Lee Jieun's pov

I looked at my tiny hands that were covered with paint. I was playing alone, again, since no one wants to play with the poor girl. I saw a figure coming from the corner of the eye, so I turned my head and I recognized her to be the person, I loved the most in this lonely world.

"Mom!" I shouted happily and ran to her.

"Jieun! Come on, darling. Let's go home!" She lifted me up and carried me in our tiny red car. It was rusty, but it was enough for us, we didn't need any fancy, big cars that others had. They looked down on us, but we just stuck out our tongues and laughed after that. It was the two of us against the rest of the world. I loved it, we acted funnily and we acted crazy, screw others opinions!

This day was a special day. It was my birthday! I knew mom had baked me a cake and I had a small, but hand-made gift straight from her heart, waiting for me to come home. We sang songs that the radio played and we made funny faces to those snobbish, judgemental people that looked at us with those sour faces. Finally we drove in our yard and it started to rain. We ran inside, laughing and there it was, a beautiful cake that had three candles in it. I looked at it in awe and I couldn't help but to smile to my mom's creativity.

The cake was shaped like a four-leaf clover. "For luck." My mom said and motioned me to blow the candles. I took a deep breath and blew them all out at once. My mom smiled proudly and clapped her hands. Suddenly I could hear a loud noise that came out of nowhere.

"What was that mom?" I asked, wondering did it happen because of my wish? I only wished that we could live happily like this, until the very end. It isn't impossible, right?

My mom just smiled at me. "Jieun, that is called thunder. It's nothing to be scared, there's a way to enjoy it." She said and lifted me up, spinning couple of times before putting me down on to put on my shoes. I didn't know why she was putting my shoes on, I just looked at her loving smile that she had on her face.

I was tempted to touch her cheeks, so I did so. Her cheek felt warm and it felt so soft. She looked up, straight to my eyes and caressed my cheeks too. I smiled as I felt her gentle touch that made my heart flutter warmly. She continued caressing my cheeks, until I closed my eyes. I want to always feel like this.. I thought.

"Now you have your shoes! Let mom put hers on and then we go outside!" She said and lowered her hand, her warmth never leaving my cheeks? I looked outside the window and I saw that it was pouring.

"It's raining.." I stated, not being able to get her point. Mom nodded and smiled even wider, her eyes gleamed in excitement.

"Yes! Now we're going there and play around all day long!" She said happily. Play..? I felt enthusiastic at the thought and I couldn't wait that mom was ready. I was hopping up and down, telling her to hurry up since I wanted to play sooooo badly.

We went outside and really played for hours as she promised. Suddenly she got a phone call and she hurriedly told me to go inside. I followed her orders and waited her. She came in, but she looked extremely stressed when she quickly did her make up and packed some stuff in her purse. She didn't even think twice leaving me alone and I'm only three years old! I knew something was wrong, she would never leave me alone if everything was okay. She even wore different pairs of shoes and her fast make-up was a total mess.

"Jieun, mommy has to go now, I will return soon. I'll give your present after I come back, will you be a good girl and wait for mommy?" She asked and caressed my cheek again. I nodded and placed my hand on hers. She pulled her hand away and just quickly left after she pecked my brow. I smiled and waved at her as I watched her leave with her car and I glanced at the dark clouds. Will we play in the rain next time? I asked myself, hoping for rain as I fell asleep.

The next thing I knew, was that the police came knocking on our door and when I opened it, they took me away from our lovely home. I didn't understand what they tried to explain, I didn't want to. They were talking like I was a small baby, which I'm not. I've stayed home alone couple of times. I'm a big girl already, I can survive alone. I was taken to the police station and I saw someone laying on the weird thing that was pulled from the wall.

"Mom?" I asked, but this time, I got no answer to my calls. I desperatly called her multiple times, but still no answer. "Mom? Why are you just laying there? Please, open you eyes! Mom!" I pleaded. Why did this happen? I just wished for a happy ever after to the the of us, but now she just lies there, looking pale with a hint of blue. I saw some red on her head. Why did she paint herself?

I caressed her cheek carefully, feeling how cold and unliving she was. Her cheek wasn't warm. Her eyes were tightly shut. Her chest didn't rise evenly, indicating that she didn't breathe. That she was dead. That we would never play in the water together anymore. Still, I couldn't hate rain, I couldn't help but to hear my mother's laugh from the sound of rain, smell her fresh fragnance evrytime I sniffed the fresh air, think of her caressing hands on my cheeks when the rain hit my face.

Now I don't wish anymore.

I slowly opened my eyes and wiped my cheeks filled with tears. This happened every time on this one particular day of a year without exception. 

Happy birthday, me.

This is Jieun's memory of the day her mother died.. How was it? Was it touching? I tried hard :) I thought I would do a double update today but I think I can't, I have to babysit my 5 year old brother. Thanks for minrin98iw for the upvote!!
