“Oh. Hey.”

“Hi,” You fake a smile at Jinyoung as he takes the seat beside you.

Of all people, why did he have to sit beside me?!

You want to hunt down Yugyeom at this very moment. He’s the one who invited you to attend this seminar that he organized and he promised to give you a good seat if you agreed to come.

So this is what he calls a ‘good’ seat? One right next to my ex-boyfriend?

Noticing that you’re just pretending, Jinyoung turns to you, “Hey, if you feel uncomfortable around me, tell me and I’ll go. A good friend of mine just invited me here anyway… He said this seminar will be fun.”

Where’s the fun in business seminars? Like hello? Maybe they set us up!

Hearing no response from you, Jinyoung stands but you grab his hand – a move that surprised both of you.

“You don’t have to go… It’s okay…” You shyly tell him.

It really is okay with you. It’s been ages since you last talked to Jinyoung. Though you don’t want to admit it, you miss him – dearly.

To date, you still regret breaking up with him five years ago – over a very childish and stupid reason.

-FLASHBACK-

“Jinyoungie…”

“Hmm?” He turns and smiles at you.

The way he looked at you, the way he smiled at you… I’m going to miss this…

“What is it? Are you okay?” He asks, his eyes full of concern.

He caresses your face, “Is something bothering you? Go on, tell me. I’m here to listen.”

“…Let’s break up.”

The words escaped your mouth before you even knew it.

Jinyoung looks at you disbelievingly.

“I said… let’s break up…”

“Why? Did I do something wrong? Did I upset you?” he panics after hearing you repeat your words.

In your two years together, you’ve felt that he’s not given you much attention. You felt that he was lacking – that he’s not the boyfriend that you dreamed of.

Before you started dating, you’ve always dreamed of having a boyfriend who’d always be by your side, who’d do all the sweetest things for you. You wanted a man who’d prepare surprises for you. You wanted someone who’d treat you well – just like how your girl friends are getting treated by their own boyfriends.

So you were disappointed that Jinyoung didn’t live up to your expectations. He was a sweet and caring boyfriend. He’d give you gifts occasionally and surprise you with little acts from time to time. But you still felt he was lacking.

“Please tell me… Please don’t leave me…” he begs you.

“I’m sorry…”

And you just left him there at the school library, where your paths first crossed.

It didn’t take long for you to realize how stupid you were for doing such.

The truth was, you broke up with Jinyoung because your so-called friend, Mary, told you that you deserved someone better. She poisoned your mind to the point that you started believing her and you started comparing Jinyoung to the boyfriends of your friends.

After you broke up with Jinyoung, you found out that Mary, the sly fox you thought was your friend, was flirting with your now ex-boyfriend. You couldn’t do anything because you had to keep your pride. You pretended not to care even if you were hurting inside.

Jinyoung did try to win you back, though. He tried to talk to you, to give you the gifts that he thought you wanted, to prepare special events just for you… but your pride still won over your heart.

I already broke up with him… I should stand by my decision…, you thought.

And so for the past five years, you tried to survive without having to see Jinyoung. You bore with you the pain of losing someone you really loved because of your own stupidity. You even left the country thinking that it’ll help you move on. Obviously, it didn’t. In fact, leaving made everything worse.

Even without Jinyoung by your side, you felt suffocated – all because of the negative thoughts and feelings that you’re keeping to yourself.

Looking back now, you don’t even know how you got past that miserable point of your life. Jinyoung was your everything and you were too stupid to let him go. You were an idiot to believe Mary and compare someone as perfect as Jinyoung to the worthless now-ex-boyfriends of your ex-friends. And you are a fool for hoping that he’s still in love with you – like you are to him.

Or maybe I still am not past that miserable point…

Sitting next to him right now brought everything back – from your misery to your feelings.

Jinyoung’s only a few meters away from you yet you feel distant.
