Chapter 8

The Other Girl

Nayoung woke up with a jolt, almost falling off her chair in the process. He quickly glared at the open window, the reason for pulling her from her wonderful dream. She hated how the sun would just conveniently shine through that window every single morning, without fail. It was always so bright and warm, and so damn annoying. Through such a tiny window, the light managed to invade her room and blind her no matter which corner of her room she was in. The sun tickled her skin unpleasantly, and Nayoung covered her face with her arms in a futile attempt to keep the blinding glare away.

"Aish.." The girl rubbed her eyes sloppily and looked around the room. Why was she sleeping on the table? There was a dull ache in her spine from the awkward position she slept in. Nayoung stretched her back, wincing slightly at the sound of her bones cracking. She paused mid-stretch, her eyes slowly widening with realisation.

Her assignment was due today.

The girl literally jumped off her chair, eyes frantically searching everywhere for her assignment and Lu Han's laptop, which had also somehow conveniently disappeared. Had Lu Han taken it back? Did that mean everything she did on that laptop was gone?

"Eotteokhae. Eotteokhae. Eotteokhae..." She was freaking out. How could she have fallen asleep? And why did this happen now? She scolded herself for being such an idiot. Nayoung's panicked movements came to an abrupt halt, her eyes landing on a stack of paper that was about to fall off her desk.

Her hands grabbed it quickly and she examined the piece, recognising it immediately as her work. No errors, not even one mistake. It looked perfect. Nayoung's eyebrows twisted into a frown. She was 100% sure that she had fallen asleep before completing the assignment, but it was right in her hands, perfect, completed. The girl bit her lip in thought, who would help her with this? She only had one person in mind that would ever help her, Taemin, but that it was impossible. He was on the other side of town. Did she doing it during her sleep? Okay, now she was thinking of stupid things. She wondered for a minute, smiling like an idiot when she thought about the possibility. Could Lu Han have done it for her? She felt herself go giddy, the grin on her face growing to an almost alien like size. Did he actually do it for her? She couldn't quite believe it. The logical side of her brain was telling her that it wasn't possible. Why would he even help her? He hated her, she was sure he would rather see her suffer.

She spotted a sticky note stuck on one of the corners of her assignment, and her doubts disappeared as soon as she saw it: Don't steal my laptop next time.

So he did help her.

Nayoung felt her heart race, a grin pulling at . The girl leaped down the stairs in an ecstatic mood, she didn't even care that she tripped and bruised her knee in the process. She just hoped that she didn't wake up too late and Lu Han had already left.

"Lu Han oppaaaaa."

But she had expected, the male had already left for school.

Tch, typical.

Despite the empty house, Nayoung's mood was still as good as ever. She couldn't contain the smile on her features. Lu Han was starting to care, a little bit, a tiny bit, a teensy bit. He didn't hate her so much now, maybe. If he did, he wouldn't had helped her right? Or maybe he was the type of person to help others, and she was just deluding herself and creating fantasies that weren't real. She just decided to stick to the first reason. Maybe she was thinking a bit too far ahead, but she let herself dream a bit. She really didn't care if she was just imagining things, it was fine with her. It gave her a little bit of hope, and that was something she really needed after two years of absolutely nothing.

The sea of students all turned to the door when it slide open. Nayoung walked in with a new air of confidence that had been missing for the previous two days. A cocky smirk stretched across her lips as she sat down. Kyungmi locked eyes with the girl by accident, looking away quickly when the queenka sneered unpleasantly at her.

The teacher walked in as soon as the bell rang, "Okay class, time to start presenting. Nayoung, it seems that Minyoung is away today, are you okay with presenting by yourself?"

Nayoung scoffed, she already knew that Minyoung was never going to show up anyway, "It's fine."
The teacher gestured for her to come up to the front of the class. Her classmates followed the overly confident girl curiously. It looked like her assignment problems were dealt with smoothly. The girl walked with such reassurance that it was almost spiteful. She was so full of herself.

