With the yuletide season fast approaching, you’re starting to feel lazy about going to school. You just want to fly home and see your family, friends and most of all, your boyfriend. You last saw Jackson in flesh on his birthday while the succeeding occasions that you celebrated together were done online.

You feel sorry that you live far from Jackson but it can’t be helped. You’ve always dreamed of studying abroad so you grabbed the first chance you got. Your boyfriend was fine with your decision at first, too. Neither of you saw this coming. No one thought it would be such a torture to not be with the one you love for a long time.

To encourage yourselves, you always remind each other that you’re now only a little less than two years away from graduation.

Every time you lose the drive to study, you cheer yourself up. You didn’t have Jackson by your side and all your roommates are weird so you didn’t have anyone to rely on but yourself. Things were easier back home when you had everyone by your side; but then again, this is what you wanted.

It’s okay... Christmas is just around the corner. I’ll see him soon...

However, a month before Christmas, school works started pouring. Your heartless professors are giving you a lot of paperworks to finish, projects to accomplish. You’re in danger of not being able to come home on Christmas.

But I promised him I’ll come home this time.... No...

Two weeks before Christmas…

“Can you please come home this Christmas? Please, please, please???”

Hearing Jackson beg breaks your heart. Though he’s trying to be cute while pleading, you know deep inside that he’s devastated. He’s probably thinking, ‘why the hell can’t my girlfriend come home on such an important occasion?’

“I’m really sorry, babe… I’m really busy with my studies. I have to finish a project that’s due for submission when classes resume after the holidays…”

Jackson lets out a sigh and bows his head in disappointment. “Okay…”

“I’m really sorry…” If only you could just shove your body at your laptop screen and miraculously appear next to him...

You want to give Jackson a big hug and make him happy but with you studying abroad, you and Jackson just settle with video chatting via Skype every night.

“Then I’ll just go to sleep. You should rest, too… You have a lot to do…”

Before you could even protest and ask him to stay and chat for a while, he ends the call. You try to call him again but he’s already gone offline. Your mind is telling you that you should be mad at your boyfriend for behaving in such a way but more than anything, you’re upset too and you just want to curl up in bed and cry.

December 25

Jackson sits by the Wangs’ front porch. Today is Christmas Day, a happy occasion, but here he is, looking all gloomy.

“Hey, son, aren’t you going to eat?” His father appears beside him.

The young man just shakes his head. He most definitely is not in the mood to talk. He doesn’t want to celebrate. He just wants to see you, to be with you.

“You need to eat… Do you think your girlfriend will like it if she sees you like this? You’ll only make her worried if you get sick…”

“She knows I always feel like when she misses important occasions like this … Then why didn’t she come? If she cared, then she should’ve done something!”
