“You’re what?!”

Jackson shushes you with his finger. “Shh. I haven’t told the others yet...”

You look at him in disbelief. “You’re seriously resigning from your job?”

“Yep,” he answers without a beat. You can’t help but feel sad about his revelation. And the way he answered. It’s like it doesn’t bother him that he’s leaving his “best friend” – as he fondly calls you – behind.

Noticing how you’re trying to keep your sadness from showing, Jackson circles an arm around your shoulders, “Heyyyy, don’t be sad. Don’t miss me. We can still see each other. We can still meet up!”

You break away from him and jokingly tell him, “Pssh. You’d be busy with your new girls at your new job. You’d definitely forget about me.” Of course, you really meant what you just said. Lately, you’ve been telling him how you really feel by pretending to joke around. This way, I can speak my mind without being awkward.

“Aww, are you jealous~~?”

“Of course not!” You walked back to your cubicle but he follows you.

“Hey, let’s eat dinner, my treat!”

Hearing Jackson’s rather loud invitation, your co-workers started making fun of you yet again.

“Oh~ Seems like this couple is going strong!” Leo teases.

Ken joins in, “So it’s true! Jackson does like you!”

Jackson is quick to defend himself, “Ya! When did I say that?” He punches Ken’s arm, making the others laugh.

“I think I’ve seen this kind of behavior before...” Luna laughs as she stares at you.

“W-when did I...?”

“All the time.” Hara answers.

The whole room erupts in laughter seeing you and Jackson suddenly acting all shy and awkward. I must be blushing real hard right now... Gaaahhh...

You pretended to work but at the corner of your eye, you tried to see how Jackson’s reacting. Is he...? Nah.

Later in the evening...

You pretended to work overtime as you wait for Jackson to bring up the dinner date again. However, you overheard his conversation with Youngji, who sits a few cubicles to your right.

“Hey... Uhh... Are you free tonight?” Jackson asks.

“Yes. Why?”

“I... I’d like to invite you, well, for dinner.”

“Oh. Just the two of us?”

“Y-yeah...”

You turn around to see Jackson looking shy and nervous. Does he like Youngji?

You’re half happy for your friend but you can’t help but envy Youngji as well. Though you used to ship them together – back when you didn’t like Jackson yet – you’re still hurt that instead of you, someone else is getting invited for dinner by the man you like.

Youngji catches you looking at them and she looks at you as if she’s asking for your permission. You nod and smile as you mouthed, “Go.”

The moment you heard Youngji accept Jackson’s invitation, your hopes of ever making Jackson like you as more than a friend vanished.

“Hey, are you going out with Jackson tonight or...?” Leo suddenly sits beside you, blocking your view of the two.

“W-what?”

“Didn’t he invite you for dinner this morning?”

You force a laugh, “It was a joke, silly!” You say as you lightly punch his arm.

“Then... You’re going with me tonight!” He beams.

“W-WHAT?”

“Just go and prepare. I’ll wait for you at the lobby. Okay~?”

Before you could say any more, Leo already left. What the hell is going on?

“Where are we going?” You asked your co-worker whose eyes are glued at the road. “Why did I even go with you...”

“I want to take you out for dinner. Is there anything wrong with that? Can’t we go on dates?” Leo finally turns to you when he stops at a red light.

You blushed hearing what he just said. “D-date?”

“What, you’re single; I’m single. We can do this right? Or has Jackson made a move already?”

Hearing his name, you immediately tense up and become irritated. “What’s he got to do with this?”

“Do you like him?”

You stared at Leo, shocked at his question. He, too, is staring at you, waiting for your answer.

*BEEEEEP!!!!*

The sudden sound of the car horn made you jump. You were too focused on your conversation that you hardly noticed that it’s a green light already.

“Stop asking nonsense and just drive carefully!” You snap at him, hoping he’d finally shut up. You turn to your side of the window and looked outside as your mind wandered off. I don’t like him... I love him...

Though you were annoyed with Leo poking his nose into other people’s business, you still went on with your little ‘date’. You thought that by doing so, you’d forget about Jackson and his date with Youngji.

While Leo appeared to be very quiet at work, you found him to be quite fun to be with and you actually had interesting conversations with him. You even thought that he isn’t so bad and you might actually end up liking him. Then again, you’ve liked Jackson for a few years now and you know it won’t be that easy to get over him.

“Thanks for tonight...” You tell Leo as he walked you to your apartment door.

“For the record, I actually like you... But I know you do like Jackson so... I’m just going to hang around and... be a good friend to you.”

“Leo, I...”

“Shh... I’m okay... I’ve always known.”

You bowed your head in embarrassment. “Was I too obvious?”

“I guess...”

“Then why hasn’t he noticed?”

“Mmm...”

“Why?” You raised your head and Leo sees that you’re tearing up.

He panics as he looked for his handkerchief in his pockets. He offers it to you. “Here... Please stop crying...”

You wanted to but your tears just kept on pouring out. Leo takes you into his arms, careful not to make you feel awkward and make it seem like he’s taking advantage of the situation.

“Don’t lose hope,” he tells you.

But I have. Already.

Valentines’ Day

It’s already been two months since Jackson left your company. It’s quieter now so you can’t help but miss him. Though things became awkward before he left, he patched things up with you and promised that you will always be his bestfriend.

~Bzzt bzzt…~

Your phone vibrates on your desk. You stop to check it and you find a message from him: “What time are you eating lunch?”

Oh… Is he going to ask me to eat lunch with him?

You type in a reply, telling him the time then went on to say that you don’t know yet what and where you will eat.

You excitedly open his response thinking that he’d really ask you out.
