Ravenclaw no more

Jennie isn’t the resident nerd anymore

Jennie groaned just thinking about the chances she has with _____. No matter how many computations she does the chances always ends up with 0%. The statistics lessons she took up hadn’t been of great help. She eventually decided that she would just let time solve it for her.

“Why don’t you just talk to her?” Lisa, a great friend of her, tried to convince Jennie. She had been trying to help the other girl but to no avail, Jennie couldn’t muster up the courage to do so. Lisa felt more frustrated than her friend.

“I already did!” Jennie said defensively, which caused Lisa’s eyes to shot up, not believing that Jennie had made some progress. “What did you say?”

Jennie looked elsewhere before answering, biting her lip as she does. “I asked her… if I could borrow a pen.” She answered, her voice shrinking.

Lisa’s palm landed on her forehead as she couldn’t help but feel hopeless for her friend. “Oh my goodness! How do you even —— this won’t work. Just go to her, talk to her about something that you think she might like.”

“Would talking to her make her like me though? If yes, then I’d go talk to her now.” Asking _____ for a pen is more nerve wracking for Jennie, than answering a 200 items mathematics test in 1 hour.

“Yes, it might. You don’t even know her type,” Lisa countered. As much as she wants to understand that her friend is a coward and has a low self esteem, Lisa was the one who feels tired looking at how her friend is acting. It had been almost a year now, and Jennie is no where near the finish line.

Jennie looked ahead, seeing a couple at the school’s playground, holding hands and talking to each other sweetly. It made her sigh, thinking there’s no way _____ and her will be like that. “I don’t, but I’m sure she wouldn’t have a nerd as an ideal type, nobody does.”

Due to her love and good performance in her academic subjects, she was labeled as a nerd. Her perfectly round glasses didn’t even help, it made her look like how people stereotype nerds— always has books in hand, round eyeglasses, only have one friend, except she doesn’t have any braces on.

“Just go will you?” Lisa pushed Jennie lightly, just in time for _____ to pass by in front of them.

“_____!” Lisa called, gaining the girl’s attention. She was alone, which is quite unexpected since she’s always with her group of friends.

____ stopped her tracks and turned to face Lisa, with Jennie by her side standing stiffly as ever. “Oh! Hey Lis.”

“Where are you heading to?” Lisa was quite close with _____, causing Jennie to be triggered by the fact that her best friend is friends with her ‘crush’.

“Nowhere, really. My friends are busy with individual things, so I’m left alone.” _____ laughed. Her eyes spotted the girl behind Lisa, and saw that Jennie was looking at her. “Hi Jennie.” _____ smiled, waving her hand. _____ isn’t really one to start up conversation or greet someone first but she suddenly had the urge to say hi.

Jennie was taken aback by the action. She waved back, although it was quite late.

“Then sit with us.” Lisa pulled _____ down to the bench, letting her sit at the middle of her and Jennie. She thought that it’ll be a great opportunity for Jennie to talk to her happy crush.

Lisa looked at her wrist watch and turned to _____, smiling apologetically. “I forgot that I needed to meet with my club members. I gotta go, I’m already late.” She stood up, not waiting for a response from either of the two. Thank me later Jennie.

Being awkward in nature, the two didn’t know what to do. Jennie and _____ sat beside each other, looking at everything around them, as if the surrounding is alien to them.

The heavy atmosphere vanished, once Jennie spoke. “Hi.” She had been thinking deeply on what she’ll say since Lisa left them, but unfortunately, ‘hi’ was the only word that came out of .

_____ faced her, smiling widely. “Hi.”

“So umm…” Jennie cleared . “How was the test? It isn’t as hard as the last one, right?” She cursed herself for not being able to come up with an interesting topic to talk about, she just had to talk about the test. Jennie just wished that she wasn’t boring out the other girl. It’s the last thing she’ll wish for.

“Yeah, I guess. Although it’s still hard. For me at least.” The uncomfortable and awkward silence that followed suffocated _____. She could’ve stood up and find an excuse to leave, but somehow, she finds herself glued to the bench.

Thousands of things came on Jennie’s mind as she think of a way or something to say to ease the atmosphere. “Your favourite color is black?” She asked, although she already knew _____’s favourite color long before, which is the reason why Jennie would always have something black on her. She even changed her bag to a black one.

“Is it that obvious?” _____ scratched her nape. She doesn’t know why she’s embarrassed, but she just is.

“Quite.” Her shoe became the focus of her attention, not liking how her mind goes blank every time her eyes connects with _____’s.

