Embarrassing mothers

The competition

Kyungsoo flitted about in his kitchen, hands working a mile a minute to get everything prepared and ready. He was busily chopping vegetables and adding them to the bubbly brothy mix when his mum walked into the room with a broad grin.

“Do you want me to help you with any of the cooking Kyungie?” She asked with a gentle smile as she reached for the cupcakes that were resting in the tin.

“NOOOOO!” Kyungsoo shrieked, leaping towards his mother and dragging her grabby fingers from the hot tray, fresh from the oven. He got to her just in time, before her finger tips would have been burnt. “Mum that would have burnt you! Plus if you take them out now they might sink. I don’t want the food ruined.” His mum pouted and huffed with a slight stomp on the floor.

“I don’t ruin foo-” She stopped at the raised eye Kyungsoo sent her way. “Fine.” she grumbled. “Then what can I do?” Kyungsoo couldn’t help but smile down at her, sometimes it was like he acted more like the parent then she did. He put his hands on her shoulders and grinned.

“You can just sit at the table and keep me company?” She looked as though she was about to complain until she just sighed and nodded, flopping into one of the mismatching kitchen chairs. Kyungsoo turned back to his vegetables and continued chopping with a smile.

“So, where are you going to take him?” Mrs Do asked, sneaking a cookie from the batch Kyungsoo had baked earlier and quickly stuffing it into her round cheeks before Kyungsoo had time to yell. He frowned at her but couldn’t stop his laugh, she was so weird.

“I haven’t really decided yet.” His fingers worked deftly to wrap his dumpling filling in thin dough before sliding them all into a pot of water beside the bubbling pot of kimchi jjigae. “But I was thinking maybe that place by the river that we used to go to when I was young.”

“Oh, where you would attempt the rope swing every time always end up soaked through?”

“Yes.” Kyungsoo grumbled, still a little embarrassed at the memories. She wasn’t even exaggerating when she said it happened every time, it really did. He suddenly spun around to face the plump woman with a horrified expression. “You won’t tell him, right?” Mrs Do just laughed.

“But you were so cute, all floppy wet hair and pouty lips.” Noticing her son’s expression she held up her hands in surrender. “But I won’t tell. I know how to be a cool mum.” Kyungsoo burst out in a fit of giggles, almost cutting his finger with his sharp knife as his mum jumped up and started dancing to gee while singing out of key. Once he had stopped laughing and his mum had finally stopped laughing and sat down once more Kyungsoo’s gaze flickered back and forth between the boiling pots and his mother.

“Mum, I have to call Kai. The dumplings need to be taken out and I just need to leave the Kimchi Jjigae on a simmer as it’s done. Do you think you can do that and not hurt yourself? I’ll just be five minutes.” Mrs Do huffed and stuck out her tongue.

“You know I did manage okay before you learned to cook, wee one. Go make your call.” She hip bumped him out of the way and set to spooning out the dumplings one by one, her tongue jutting out between her teeth in concentration. “I got this.” Kyungsoo wasn’t sure if she was saying that to him or to encourage herself but either way he sighed and slipped out of the kitchen to make his call. He flopped down onto the sofa in the living room and tapped on Kai’s name in his contacts, bringing his phone to his ear with a goofy smile while he waited for Kai to pick up.

“Hi hyung!” Kai chirped as the ringing stopped.

“Hey.” Kyungsoo suddenly felt his cheeks get all warm as he buried himself deeper into the sofa cushions. “I have a surprise for you. Are you free? Can you come over?” He asked, trying not to giggle and round off the pre-pubescent teenage girl image.

“Sure! I just have to shower so I’ll meet you there in half an hour, okay?”

“Mmm.”

“Okay. Love you, bye.” Kai rushed the last few words before hanging up, Kyungsoo liked to think it was because he was in a hurry to see him. Pushing off of the sofa with a shy smile Kyungsoo made his way back to the kitchen where he saw the most shocking sight that he had ever seen. His mother. In the kitchen. Handling food. No accidents. It was unheard of, she was happily draining the dumpling water, giving the kimchi jjigae a stir, checking that the cupcakes were cool before turning them out onto a wire rack, all while humming.