Kyungmi watched as she presented, trying to find faults, but there were none. It was almost strange how she managed to complete her project in only two days. Her mind flashed back to the image of Taemin and Nayoung in the cafeteria, suspicion starting to web into her thoughts. Did Taemin actually do the assignment for her? It was almost impossible to finish if she didn't get help, considering what position she was in. Kyungmi tried not to think so negatively, but it just seemed to fit so well. She wasn't going to deny that her classmates thoughts were affecting her own opinion either. It was just that everything she thought of just led to the same conclusion; Taemin had to have done it for her, or helped her. There was just no other way.

~~~~
"Yah, Lee Minyoung." Nayoung called her name harshly, voice dripping with poison. She looked down upon the girl at her locker, feeling the anger boil inside her. What a coincidence, Minyoung had arrived at school right after history class. She narrowed her eyes with distaste as the pathetic girl laughed shyly with her friends. She hated people like her, the ones that relied on others for support. Those all-so-perfect little angels that everyone adored and pitied because they had 'such a hard life' and they were such 'hardworking people', but in reality they were probably one of the luckiest people on the planet. Minyoung was pretty much a Kyungmi number two, version 2.0. And according to everyone in the school, her headache had apparently gotten better so she was fine to go to school. The girl almost laughed at how ridiculously stupid that excuse was.
Minyoung looked up innocently, and feigned an apologetic look, "Oh, sorry about not being with you for the presentation. I was hoping to get there on time, but I guess I was just a tad late." The girl forced her muscles into a disappointed smile, hoping that it was enough to calm the queenka's anger. She had not expected Nayoung to be this furious, and a tiny hint of fear was starting to crawl into her thoughts when she met a sharp pair of eyes. Her eyes were so intimidating, and at that moment, Minyoung realised that she was in for trouble.
Aw crap.
"You think it's funny?" Nayoung roughly shoved the girl's shoulder, smirking when she saw the girl wince. She slammed Minyoung's locker door closed violently, complimenting herself silently for being about to frighten Minyoung.
"You think you can pull this with me and get away with it?" The queenka pushed her again, harder this time. Her victim stumbled back a few paces.
"I'm sorry, please don't be angry," Minyoung spoke in a quiet voice, backing away slowly as the other girl advanced.
"You know, I really despise princesses like you." Nayoung raised her hand, ready to slap the girl across the cheek when a male student intervened by grabbing her arm to stop her. She recognised the student instantly, Nam Woohyun. Stupid prince charming had come to save the day.
"She said sorry okay, leave her alone." Woohyun's hand tightened around her arm, his iron grip staying firm when she struggled against it. Nayoung forced herself to keep a poker face, her arm was really starting to hurt. He was digging his nails into her arm, and he was holding on so tightly her arm felt like it was going to break.
"I was wondering when you'd show up. I was waiting for you to save your little angel, like a good boyfriend would," Nayoung's words came out glacially cold. She eyed Minyoung with contempt, twisting her face into a scowl when the students around them gathered like sheep, whispering words of comfort to her.
"Are you okay Minyoung?"
"Oh you poor girl."
"Don't let it bother you okay?"
"We're here for you."
She scoffed bitterly at the sight, it was so pathetic that it made her eyes hurt. Nayoung roughly shook Woohyun's hand off of her. She rubbed her arm slightly, that was probably going to bruise.
"Woohyun oppa!" Minyoung ran toward him with tears in her eyes.
"It's okay," The said male wrapped his arms around her protectively, sending a glare toward the queenka as his girlfriend cried into his shirt. The girl resisted the urge to throw up. The scene was just oh so beautifully touching that heartfelt tears were stinging at her eyes. (That was sarcasm if you didn't pick it up) Nayoung's eyes locked with Woohyun's. He was pissed off. Really pissed off. She could see the pure hatred burning in his eyes, it looked like he wanted to kill her and eat her alive. She matched his gaze with an equally unpleasant one, not wavering until the male looked away.
"Let's go, you don't need to deal with this Minyoung." Woohyun guided his girlfriend away, turning his head back once more to sneer at her. And Nayoung caught something in his brown eyes that made her blood boil.
Contempt.
__________
The constant murmuring of students seemed even more lively than usual. The buzz of gossip even louder than the time Kyungmi was first seen with Lu Han, but this time, it was centered around Nayoung again.
