Chapter 19

“Wounds which don't affect veins or arteries shouldn't bleed longer than 7 minutes.” my mum said worried. My wound bled for half an hour already and didn't show any signs of stopping. “That's it. I am going to take you to the hospital. Get a jacket from your room.” I didn't dare to go against her because she seemed so determined. I came across a mirror and looked at my reflection and now I know why my mum screamed. I looked horrible. I was pale and my lips were blue. After we got ready my mum drove me to the hospital as fast as possible. Whenever she could she would accelerate even more. By the time we arrive my wound was still bleeding and additionally I felt as if I were going to throw up thanks to my mum's driving. We sat down in the waiting area and after one hour of waiting my wound stopped bleeding, after another hour a certain Dr. Seo was ready to make a check-up with me. I went into the room and was greeted by a strict looking woman in her late 40s. At least that was my guesstimate. She shook my hands and looked down on the folder again. “So why did you come here today?”she asked. What a lovely greeting. I felt blood running down my arm and instantly knew my wound opened again. I was physically reacting to that (horrid) woman. “I cut me today and my wounds bleed for over 90 minutes and I have got bruises all over me body.” I told her. She didn't even look up from the paper sheet in front of her. “What colour are those bruises and when did you notice them?” I tried to keep calm but I couldn't help but think that she didn't believe me. “Blue and I noticed them this morning.” I said in an overly-kind voice. Finally she looked at me and all I could see were doubting eyes. “May I see this bruises?” She asked. I lifted my Shirt a little. She looked stunned. I couldn't help but smirk. Serves you right. “It looks like there is something wrong with your blood. I have to run a few test before I can tell what is wrong with your blood. I suggest I take a blood sample and afterwards you go home and tomorrow around noon you come back and we talk about the results.” she said, this time she sounded as if she pitied me. I nodded and she took a blood sample. We bid her goodbye and left. My nerves were wrecked and all I wanted to do was to shower to get rid of this feeling of hospital and. Sleep and that's exactly what I did after we arrived at home. The way back was way better because mum wasn't driving as if she was out of her right mind. Thinking about it we are lucky that no police came across us. After showering I put on my PJs and realized my whole leg turned blue. I was desperate and totally done with the world. I started crying. Tears kept flowing. When I went to my room I was still crying. In a long time I cried myself to sleep again.

I missed school the next day again. I didn't wake up till 10 a.m. The first thing I noticed was that I ahd to throw up. I rushed into the bathroom and puked. Blood.

I grew scared. It didn't stop. All I could do was sleeping and coughing up blood. I got ready for the appointment with Dr. Seo but it took all my strength to do so. I was sleeping again in the car. When we arrived we went straight to Dr. Seo's office and she greeted us and told us to sit down. “We have to run a few more tests because the blood shows that there is something terribly wrong but we can't figure out what it is.” I nodded as a sign of understanding. She asked my mum if that was okay with her and the moment she nodded a nurse walked in and told me to follow her out. I felt like a rat in an experiment. I was pushed from room to room and went through multiple tests.

On top of that I was told that I had to stay in the hospital. I slept at 6 p.m. Because I was so exhausted from all the tests. The next morning I woke up and my whole family was in my hospital room. It took me one look to tell they cried. All of them. They avoided my questions and tried to divert my thoughts to different things.

When I was asked if I wanted to eat breakfast I said no. I didn't feel hungry at all. The moment a doctor entered I could feel my family tensing up. “Hello Hwa-Young. I hope you are feeling alright. I am Dr. Lee and I would like to talk with you about the test results.” His voice was close to breaking and I immediately knew it was bad. No, worse. It was terrible and I was terrified. I let out a shaky breath and prepared myself for the worst. “You have leukaemia.”
