“…her?”

“Yes, Uncle….promised.”

“Good.”

I stifled a groan as the world came back to me. When I opened my eyes, it was dark where I was. All I could hear were snippets of the voices around me. I closed my eyes, wishing I was in a better place. What had I done that got me here? I was too weak to think about it. How long had I been here?

From beneath my eyelids, I saw light entering my surroundings. Suddenly everything was red with a click, and a hand forced my chin up. I tensed for a split second before hanging limp. Half of me was scolding myself for losing my disguise given to me in my situation. The other half was too drowsy to care, too tired to fight back.

A tongue clicked. “Still not awake,” a deep, harsh voice said in disgust. My ears perked up. Where had I heard that person before? “I warned you about overdosing, yes?”

“Yes, Uncle, I-“ A higher voice stammered.

“No excuses!” The voice growled, dropping my chin abruptly. My head ricocheted towards my chest before hanging loosely. “She will be even weaker when she wakes up, delaying my plans! Don’t you understand that time is everything?” His voice became less and less, as if he was walking away.

“Y-yes, Uncle.”

“You might as well check all the other preparations since you have already failed me once.” A door slammed in the distance.

Light footsteps approached me. Suddenly my wrists were pulled behind me, and I felt the cuffs on my hands. The person pulled at them, as if making sure they wouldn’t come loose. I gritted my teeth as my skin broke when it rubbed against the metal. How long had they handled my arms so harshly?

Slowly, my mind came to life. I had been grabbed on the street, forced to breath something-oh god.

And just as quickly as I had woken up, I faded back into nothingness.

The next time I opened my eyes, a flare of red behind my eyes had woken me up.

“Finally our sleeping beauty awakes,” came a sarcastic voice.

As my vision focused, I found myself staring in the face of Mr. Hua.
