to come to work later. Good thing she’d been awake when Kris called to tell her that things changed and they needed to be in the Center pronto.
“Almost there, almost there.”
She’d managed not to yelp in triumph the moment she walked through the door of the building seconds later, the blonde woman shaking the snow off her clothes and the beanie she wore atop her head. She knew she was messing up the building lobby and soaking the floor with snow. She’d take care of that later.
She took the stairs that led to the office two steps at a time, reaching the second floor landing quickly. She could hear the soft conversation inside and knew that the client was probably already inside, judging by Yoona’s ‘May I get you anything to drink?’ She knew for a fact though that the official meeting hadn’t started. Kyuhyun and Changmin always made it a point not to start unless everyone is present… or unless the client is in a rush, is an impatient bastard or , or all of the above.
“I’m sorry I’m–” Amber had swung the door open, ready to apologize for her tardiness, when she cut herself off mid-sentence when she saw one of the two people seated across Changmin and Kyuhyun. “Henry?”
The man in question smiled brightly. “Hey, Jo.”
“How many times have I told you not to call me that?!” She scowled despite her surprise.
From his solo couch, Kris looked up from his laptop with his eyebrows raised. “You two know each other?”
“Well, yeah.” Amber gestured to the tea pot Yoona was holding as the latter emerged from the kitchen. “I get our tea from him.”
“What a coincidence.” He grinned. “I get the herbs I use for healing from him.”
“It’s a small world, after all.” A questioning look was soon sent to Henry. “Are you our client?”
Henry shook his head. “No, but I was the one who referred my friend to this place so I thought it’d be best if I came along too.”
“Amber, if you can find a seat so we can start.” Changmin cut in before anyone else could really say anything, the blonde woman nodded before hastily seating herself on the chair beside Kris. As soon as she had done that, Changmin had turned back to their client with a polite smile. “I’m Shim Changmin, co-head of the Psychic Research and Information Center.” He gestured to his twin. “This is my brother and co-head, Cho Kyuhyun. What can the team do for you?”
“I’m Kim Ryeowook.” Their client managed a rather cheerful smile despite the obvious distress on his face. “I’m a friend of Henry’s and he’s the one who told me about your team and… I’ve recently been passed the reins to our family b
