Amber’s POV

I just got back from my work on the kitchen and saw Puppy on her corner scribbling on her notebook. She looked up to me when I entered the cell and gave me her bright smile.

“Oh, finished already Ambo?”

“Yep… its almost snack time. Should we have coffee Puppy? Its chilly outside brrrr~!”

We set up the table at the middle of the room and made our coffee. I took out the bread I made this morning from the kitchen and gave her share.

I can sense that behind the bright smile she showed me, Puppy is feeling a bit lonely today. Maybe because its Christmas Eve and she misses her family…

Speaking of family, she haven’t told me where her family is. When I asked Eomma about it, she said its better to hear it from Puppy.

She was cupping the mug with her hands blowing the hot mist coming from the black coffee she has when I started to ask her.

“Puppy… how come I don’t hear anyone from your family visiting you? Where are they?” I noticed she stiffened a little before placing her mug down on the table still cupping it.

“I-I don’t have a family Ambo… I grew up from the orphanage..” Oh Amber you little ! You made her sad!

I stared at her from my seat holding my mug too, finding the right words to say. Should I say, ‘I’m sorry’ or just say ‘Oh..’ to her?!

Before I could even say another stupid word, Puppy beat me to it and became her usual ‘happy pill self’ smiling at me brightly “Yah! Don’t feel bad about me! It’s okay… I’m already used to it so just ask away whatever you want to know. I thought Soojung told you about it…”

She chuckles “I grew up in an orphanage.. the nuns said that they found me one chilly winter day like this, they said I’m approximately 3 months old that time.. wrapped in a thick blanket with a note that says ‘Sunyoung’…that’s why they named me Sunyoung. So I never knew who my parents are and the nuns basically raised me, when I turned 18 instead of studying I started to do odd jobs just to earn money and contribute to the orphanage. I have nowhere to go… that place was my home and since its a private institution funds are limited. I helped take care of the kids and earn money to cover the expenses with my fellow orphans who are at age too.”

“Is that the reason you started doing the swindling thing?”

She smiled at the mention of it and took a sip of her coffee before answering me. “Yes, that’s one of the main reason. If we don’t earn enough money for the orphanage or get a sponsor who will donate money continuously, the government will shut us down and all the kids will be place in foster homes or in other orphanages in the countryside. I don’t want them to be sent far away that’s why I did everything to save them from being taken from us. I consider them as my younger brothers and sisters… I saw them grew up and taught them everything. I met this girl in one of my jobs as a driver, you know, they call me to drive someone drunk home. She was with a drunk old guy that time and I was suppose to drive them to wherever they want to go.”

“She’s good with words and was able to sweet talk the old man into transferring money from his account to hers just by online banking on his cellphone! I know it because I can hear them talking while I’m driving. I don’t know how much she got but I know its a lot judging by the way she smiled that night. We dropped off the old man on his house and when she was already alone she asked me if I want to learn her tricks. She knew I was listening… because I was so desperate to earn money I said yes to her and that was the start. She taught me everything about swindling and since I’m a good actress back when I was still in High School, I used it as my advantage and the rest is history.”

Wow… i know Puppy has a kind heart. But I didn’t know her heart is made of Gold.

I took a sip of my coffee before asking her again “So you have saved the orphanage, right? With all the money you have earned?”

“Yes I did! But I didn’t tell the nuns where I get the money… I tell them its a donation. They don’t ask because well… who says no for a freaking donation from generous philanthropists? The problem was I didn’t stop when it was already enough… I wanted more… so here I am, with you inside this cell. That last old guy I almost duped… tsk tsk tsk… I’m so stupid to bite that trap. It was my last mission and I failed. Oh well~~ that’s life…”

I swirled the remnants of the black liquid in my mug and sighed. Yuri unnie said they are doing their best about Puppy’s case. Dad saw some loopholes on it, something about the entrapment operation that was done. They are also preparing some petition for an early parole on her in grounds of good conduct inside the facility so there is a chance Puppy could get out earlier than expected.

“So… you have no family who visits you, no friends or boyfriend too?!”

She burst out laughing on the boyfriend thing and glared at me in a joking manner “Ambo… Ambo. I was too busy earning money and thinking about the next character or next rich person who I will swindle that I already forgot how to be in love. Love was the last thing on my mind that time…”

“Even crushes Puppy?!”

“How petty Ambo… crushes are for those teenagers only. Well okay, add that Australian actor who played Wolverine--”

“Hugh Jackman?!”

“Ne! He’s my crush!”

