It had started out as a strategy to groom future generations into exemplary civil servants and military officers in an era of constant fighting and war. However, as it was successful-too successful perhaps, the popular policy stuck on through the ages and accommodated to the ever-changing times, in light of continuous technological advancements.

Living in a society with people of high intelligence and physical abilities sometimes unfathomable to your average human, Senga Kento was just an average chip technician, basically a nobody. When he was eighteen, he had been streamed, along with the rest of his cohort and ended up being in the “commoner” group, those tasked to just lead ordinary lives and make sure that the human population does not dwindle out. The other group was those who were to work under the government and military as civil servants and officers. They were the ones who get to keep their superhuman capabilities while the unfortunate people, like himself, had to have theirs deactivated as part of integration to normalcy. And in a society like this, unspoken elitism hung; it was a common belief that people like him were just not meant for greatness as their abilities were not on par with their high-ranked peers.

In the first few months of his new life, Senga definitely noticed the differences. For example, it took him longer to learn new things and he started having different reactions to different things, unlike in the past where everything was absorbed quickly and obediently. He was assigned to the chip technician sector shortly after. Perhaps, he should consider himself lucky since his job would be to assist in ensuring that the government workers’ chips were in proper working condition- it was the closest a commoner could ever get to the civil service. Perhaps, this was all he was destined to be, he thought somewhat bitterly.

After a year or so, Senga was promoted from his initial level of an assistant and that was around the time when he met her. His chief had assigned to only one person since he was just promoted.

“A newbie, huh?” he muttured to himself as he flipped through the data he was given. He then decided to head down to her quarters just to get introductions over and done with. Honestly, he was glad that all civil servants were kept in the same huge government building since it made his job easier and hassle-free.

Entering her room, he greeted her and introduced himself. Personally, he thought that calling the place someone’s quarters was kind of an overstatement, especially since one would imagine it to be some sort of cozy place to relax in.
