Hana waved goodbye to her mum as she drove away in her silver Toyota, leaving her all on her own in the midst of wild animals. Of course they weren’t really wild animals, but the way the students bumped into each other and shoved past one another really seemed like it. Hana flipped her wavy light brown hair from her face, clutching the straps of her backpack tightly. Her feet shuffled through the door, her eyes bulging out of her eyes as she looked around the place. She was a first year student here, and her primary school had been a small little place with only a few hundred students. “Stupid first years!” someone yelled out in frustration, pushing through. Hana continued to gaze around, until her fragile little body was thrown forward when the older kids pushing past her. Hana managed to regain her balance, though only just. At that same time, a baby faced boy held her elbows to make sure she would stay on her feet. His brown eyes were big and shiny, a friendly smile plastered on his face. “Annyeong! I’m Sanghyuk! I’m a second year. Want to be friends?” he beamed. “Of course no one would want to be your friend, loser.” Another second year student jeered. Sanghyuk’s big eyes started to water, his smile drooping like a withering flower. Hana frowned, turning to the students who had spoken, pointing at them. “Yah!” a lot of heads turned to them, making her cheeks redden. The older students towered over her, staring down at her like she was a weed. “Yes, you. You think it’s funny to call someone a loser, hmm? Well if he is a loser then picking on him only makes you an even bigger loser!” Hana jabbed at the second year that’d made fun of Sanghyuk. Sanghyuk wiped his eyes with the backs of his hands and looked at her in confusion and slight admiration. Hisses and meow sounds were heard from all the students who had been listening in to them. The second year was stunned by the girl’s burst of confidence. Meanwhile, Hana had taken hold of Sanghyuk’s wrist and dragged him away from the crowds. She continued to frown.

 

And yes, that girl was me. Since that day, Sanghyuk had not only been my best friend, but had also referred to me as his ‘wonder woman’. I had blushed the first time he called me by it, because the use of the word ‘woman’ made it feel like he was not just a girl, not just his best friend, but someone he looked up to. Sanghyuk was known to my family as shiny boy, as his name referred to shining. It wasn’t only that, though, that made them call him that. He was always smiling, always laughing, and his eyes just always seemed to have that special sparkle in them. He was my Sanghyuk.  As we both grew older, although we remained as close as we always were, his eyes lost that sparkle. He didn’t smile or laugh a lot anymore, he was always more serious. When I had told my mum about it, she had just told me that it’s a part of growing up; that you lose some of that child-like innocence. I had thought about ditching him a few times, though when I thought about it, our friendship was too special to just throw away. In the end, I always thought back to one thing; I had fallen for him. It was that thought, scary and unordinary to me at the time that made me force myself to move on.   And get a boyfriend.   When I first thought of the plan, I cringed and shivered, feeling creeped out by the idea of even thinking of any boy like that. But I always managed to tell myself that I already did think of Sanghyuk like that; just that he was far too serious to pay much attention to me anymore. That spring was when we found ourselves beginning to drift apart. My first method of coping was to get a boyfriend. Park Hyunho was three years older than me. At first, I thought it was kind of gross, but as we got to know each other, I found he was a gentleman. He always knew what to say to make me smile, he always opened the door for me, and he even stole my first kiss. Our first kiss was a little early I guess, and I wasn’t really all too ready. My cheeks flushed a salmon pink as I looked away, fiddling with my hands.
