Why should he care? It’s not as if he would get anywhere from it. Taekwoon was what you’d call an outcast; his whole family was. They were a lot poorer than the other families in the area, and that only meant that finding a job would be in vain – nobody even looked at him, so what chance was there of ever getting a job? He continued to sit watching the pretty colourful leaves float to the ground in piles like the piles of his homework sheets. It didn’t matter if he did it or not – he was pretty sure the teacher hated him, and made no attempt to hide it. Nobody spoke up about it, nobody asked about it and Taekwoon never told. To him, catching a glimpse of the cocoa haired boy through his window was nothing unusual. Frost blanketed the window from the outside, but warmth embraced from within. That was more than could be said about Taekwoon; the frost was embedded deep in his chest like a dagger.     Once again, I passed the window on the way home from school, once again stopping to look through his window; Hakyeon, that cocoa brown haired boy at the end of the street. I smiled to myself seeing him snuggle up with his dog by the fireplace. My hot breath hit the cold window pane and left a misty shadow behind. He turned his head, his eyes catching mine for a moment, before I looked away, afraid of being caught staring at him. He was the most beautiful thing I had ever seen. I had liked to watch him ever since we were small children, especially when he played with other children. I really liked those memories because he would be smiling and laughing. He had bloomed into a delicate flower. In class, he’d be chatting loudly with his friends and cracking jokes. He was an oddball. All the girls (and guys) would crowd around him, giving him letter after letter. It must have been tiring. Although how would I know? I’m just invisible matter; the cracks in the pavement. The one no one looks at. Cast away by even my own friends, if friend is the word you’d use. Hakyeon was different from others, he’d occasionally look at me, smile at me, even wave at me. But it never got any further. No words were ever spoken. But I wish they had. If only I could find a way to get him to speak to me. Just once – even if it’s merely hello.   I sped up my walking pace, trying to hide the small blush on my cheeks. Great. He saw me. I couldn’t afford for Hakyeon to speak of our encounter or I’d be ruined. It felt like a deadly sin to do so much as to look at someone as perfect as him; his smooth, tanned skin, his bright smile, his cute laugh. Perhaps I know too much about him. It’s unsafe. Like plucking a rare flower from the ground. Like a flower, he bloomed slowly and only got more precious by the day. I leant my head back against the doorway, closing my eyes. Taekwoon, just get through the month without screwing up, okay? If Hakyeon is the beautiful flower, then what am I? The moon that smiles upon him? The rain that rains upon him? The cold wind that shrivels him? Perhaps the last one is more likely. I’m nothing like him; he’s lovable, I’m unwanted,