“How about someone realistic Puppy…” I snorted at her. She tried to kick me on the floor but I luckily dodged it.

“Haha… I don’t know… meeting guys and falling in love was already pushed at the back of my head when I came of age. Maybe because I have a goal… a mission. But of course, I do dream of meeting someone who will take care of me too and have a family. But because of this…” she smiled and made a gesture showing our surroundings “It will be impossible I bet. Who wants to marry a girl who doesn’t have a family and who just came out of prison?”

I patted her head smiling kindly at her, understanding what she is feeling. Living in a country like Korea who values family background and status more than the goodness of a person, Puppy is saying the truth.

I flicked her forehead playfully and asked her “What do you look for in a guy, tell me? Maybe I can introduce some of my friends to you… Oh wait… I don’t have any friends left hahaha!!! I forgot they all disappeared when I was arrested and sentenced. But I have Henry… do you want Henry? He’s a ladiesman but loyal to the one he loves.”

“NO! No plans of hooking up with your friend.”

“So what do you look for on a guy? Good looking? Has a nice smile?” she nodded while chewing a big chunk of bread making full “Tall?” nodded again “Rich?” she nodded excitedly widening her eyes. I flicked her forehead hard earning a slap on my arms from her while I laugh. “Puppy I suggest you sleep early later so you can dream about that guy you want!”

She swallowed the bread she was chewing while rubbing the part that I flicked pouting at me. She managed to kick me on my thighs repeatedly making me laugh loudly while dodging her. Her legs are too short for her kick to be painful hahaha!

She stopped her assault and glared at me before flicking my nose. Awww!!!

I was rubbing my nose grinning at her before she spoke again after finishing her coffee. She wiped with a tissue and smiled triumphantly at me.

“Honestly… all I want is a guy who will love me for what I am and not for what I was. A guy who will be stupid enough to like me because of my sense of humor and will understand what I did in the past. Someone who will sweep me off my feet with his stupid sense of humor too even its cringy and corny… at least he tried.”

“And rich…”

She made a smug smile and pulled me beside her draping her arms on my shoulders like we’re some bros making me laugh again.

“Yes, definitely must be rich!”

Soojung’s POV

I celebrated Christmas Eve with our family, but it feels so empty without her. Since Dad is newly divorced, he gave the house to Mrs. Liu and bought a new unit where Yuri unnie lives. Sooyeon unnie and I still live at our family house since we can’t let go of it. It was what our parents left us that’s why we don’t want to leave it.

We hosted a Christmas Eve dinner in our house with Dad, Baba, Yuri unnie and their brother Changmin oppa. He told us that he will be taking the exam for the last time and if he still won’t succeed, he will find a work that suits him.

On Christmas day, we did a volunteer work and held a party for the inmates. Amber and I got to spend Christmas day together same with Eomma, Puppy, and Ssul. Even though we didn’t have the time to be alone, it’s okay. What’s important is we are together and that’s enough.

Bao Lian wasn’t able to join us that day to be with Eomma because he got a call from China saying that he is needed at Singapore where their Grandfather resides. Yes, the older Zhang is still alive and kicking. Baba said their father is a very nice oldman and that he will surely love me, he also knows about Amber as Baba already told him. Eomma wasn’t sad at all because she got to speak with her parents over the phone greeting them. She saidthey have been doing it every year and it never fails, the only good thing is Baba as her Uncle is here to celebrate with her. We also have Puppy with us because she’s family too, we are a family that will never be apart.

As a gift for Puppy, I donated a quite large sum of the money I received from the Ohs to the orphanage where she came from. She was so happy when I told her about it because I know Puppy cherish that orphanage so much… that’s where she came from and its one of the reasons she did all those things just to keep the orphanage running.

Amber told me Shannon visited her and asked for her forgiveness. Shannon told her that we have met accidentally and had a talk about her. That her ex-girlfriend admitted to her about the drugs that was found inside her house is hers and not Amber’s.

I asked her if she had forgiven Shannon about what happened, she said yes.

“I have forgiven her a long time ago Soojung… the moment I realized I’m in love with you that’s the time I have forgiven her.”

I also met Ssul’s friend, Minho. He came to the facility to celebrate Christmas with Ssul and give his gift. Amber told me Ssul is planning to accept Minho and finally make it official, I’m so happy for her! Her dreams of having her sketches be exhibit has come true and now a man who loves her and cares for her after the nightmare she has been through.

Months passed and everything are already falling perfectly into place. With the help of Sooyeon unnie and Henry we decided to finally open a small bake shop like what Amber dreamed of. My classes with Ch
