Hearts are Made to be Broken
♥ Sunggyu ♥
To be honest, it's not a coincidence how I could meet Eunye at the park. She's right. I actually followed her here secretly after school.
She walked around alone and finally took a seat on the bench, looking at the kids. I leaned to the trunk of tree, watching her from far to make sure that she didn't notice my presence.
When she looked up to the sky, I decided to buy something to drink from the vending machine. I inserted a coin and grabbed the cold green tea can before approaching her.
I put the cold can on her forehead, making her to open her eyes and look at me with confusion. I kept telling myself not to show my nervousness in front of her even when I took a seat next to her.
I have been thinking that maybe I need to talk with Eunye. I don't want to judge or accuse her without knowing the reason she wanted to break Woohyun's heart.
At least I tell myself so.
"Heart to heart...," she scoffs and props her chin on her palm. "When did the last time we actually talked like this?"
Eunye is right. We used to sit side by side like this two years ago, talking about random things. I would love to share my thought about music and she would listen to whatever I was talking about. Sometimes we just talked about movies or college stuff.
How could I forget those short but happy moments?
"I don't hate you," she states, staring blankly to the ground. "I don't think I can hate you. No matter what you've done in the past."
I feel relieved somehow with her statement but I still feel that something is missing. I keep silence, waiting for her to continue again.
"Do you remember the day you gave me your umbrella? It's raining after we studied together at the library," a smile forms on her lips with her eyes still avoiding me. "That's when I start to love white color."
"Well, it's not like you remember it," her smile disappears and she heaves a sigh. "Sometimes I don't understand why I still keep the white umbrella."
My heart skips a beat as I remember the white umbrella she used when she sheltered me after I spied on her and Woohyun. Is that why the umbrella looked familiar for me?
Is that... my umbrella?
"I was waiting for you on your birthday when you came out with Bora," she turns to look at me with unpredictable look. "I cried the whole night just because I remembered that you're with Bora already."
My heart twists when I hear her confession of the past. Does it mean that she actually had a crush on me?
"Starting from that day, I believed that hearts are made to be broken," she mumbles, leaning her back against the chair. "Thanks to you."
Now I know her reason to break Woohyun's heart.
It's because I broke her heart first.

♥ Eunye ♥
I don't want to tell everything to Sunggyu but somehow I know that Hoya is right; I can't avoid him forever and I need to clear the mess that I have made.
Besides it's not like I still have a feeling for Sunggyu, right?
"Eunye...," he murmurs my name with sad eyes. "Look, every guy is not the same. You can't judge all of men are the same just because of me. You don't need to punish the whole world."
"I know," I smile sarcastically. "Lecture me as long as you want. I deserve it."
There are seconds of silence before he asks me a question, "Did I break your heart that bad, Eunye?"
"Maybe not," I retort, fighting back the aching heart of the sad past. "Maybe you didn't. Maybe it's just me who fell in love with someone who didn't see me like how I saw him. Just that."
Love is blind, people said. I guess I was so into Sunggyu that I couldn't see that he didn't see me the way I did.
Silence again.
"Sorry," both of us say in unison.
I blink, surprise with the coincidence and so does he. I let out a small laughter and then smile, "I'm the one to blame about Woohyun. I promise I'll talk to him tomorrow."
"Really?" Sunggyu sounds surprise with my words.
"I broke my own principle of not breaking an innocent's heart anyway. I have responsibilities about it," I shrug. "Otherwise his childhood friend will kill me for sure."
Sunggyu laughs and the atmosphere lightens up. It's been a while since the last time I saw him laugh happily like this.
Maybe if only I was strong enough to face my broken heart, I would never have this complicated problem from the start.
If only I had a forgiving heart, maybe I would still be friends with him, just like how Hoya and I are doing now.
"I'm going back now," I straighten my body and stand up. I turn around to face him as I offer my hand for a shake, "Friends?"
Sunggyu looks at my hand, blinking for seconds before he takes my right hand with his left hand. Instead of shaking my hand, he intertwines his fingers with mine and starts to walk away from the park.
"Y-Yah!" I try to pull my hand away from him but he doesn't let me go. "Handshake! Handshake! Not-"
"I'll walk you back," he cuts my sentence quickly, still holding my hand tight but gentle. "It's my apology for my mistake in the past, if you let me to do it."
I can feel heat creeps to my cheeks. I stop struggling and he slows down his pace until both of us walk side by side.
Things are going to be better if I forgive him and he forgives me, right?

♥ Hoya ♥
I part my way with Woohyun after we talked about our opinions of teaching in Eungeum Art School, about our passion in music, and about Eunye.
He asked some simple questions about Eunye like whether she has siblings or not, how I met her, what her favorite color is, and more random questions.
Sometimes I thought he was going to ask me an important question but he stopped and changed the topic all of a sudden. Being the person who respects others' privacy, I chose to shut my mouth from asking him.
When I walk pass a small park near my apartment, I stop immediately when I see two kids are throwing stones at a dog. The dog whimpers but the kids keep hurting it.
Before I could stop them, someone runs pass me and shouts, "Stop! Yah! Stop! The little dog is hurting!"
Both of the little kids runaway immediately, afraid of being scolded by the girl who has black wavy hair. She kneels down and mumbles sadly, "How can they be so mean?"
I stand still on my feet and observe the girl who brings a small pink trunk with her. She notices that someone is looking at her and she turns around to look at me.
Now I'm sure that I know her, "Bora Noona?"
"Howon?" she speaks out my name and her face beams. She stands up and walks to me. "Lee Howon? Oh my! It's been two years since the last time we saw each other!"
Yoon Bora is my senior in college and I know that she is Sunggyu's girlfriend. Basically saying, she is the one who won Sunggyu's heart from Eunye.
"That's very caring of you," I compliment her sincerely, glancing at the dog which is slowly walking away from us, hiding at somewhere else. "You're faster than me."
She chuckles and smiles beautifully, "I just walked pass this area to find my new apartment and I saw the scene so..."
I nod and then ask her politely, "You're moving into a new apartment?"
"Ah, yes," she takes out her phone and shows me the address. "Here. Any case you know where it is?"
My eyes widen in surprise and I laugh, "Yes. In fact, I also live in this apartment building."
"Really?!" she clasps her hands with bright smile. "what a coincidence!"
I return her phone and tuck my hands inside of my pockets and offer her to show the way to the apartment. She gladly accepts my offer and we walk together.
Bora tells me that she just moved out from her house to try living by herself. She asks me where I am working right now after she told me that she's working as a fashion advisor for a magazine.
"Oh, Sunggyu Hyung also works at Eungeum with me," I add, trying to continue the conversation. "Have you ever visited him yet?"
Her face suddenly darkens but then she forces a smile and mutters, "I... We broke up already, Howon."
"Eh?" I can't hide my shock after hearing the news. I thought they're still in a relationship until this moment.
Come to think of it, I never talked about their relationship with Sunggyu anyway. It's just I thought they would last longer than just a year or so.
"Let's not talk about it," she tries to shove away the awkward silence. "What about you? I'm sure you have a girlfriend now!"
"No, I don't," I answer her while I check my phone because there is a new text message.
Choi Eunye
"I've talked with Sunggyu Oppa."
I smile at the short text message. It's a good news. I reply the message as fast as possible.
"Good. I have something to tell you too tomorrow."
I put my phone back into my pocket and resume the conversation I have with Bora.
I've talked with Woohyun. Eunye has talked with Sunggyu. Everything is actually better now, isn't it?
I hope this peaceful moment is not just a temporary one.
