You Got MeCora sat beside Nick in silence as he drove through the drive-thru for McDonalds, which Cora absolutely hated. He’d just picked her up from her mother’s. where she’d had a short dinner and discussed plans with her mother and her step father, before leaving to return to MinHee’s hospital room.
She’d asked her brother to stop and get MinHee a sandwich, and he’d decided McDonalds was a good idea. “So,” He said, passing the bag to Cora, who was still silent in the passenger’s seat. “Is she figuring things out or is she still entirely out of it?”
Cora frowned. “She remembers Mark. She remembers everything before that midterm performance, but nothing after, except for Mark, for whatever reason.”
“It wasn’t even like they were that close,” Nick said, shaking his head as he pulled away from the drive-thru. “I mean, not that he’s not a great guy, but why not Jackson? Or everything about you that happened after?”
Cora shrugged her shoulders, eating one of the french fries from the bag. “I don’t mind. I think he’s a little touched by it. And I’m sure this means they’ll be a little closer than they initially were, but it makes absolutely no sense.”
Nick nodded. “Does she remember anything else?”
“She didn’t even remember she could talk.”
Nick let out a low whistle. “Well then.” He said, continuing the drive in silence. As he pulled up to the hospital, she sighed. “Just tell her I say hi, okay? Even if she doesn’t remember me.” Cora nodded. “And if any weird crap happens, call me.”
Cora laughed, climbing out of the car. “I will,” She promised, starting towards the hospital as her brother drove away.
She awkwardly made her way through the hospital doors and crept past the check in desk, since visiting hours were over. She told MinHee she would be back for her. She wasn’t about to break that promise. She couldn’t remember anything, and breaking a promise was the wrong way to restart their friendship.
The bag felt like a weight in Cora's hands the closer She got to MinHee’s hospital room. There were others in the waiting room when Cora passed. Most were crying. Others were trying to comfort their friends and Cora felt guilty for everything. She was so worried about MinHee that she forgot there were Others in pain. She was positive that most of the people hadnt gone home to sleep or eat and here she was, acting selfishly when she had been home, she knew her friend wasn't dying.
As she walked down the hall, she made a mental note on the number of individuals in the waiting room. She couldn't get them a bed, but at least she could make things a little less dismal.
MinHee sat up in her bed when Cora moved into the room. Cora was holding a McDonalds bag in one hand and her phone in the other. She smiled happily, shaking the bag in MinHee's direction.
But before Cora could say a word, MinHee spoke. "Did I have a relationship with Jackson Wang?" MinHee didn't need an answer. When she asked the question and Cora's face fell, she knew the answer. "Why didn't anyone tell me? Why didn't he tell me?"
Cora didn't move. She didn't look at MinHee as she spoke. "Thats because you t
