Lost in Your Labyrinth Chapter 1 - Haunted
A Thousand Tales - A Collection of One Shots and Short Stories
Kris woke up, his dream still vividly sketched in his mind. This was the second time he’s dreamed of something like this. Each time, the girl was there, haunting him. He wanted to get a good glimpse of her face but she was always ducking. He could tell that maybe they were in a maze but the setting always switched.
He wanted to draw it out. He wanted to be able to remember and to recall every single detail. There was something about the girl that intrigued him. She was beautiful. That much he could tell. But who she was, was she even someone he knew, was a mystery. He sat up in the bed and kicked off his covers. He searched for a sketchpad and began drawing furiously. But her face deluded him.
He closed his eyes and tried to remember. He could recall her black dress, the dark waves of her hair. He knew that she was watching him. The only thing Kris could recall now was a tilt of her head and the mysterious dark eyes that captivated him.
He could feel the stone wall beneath his fingertips. Where were they and why was she haunting his dreams? He groaned. Maybe he should lay off the sleeping pills. Maybe they were causing strange, beautiful women to visit him in his sleep.
It was difficult to put the images behind him. Every night, before he fell asleep, he was determined to dream about her, and this time, remember. But she never showed. Weeks passed and Kris decided that maybe those were just coincidences. He dropped the sleeping pills and focused on yoga meditation.
This time, the dream was even more vivid. This time, he knew she was there. Like before, he could barely make out how she looked like. But this time, he could memorize her clothes. He saw the short black dress and the long train. He drank in the flower in her hair.
“Turn around, please,” he begged.
Suddenly, she was gone. And in front of him, was a large stone wall. The sun was still shining so this must be an outside labyrinth. The wall. How had she gotten past it? Kris tried to look for another entrance when suddenly words began appearing on the stone.
Catch Me In My Labyrinth
He read it and smirked. Challenge accepted. He took a step back and tried to memorize his surroundings. Somewhere within he could hear the clicking of her heels and knew that she must be watching him. Kris saluted her and he heard a giggle.
When he looked around again, he saw that the maze was now reflective glass and everywhere, he could see himself. He saw shadows moving behind him and turned, only to see, this time, another girl in another dress. She winked at him and melted into the glass.
Kris sighed. How many girls were there? He could remember another one, in the forest from his first dream. The glass began to move and he realized, he must have asked his question out loud.
Just Find Me In Here
He decided to ask another question. “Is this a game?” But this time, there was no answer. “Why am I even here?” Again, there was silence and suddenly, almost with a force that was out of this world, he was wrenched back to life.
He woke up, sputtering, feeling as if someone had doused cold water on his face. He looked around. Nothing. No trace of anyone except himself. He sighed in frustration. At least now he knew this was not just a figment of his imagination.
There was a scratching noise and he saw words appear on his sketchbook.