"I swear this is getting so annoying, it's just one thing after another isn't it?" Chanyeol, rolled his eyes at what the student's were talking about. Nayoung was always the center of attention wasn't she? She just took the spotlight wherever she went, it was so attention seeking and Chanyeol found it infuriating that he had to listen to his classmates as they continued to gossip. It was getting so damn annoying. What he would give just for one day without hearing about what the queenka was up to.
Baekhyun sighed and nodded his head in agreement, "Yeah, I'm getting tired of all this hype about Nayoung."
A chorus of nodding heads told the two beagle line members that the rest of the group agreed.
The group of twelve, and Kyungmi, had decided for a change of setting. They had left the cafeteria to scarf down their lunch elsewhere, the soccer field. Half of the reason was because they wanted to avoid the noise, the other half was that the two oldest hyungs just wanted to kick a ball around.
"I don't even know what happened, these girls in my class said that she bribed him to do her work for her, but then I heard that he did the whole assignment for her too." Kris shook his head, clearly showing his disapproval.
Lu Han shot a glare at Kris that went unnoticed, not quite liking what he was hearing.
Suho almost laughed at how ridiculous it was, he had heard a completely different story, "Well I heard that she forced him or blackmailed him or something."
"And today at lunch she was harassing her partner even though she got the project done on time."
"I heard she slapped her partner too."
"Shut up guys." Lu Han breathed out heavily, feeling a spark of anger in the pit of his stomach. This wasn't right. He didn't know why this was irking him so much. He just didn't quite like the fact that all these negative accusations were being made about Nayoung, especially when it wasn't true. He couldn't stand it. All twelve heads turned in his direction, looking at him with a new found confusion. Why was he so snappy? He seemed kind of pissed off.
Kyungmi's features twisted into a frown, "What's wrong?" The male seemed slightly more sensitive than usual at the mention of Nayoung. He was usually so indifferent about it, he never even cared. Did something happen between them?
Lu Han ran a frustrated hand through his hair. Why was he getting so worked up over nothing? He hadn't meant to sound so harsh to his friends, even he was taken back by the hostility in his voice.
"Sorry guys. All this crap about Nayoung is getting to me, it isn't even true. Taemin barely did anything, he just fixed a few minor errors."
His friends sent apologetic looks, knowing that they were part of the reason for his discomfort. Kyungmi couldn't help but notice the way he spoke so confidently, like he was absolutely sure Nayoung was not at fault. He sounded almost angry, no, he was angry. And she couldn't help but realise that her smile had completely disappeared. She could feel a twinge of jealousy. Knowing that something had happened between them without her knowledge wasn't necessarily the most reassuring thing. She was taken from her train of thought when she heard the kung-fu panda speak.
"But hyung, who else would help her?" Tao rested his chin on the palm of his hand, "besides Taemin, I don't think anyone would be willing to give her a hand."
Something stirred within him, he felt almost hurt by the words that left the chinese maknae's mouth, "What do you mean no one would be willing to give her a hand? I helped her." Lu Han regretted defending the queenka as soon as the words left his lips. An awkward silence captured the group, minus the sound of Chanyeol eating a carrot, and Tao quickly averted his eyes away from the doe eyed male. He rubbed his neck sheepishly, maybe he shouldn't have said that. It was obvious his words had affected Lu Han, but they all just didn't know why.
As if the school had sensed the awkward exchange between the students, the bell rang right on time, breaking the tension that had unknowingly built up between them.
~~~~

"Why'd you do it?"

"Hm?" Lu Han turned his head to the left, meeting eyes with a troubled Kim Jongdae.

"Why'd you help her?" Chen knew he was being pushy, and it was probably annoying the hell out of the older male, but he couldn't control the curiosity from creeping up. He noticed Lu Han's eyes darken slightly, it was pbvious he had been trying to avoid this question, but he pressed on anyway, "I mean, you don't exactly like her that much. You have no obligation to help her. It's not like she really needed a good grade either. And everyone's saying she deserves it. So why?"

Lu Han heaved a sigh, combing a hand through his hair, completely messing up his fringe. "I don't know okay?" He paused for a slight moment, trying to think of a satisfactory explanation, "I just... She just seemed so stressed out.. And she was working herself to exhaustion.. And I just.. I don't know."

Lu Han stole a glance at Chen, the guy seemed so confused. He would have laughed if it was in any other situation, but in all honesty, Lu Han was just as confused himself.