“Who are you and what have you done with my mother?” Kyungsoo gaped at the smiling woman.

“Kyungsoo I’m not completely useless.” Just as she said those words she flailed her arms about her fingers losing their grip on the, luckily, empty cupcake tray. The tray whacked against the ceiling before falling to the floor with a crash and bending in the middle. They both stood staring at the bent tray for a full minute before their cackles filled the room. Tears streamed from Kyungsoo’s eyes as he bent to pick up the tray and it literally broke in half along the bend.

“Okay.” Mrs Do wheezed out. “I shouldn’t be allowed in a kitchen, I admit it.” She sat down at the table and gestured at the food. “You do it.”

Kyungsoo glanced at his watch. He had twenty five minutes until Kai said he would arrive, that meant that he had thirty five minutes until Kai actually arrived. That should be plenty of time to decorate the cupcakes and pack up all the food. Mrs Do fiddled with the ipod dock and jumped around dancing to various songs as Kyungsoo pushed his sleeves to his elbows and set to work.

Everything was placed immaculately into a cute wicker basket. The basket included the kimchi jjigae, pork and cabbage dumplings, cutely iced cupcakes and a tin of home baked chocolate coated ginger biscuits. There was also a bottle of shloer and a tartan blanket. Kyungsoo heaved the basket off of the table once the lid was closed, his body immediately hunched as he bent his knees and waddled out of the house, the heavy basket making him look somewhat like the hunchback of Notre Dame. He shoved the basked into the boot of his new – old -  car before scurrying back into the house to get changed. He only had five minutes.

He shucked off his sweats and hoodie, opting for a pair of dark denim skinny jeans, a low necked white tshirt and a thick cable knit cardigan. He wanted to be warm after all. He was just sliding on his shoes when there was a knock on the door. He practically ran down the hallway, kicking shoes out of the way before flinging the door wide with a grin. Kai was stood with all of his y glory on the doorstep. He was about to step out of the house when his mum suddenly appeared behind him.

“Before you go, I have something to show you Kai.” Mrs Do said happily, her eyes wide and excited, it reminded Kai so much of the smaller boy.

“But we want to go mum.” Kyungsoo complained. Kai however stepped into the house with a charming smile.

“Of course Mrs Do. What did you want to show me?”

“Such a good boy.” Mrs Do commented proudly, almost as though she was the one who had raised him to have such good manners.

“Kiss .” Kyungsoo mumbled as he shut the door loudly behind him.

“Language Kyungsoo.” His mum scolded.

“Like you don’t say worse mum.” He replied with a raised eyebrow. She coughed awkwardly and just walked away into the kitchen to avoid having to reply to what she knew was the truth. Kyungsoo chuckled evilly before yelping when Kai pinched him on the arm.

“Be nice.” Kai said sternly.

“Wha-?” But Kai was already following Kyungsoo’s mother into the kitchen. Those two got on far too well in Kyungsoo’s opinion. He couldn’t deny that he loved how good his boyfriend and mum’s relationship was, it was only when they ganged up on him that he grumbled about it. At the sounds of Kai’s raucous laughter and Mrs Do’s snorts from the kitchen, Kyungsoo huffed his way in to join them. His jaw dropped to what he saw. There, in Mrs Do’s hands, was a photo of yours truly. Kyungsoo was five in the photo, hair messy yet somehow still plastered to his face with water, his clothes sagging off of his plump body. His tiny hands made fists as he bawled his eyes out, tears undistinguishable from the river water. That, however embarrassing it was, was not the reason for Kyungsoo’s horror. For, there in his boyfriend’s hands was a very similar photo. The only difference between the two was that wet and crying Kyungsoo was five in one photo and fourteen in the other. Fourteen years old and he had cried at falling in the river. His cheeks flushed bright red as the two continued to chuckle.

“Mum! You promised!” Kyungsoo wailed as he snatched the photos away and stuffed them under the fruit bowl on the table.

“I said I wouldn’t tell him. I said nothing about not showing him” She laughed. Kyungsoo pouted and looked down in embarrassment. Kai’s warm arms were soon wrapping around his waist and pulling him in for a hug.

