Three
Five Makes A Family“I’m back!” Baekhyun shuts the door with his foot, hands full with bags. “Aish, these are heavy.”
He hears clanging coming from the kitchen and shuffles to it, still struggling with the bags and muttering about how unhelpful the other two are being.
He pauses in the doorway, almost dropping the groceries.
“Oh hey Baekie.” Chanyeol smiles up at him from where he’s sitting on the floor, surrounded by pots and pans.
Taehyung’s next to him and Baekhyun seems to have interrupted their little music-making session.
“Hi umma! Did you get any chocolate?”
Baekhyun blinks at his son’s wide grin. He leaves an hour, a mere hour, and what happens? Their kitchenware was turned into instruments! What is he supposed to do now?
But seeing how happy his husband and son are, he decides to shrug it off-for now. He doesn’t want to ruin their fun, especially since he kind of wants to join it too.
“Baekhyun?” Chanyeol’s voice is sheepish, expecting some sort of a scolding from the other. After all, they had put the pots and pans away earlier today, just to get them back out soon after.
“You don’t have to stop,” Baekhyun finally says. “Just help me put away the groceries, okay?”
Taehyung scrambles up and tries to look in the bags. “Did you get chocolate?”
“If you help me put them away, you’ll find out,” Baekhyun tells him, setting some bags on the counter. Taehyung starts to unpack immediately, eager to see if there’s chocolate.
Chanyeol wraps his arms around Baekhyun from behind. “How was the store?”
“The usual. How was home?”
“The usual.”
“I leave for an hour. For one hour and you-”
Chanyeol interrupts him with a kiss, knowing the elder isn’t actually that mad. How could he be? Chanyeol will give him his puppy-dog eyes and Baekhyun’s a goner.
“Umma! Appa! Why aren’t you helping me?” Taehyung pouts as he two break apart, Chanyeol grinning widely.
“I’m seeing if you can find the chocolate,” Baekhyun says, smacking his husband lightly on the arm. “It’s a fun game.”
Taehyung beams. “So you did get chocolate!” His parents laugh as he fishes through the bags, still intent on finding the treat.
“So are we going over to Jongdae’s tomorrow?” Baekhyun asks, starting to help Taehyung put the food away. “I haven’t responded yet since I know you might get off work late.”
“I think I can leave early actually,” answers Chanyeol, reaching into one of the bags excitedly. “You did get cucumbers! But yeah, I can make it. I’ll pick up Tae from school too.”
Baekhyun rolls his eyes at Chanyeol but smiles anyhow. “That’d be great. I’ll see if I can get Kyungsoo to cover for me but I doubt it. He’s probably going though, if Jongin doesn’t have a competition.”
“He doesn’t. He already told me he’s free this weekend.”
“I found it!” Taehyung announces excitedly, triumphantly pulling out a candy bar from the now-abandoned bag. He starts to wave it around in the air, dancing in the middle of the kitchen.
“Is that for me?” Chanyeol steals it from him, loudly laughing as Taehyun starts to chase him around the kitchen.
“Yah! Appa that’s mine! Yah!” Taehyung tries to jump and get it back but Chanyeol’s too tall and merely holds it above his head.
“Umma, he’s being mean!”
“Give it back Chanyeol,” Baekhyun says sternly. “Honestly, you are such a child.”
Chanyeol just grins, handing it back to Taehyung who accepts it happily. “Well you didn’t get me anything.”
“It’s like I’m taking care of two kids,” Baekhyun mutters under his breath.
“Don’t worry, I’ll share it with you appa,” Taehyung says, grinning as Chanyeol pats him on the head.
“That’s okay, you can have it.”
“Now?”
“You’re not having chocolate before dinner,” says Baekhyun, catching the mischievous glint in Taehyung’s eye as he turns around, putting a gallon of milk in the fridge.
“But umma,” whines the child. “Can I have a bite? A little bite? Please?”
He got his puppy-dog whining from Chanyeol too, thinks Baekhyun, rolling his eyes but smiling nonetheless. “Just one bite. A small bite. It can’t spoil your dinner.”
“Don’t worry!” Taehyung had cut him off almost before he was done talking. “It won’t!”
“Watch him.” Baekhyun juts his chin at Taehyung as the child scampers to the table and happily begins to unwrap the candy bar.
“He’ll be fine.” Chanyeol hugs his petit husband from behind, burying his face in Baekhyun’s hair. “Let him have it.”
“But his dinner-”
“What about my dinner? Or more specifically, desert?” Chanyeol can practically feel Baekhyun’s face burning as he laughs his booming laugh, ignoring Baekhyun’s half-hearted jab to his ribs.
“Now isn’t the time,” he mutters, eyes darting over to Taehyung who has taken a bite of the candy and is now watching birds out the window with fascination.
“Well what about tonight?”
“Honestly, you’re such a child,” hisses Baekhyun, yet his smile gives him away. “I hope Taehyung doesn’t get your lack of self-control.”
It’s so weird for him to say that. Get. Inherit. Taehyung getting both of their traits because he’s their child. It’s such a weird but amazing feeling and Baekhyun wouldn’t trade it for anything.
“Umma!” Taehyung turns to look at them through orange bangs, his eyes sheepish “I accidentally had two bites.”
“Lack of self-control indeed,” laughs Chanyeol.
Baekhyun sighs. “Nevermind.”