A light tap on her shoulder made her look beside her, quickly regretting it as she felt her heart beat crazy.

“It’s already time. Our next teacher is Ms. Kwon, we wouldn’t want to be late, would we? You know she’s quite the hot tempered one.” _____ giggled, amused at Jennie’s reaction.

“Oh my god! We can’t be late!” She stood up abruptly, causing _____’s eyes to form a crescent and a huge smile spread across her face. “Yeah, we can’t”

The heaven sided them, for when they entered, the teacher wasn’t there yet. Apparently, she had an urgent meeting and only left an activity for the class to do.

Half way through the class, Lisa felt bored answering the activity, so she turned around from her seat to face _____.

“You’re done?!” Seeing _____’s science book closed, Lisa wondered how she was able to finish it so fast. It’s either she guessed all of it or she didn’t answer at all, Lisa was sure it was just either of the two.

“I’m just taking a break from answering. My brain told me that she couldn’t take it anymore.” _____ casually said, spinning her pen on her right hand. “You?”

“Same as you. By the way, tell me about your ideal type.” Lisa’s words caught Jennie’s attention, who was so immersed on answering the activity. She finds herself having a hard time waiting for _____’s answer.

“Why? You like me? Sorry, but you’re not my ideal type.” _____ jokingly said, earning a roll of eyes from Lisa.

“Dream on, I’m too good for you. No, but seriously. What’s your idea type?”

_____ didn’t see the point of the conversation, but she figured that talking about ideal types is better than answering the given activity. “Umm… I like someone who looks strong and charismatic on the outside. Someone who looks badass.” She smiled at the image that popped in her head. She merely thought that having a badass boyfriend or maybe girlfriend is cool, just like how they are portrayed in Korean dramas.

“Ohhh… So you like those kind of guys. I see…” Lisa side-eyed her friend, who was sitting at her left. She noticed that the latter had stopped writing. It made her feel bad that Jennie had to hear that she was far from ____’s ideal type.

Minutes later, _____ went out of the classroom to head to the comfort room. She had drank too much water causing her to have the need to go.

“See! I told you I don’t stand any chance,” Jennie whispered harshly, once she was sure that _____ was out.

“Then make her change her ideal type.” A shrug came from Lisa. She honestly couldn’t think of anything else.

Jennie had crossed her arms. Although she had keep on telling herself that she already accepted the fact that she didn’t have any chance at all, she couldn’t help but feel hurt now that she heard _____’s ideal type, which is obviously not her. “And how are you plann—-“

“Or!” Lisa cut her off. A bulb lighting up above her head. “YOU be the ideal one she’s looking for.” She finished off with a smirk, feeling triumphant over the brilliant idea she came up with.

“What do you mean?” The puzzled look on Jennie’s face was enough for Lisa to stop beating around the bush.

“Let’s get rid of your nerd image.” Was the last thing Lisa said, before their next subject teacher came in, halting their discussion. Jennie was left wondering the whole time, about what Lisa said. She couldn’t say something to the other girl since the whole class was silent and any word spoken, even if it was a whisper, can be heard.

After the classes ended, Jennie was dragged by no other than her best friend, out to the salon. Lisa had instructed the hairdresser on what to do, asking her to dye Jennie’s hair into brown. It took a lot of convincing for Jennie to sit at the chair without attempting to escape, but nonetheless, she complied. And now, they were at Jennie’s house, sorting out the owner’s clothes.

“What?! NO!” Lisa had thrown all the ‘unnecessary’ clothing pieces that are in her friend’s closet, which was more than half of the closet.

“A little change in style won’t hurt.”

“You call this little?! You practically changed my wardrobe to funeral clothes!” Her closet was now void of colors. She had a lot of pink and purple clothes, but they’re all in the trash bin now and she’ll probably never get to see them again.

Hands on her hips, Lisa gave Jennie a look. “Black, grey, and white are the colors of clothing you’ll mostly need. I thought you said you wanted _____ to like you?”

“Yes but——“

“Then stop complaining.”

Jennie looked at herself on the mirror. She still look the same, although her features are more apparent. “Do I look ok?” Jennie was still unsure of everything, she doesn’t know whether changing herself is right.

“You look great! _____ will definitely fall for you. If she doesn’t, then I’d kill myself already.” Lisa swore, a hundred percent sure of it. She hadn’t been as confident as she is right now, and she’s so proud of what she had done.

“Really?”

Lisa nodded, before adding, “All you need now is confidence. That’s the key. Be confident, don’t be shy and there’ll be no problem.”

“But… I don’t think I can do that part…”

“Just act like how tho
