Chapter 30

Hope

The man in his 30’s that sat on the chair, burying himself on a book took a glance at the girl laying in front of him before continuing his previous act, reading.  She watched his every move ever since she came into the room, or the better word for it, appeared in the room.  The girl doesn’t interest her as she knew who it was and what the girl state of condition was, because as weird as it may sound, the motionless girl was actually her, in physical form.  Her main interest now was the man.  And the book on the side table next to him.

When is he going to leave?  Doesn’t he need to go to the washroom or something?’ she grumbled to herself, tired of waiting.  Waiting for her chance to get hold of the book.

She just can’t mortalize herself in front of him and not raise a scene.  Because that would not be a good idea, though terrorizing him a bit does seemed like a good idea at the moment.  Soo Min let out another sigh.  Probably her fourth or fifth sigh ever since she was there, an hour ago, calculating by the wall clock in the room.

She stood up and was about to walk out of the room, trying to watch some television on the waiting room, when the man closed the book in front of him and stood up from his chair, making his way out, hopefully to the washroom.  She perked, smiling.  Yu Soo Min quickly eyed him until he was no longer in sight, before putting on the necklace.  She was determined.  She’s going to get her answers tonight.  She owed that to herself and secretly, she felt that she owed it to her future, with Jung Min.

The book, or the diary was finally in her hands.  Trying to maintain anonymous, she took the book and hid herself at the corner of the room, near the opened door.  Pages by pages she scanned through, trying to find anything that worth reading.  At first, she thought it was weird seeing him having a diary, like the opposite since he doesn’t look the type, but by looking at the diary, she understood him more.

The diary was not like the normal diary girls would write in them.  The book was looking more like a sketchbook scheduler.  There are certain pages only where she would find his writings.  And the writings can only be found on a certain date.  The book has been written on them since the year 2007 and still, there are a quarter of pages unfilled.

She stopped on the first writings, ignoring the dates he had to go for meetings, appointments, dates and the little scenery drawings.

18th April 2007

It has been 5 years now.  Still holding onto the phone, but again,  to afraid to call.  How is she holding up on this day? She’s 20 now this month.  I’m sorry to have left you alone.

She read the writings again.  The date.  The death anniversary of her parents.  And he still keeps track of her birthday?  She flipped through the book again, looking for more writings.

25th December 2007

Christmas.  And alone.  Wonder what she’s been doing?  Heard from a friend that my little sister works for the police as a computer expert.  Never thought that as her profession.  I really changed her.  Well, at least she’s doing well.

That was the end of 2007.  The year had changed to 2008.

You really did change me, Yu Su Kwan.  And that was a surprised to you?’ she snorted, flipping at the pages more furiously.  Her anger has started to overwhelm her, little by little.

4th February 2008

The payment finally done.  I finally have paid off my debt to them.  I’m free to go back to my hometown.  We are finally free from them.  Will she accept me if I’m back?

This writings confused her.  ‘What does he mean by we are finally free?  And who is them?’

She tried to search more  information on ‘them’ from the diary but nothing else came about it again.  However, she found something else.  Something far more confusing.  Her pictures.  In 2009.  She held the pictures.  All 5 of them and took a closer look at them.  They are pictures of her coming out of her apartment, having lunch by herself at the police department’s cafeteria, coming out from the convenience store, on her laptop in a café and her taking a bus, probably to work.  All the pictures have different dates from the month of March to May.

He’s stalking me?  He was here in Seoul for 3 months?

“Who are you?  What are you doing?”

She whipped her head towards the voice automatically and was stunned to see the face of her brother, gaping in shock back at her.  Her hand touched the necklace straight away but her mind was thinking of something else.  She wanted the answers.  And what best way to get them than by asking the person involved directly.  She saw how his eyes going back and forth to both of her, the one on the bed and the one on the floor, holding his diary.  He’s confused and in shock.  There is no better way to get through a person than when they are in an unbalanced emotion.

Soo Min braced herself, and stood up, waving the pictures in her hand.  Walking directly towards him, as he started to step backwards.

“Stop!  I need answers,” Soo Min hissed, audibly enough even to him.

His eyes went to the pictures, and back at her face.

“Who are you?  Why do you impersonating my sister?”

She laughed at his accusation, “Impersonating?  She is I.  In spirit form.  Because of you.”  Her eyes glared at him as she said the words.

Her brother stopped in his track and stared at her.  There was no longer fear in his eyes but the confusion remained.  His mouth opened but nothing came out.  A step forward was taken cautiously before it followed by the second in a more confidence stride.

“Do not come any further.  I still loath at you for what you did to me.  To our parents.  And I still don’t think of you as my brother.  But I need answers.  Answers in order to get back into my body,” she stated in a stern voice, stopping him from coming nearer to her.

Yu Su Kwan did as he was told.  His eyes never once, leave her.  She saw his apologetic and regretful eyes boring into hers.  ‘If this was a trick, he’s a real good actor.

“What do you need to know Soo Min ah?  The pictures?  Or what really happen 8 years ago?”

“All.”

He nodded.  Walking towards the chair, he turned the chair to face her, the spirited one, before sitting on it.

“Those pictures, I took them.  I took a break from work and came back, for the first time after so long.  Before I came back, I hired someone to get information on you.  That was how I know where you live and your workplace.  I didn’t mean anything harm,” he said, looking down to the floor, “I…I miss my dongsaeng.  Oppa, miss you, Min ah.”

“Hmphh…miss me?  Wae?  Not enough after what you taint my life with?”

“Nothing happened.  It’s the truth.  I had to make it looked real.  For our family sake.  For your safety.  They were going to make you pay for telling our parents and people about what I have been doing for them.”

Her eyes widen.  ‘Was he telling the truth?

“Soo Min ah, when you knew about my drug dealing business at school and you told the teachers and our parents, they were going to kidnap and sell you of to another country as a e.  I can’t have that.  Not to my sister.”

Soo Min shook her head in disbelieve.  She’s still finding it hard to believe a word said by him.

“But, what’s saving me from them was any better than what you did to me?  You drugged me and let your friend have me.  What kind of a brother are you?  You disgusted me!”

He shook his head, “It was an act.  Just to make people believe you are not as what you seemed.  That would make them not believing at what you said about me and the people I work for.  If no one believes you and your credibility as a witness erased, our family will be safe.  You, will be safe.”

He looked her straight in the eye, “I’m sorry I had to do that.  But it was the only choice I had at that time.”

She threw the pictures at him and flopped down on the floor, covering her face, “Our parents hated me because of it.  They were arguing at whose fault it was that I became a as you portrayed me as.  You…you killed our parents.  They were having a fight in the car about me, when the accident occurred.  All this while, I wished I had died along with them.  You.  You took everything away from me.”

The necklace left her neck as she said the final sentence and wished herself back to her apartment instantly.  To be alone.  To cry her tears out.  To sink everything in.
