As soon as Mr. Hua disappeared, I turned to where Tao lay. “Tao?” I rested my hand on his shoulder, but he didn’t move. I shook him, but he didn’t respond. “TAO!!” I screamed, as if the sound of my voice would wake him up. I put my ear on my chest to be rewarded with the faint sound of his heartbeat, the small motion of his chest moving up and down to breathe.

My hands fumbled as I reached for my cell phone. “We need an ambulance,” I said in a shaking voice as the emergency operator came on. “I have a friend, and he’s been knocked unconscious.”

“Okay, stay put.”

I hung up and looked back at Tao, grasping his hand, tears coming to my eyes. This guy sacrificed so much for me the past few days. If he left me now, I would never forgive myself.

The faint sound of a siren grew stronger. I looked up to see the familiar white vehicle drive up. Immediately, two paramedics jumped out and I stood up, letting go of Tao. They immediately got to work, checking his vital signs, fitting him into a neck brace and strapping him on a stretcher.

When they got him on the ambulance and started to close the doors, I ran forward. “Wait!” I leaped into the back as they hesitated.

One of the medics gave me a strange look, so I explained, “I’m his girlfriend.”

He nodded and continued his duties, asking me what I knew about the incident. When we finally fell in silence, I replayed my words in my head.

Tao’s girlfriend.

If he even survived.