“It’s okay Kyungie….Don’t cry.” At those words Kyungsoo pushed Kai away as the two began to laugh manically once more. Once they had calmed down Kyungsoo scowled at his mum and grabbed Kai’s wrist pulling him down the hall and out of the door.

“Oh boys!” Mrs Do called as Kyungsoo tugged Kai down the path. “Don’t forget to use protection!”

Kyungsoo would have laughed at the way Kai’s cheeks instantly went bright red and his jaw dropped had he not been in the exact same position. Sure, he and his mom were open and talked about everything, but never has she shouted something like that for the world to hear.

“Mum!” Kyungsoo shrieked. Mrs Do just laughed with a knowing smile.

“I was talking about seat belts…what are you talking about Kyungie?” There was a teasing glint in her eye before she started cackling once more and stepping back into the house. Her laughter could still be heard for a minute after the door was closed. It took another minute for the two boys to regain their composure.

“Well that happened.” Kyungsoo said, still wide eyed.

“Yeah…seat belts?” Kai asked, tilting his head off to one side.

“Oh yeah, umm, your surprise is also a celebration.” Kyungsoo said, slipping his hand into Kai’s and walking them down the path to the gate.

“What are we celebrating. I didn’t forget an anniversary or something did I?” Kai asked in panic.

“No, you’re good.” Kyungsoo smiled, squeezing Kai’s hand. He guided Kai along the street a few paces before coming to a stop beside a beaten up old red Renault. “I got my driving licence!” Kyungsoo threw his hands up into the air with a grin. “And this is my baby. She’s called Gloria because she’s glorious.” Kai dove into Kyungsoo’s arms for a hug.

“Well done hyung.” He said into his ear, kissing his neck just below before pulling away and resting his hands on the elder’s shoulders. “I didn’t even know you were learning though.” Kyungsoo felt his stomach flip a little at the cute little pout on his boyfriend’s face.

“Mmm. I didn’t want to tell anybody until I had passed.” Kai nodded in understanding with a proud smile.

“My baby’s all grown up and driving his own car!” Kai grinned.

“Hey.” Kyungsoo whacked Kai’s arm playfully. “I’m older than you . Now get in the car.”

“Ooh, feisty, I like it.” Kai growled with a wink. Kyungsoo his lips slowly for effect, as Kai leaned in for a kiss. When the younger was a mere centimetre from his lips he pulled away and sat down into the driver’s seat. Kai whined like a puppy but hopped into the passenger seat none the less. Kyungsoo grinned and couldn’t help but to lean across and give his boyfriend a sweet kiss before he pulled out and they drove into the night.

Chapter 103: I've been reading this all night and I wasn't logged in then so I'll say this now:
You were ing born to write, stop making excuses and feel more confident in your writing because damn. This was the first Breakfast fic I've read and it's 1000x better than almost every fic I've ever read, and that's saying something. And I've never liked fics where they change POVs between ships but let me just say I'll sell my soul to keep this fic in existence. Be honored because I'm usually too lazy to actually tell authors my thoughts and holy shiet I love this story so fricking much please keep writing if it makes you happy, because you make me so happy when I'm reading this fic.

I've been marathon reading this and I'm loving it so much! Hope to see an update sometime! It would be so sad to see such a good fic go unfinished.

I'll subscribe because this fic sounds wonderful but I'm not going to read it until the author updates or something cuz i have subscriptions that haven't been updated for more than 3 years. I don't need more disappointment and sadness thank you very much even though I'm already kinda disappointed because the description sounds really good.

Well the description of the story seemed great but I'm having second thoughts about reading this fic since the author has not updated this for at least 6 months.. I really don't want cliffhangers when there's little chance of them being updated.. Hope the author comes back..

Chapter 111: Hi^^ I just want to say, I've been reading this for a while now, and I was just really disappointed that you haven't updated in awhile. :( You're okay right? You don't have to update, just wanted to know. You never mentioned anything about a hiatus??? Anyways, great story so far! Can't wait to see where it goes!

This looks so good but I'm not if I should start reading it. It looks like the author might have gone on hiatus. If I really get into it–and I do love baekyeol and long fics— I don't want to be left with a permanent cliffhanger! ???
