Twenty-Six
Five Makes A FamilyTaehyung shifts slightly and Bambam whacks him in the shoulder, making him wince. “What was that for?”
“Don’t move hyung, you’re ruining my focus.”
The elder pouts but obeys Bambam and tries to stay still as he carefully styles his hair.
“I think Jin hyung was right with this hairstyle,” he comments and Taehyung just hums in agreement, not wanting to move his head.
Seokjin had come by earlier, helping Taehyung get ready. They had already been shopping for suits (Seokjin had insisted on picking them out and Taehyung just let him) and he had instructed both Taehyung and Bambam on how to apply makeup and style his hair before leaving. He had to get himself ready, after all.
“There. Perfect.”
Taehyung takes a peek in the mirror. His hair is pushed off his forehead and it doesn’t look like he’s trying too hard, even though Bambam’s been working for almost forty-five minutes.
“Wow Bambam, it looks great!”
“Jungkook should think so as well.”
“Do you think so?” Taehyung bites his lip in worry but Bambam pats him reassuringly.
“Of course hyung. You should see the way he looks at you.”
Before Taehyung can respond, Baekhyun pokes his head into the bathroom. “Oh Tae, you look so handsome.”
“Thanks umma.” Taehyung smiles sheepishly at his mother bustling around. He had told Seokjin he would be doing Taehyung’s makeup and Seokjin was only too happy to comply,
“Keep your eyes open Tae,” coaches Baekhyun, carefully applying eyeliner. Taehyung tries not to blink but it’s hard. How can his umma do this every day?
“That looks awkward,” says Bambam, watching the process with amusement. Taehyung sticks his tongue out but is still.
Finished with the eyeliner, Baekhyun starts to rim his eldest son’s eyes with kohl lightly, making his eyes seem even bigger.
“I can’t believe my Tae’s going to prom,” Baekhyun says, moving on to Taehyung’s lips next. “How are you so old already?”
“I’m not-”
“Don’t talk,” interrupts his mom and Taehyung doesn’t but he just raises his eyebrows instead as Baekhyun applies lip gloss on him.
“Well, my work here is done,” he declares, capping the gloss. “Jungkook’s going to be here soon, so get your suit on. Tae, going to prom. I can’t believe it.”
He leaves the room, still mumbling to himself. Taehyung scrambles to look in the mirror but Bambam pulls him away.
“I want to see how I look!” the elder pouts but Bambam just drags him to his room.
“Not until you put on your suit. Then you have to see the finished product.”
“You make me sound like a toy.”
“Just put it on.”
Taehyung sighs but starts to pull it on carefully, making sure not to wrinkle any of it. It’s very simple, black pants with a jacket and pressed white shirt, a black bowtie knotted around his throat.
Jungkook had insisted on getting the boutonniere and picking him up- but they’re all taking a limo anyway, because Jimin’s mom knew someone who could hook them up with one.
“Hey Tae, I got you a new...pair…” Baekhyun pauses in the doorway, seeing his eldest struggling with his bowtie. “Let me do that.”
“Thanks.” Taehyung had gotten it twisted around his fingers and Baekhyun sighs, straightening it out and smoothing his shirt.
Taking a step back, Baekhyun smiles widely but there’s a tinge of sadness in it. “Oh Taehyung, you look wonderful.”
“Really?” Taehyung starts towards the bathroom, Baekhyun following and Bambam and Sungoh joining them, having been hovering outside his brother’s door.
“Wow hyung, you look great!” Bambam exclaims and Sungoh nods, having been getting ready himself and now that he’s done, wanting to see his younger brother.
Taehyung stares in the mirror. He almost doesn’t recognize himself. The guy in the mirror isn’t the usual Taehyung, in plain jeans and messy hair.
No, the guy in the mirror is sophisticated and put-together, the suit hugging him in all the right places. He makes a mental note to thank Seokjin later.
“I look...nice,” he finally manages to say.
“Nice? You look hot!” exclaims Bambam his eyes wide with almost childlike wonder.
“Jungkook will totally want to do that,” adds Sungoh and Taehyung fully expects his umma to scold him for language but he doesn’t.
“So grown-up,” says Baekhyun, his eyes feeling a little moist. “I’m too young to have a kid going to prom!”
“I’m going to prom too,” points out Sungoh and as great as Taehyung feels, he can’t help but think compared to his elder brother he’s not as good-looking in a suit.
“He looks like you, umma,” Bambam points out. “Like, really looks like you. It’s the eyeliner. You should wear it more often.”
“God no,” scoffs Taehyung. “It’s too much and too hard. I don’t have time for it everyday.”
“Taehyung!” calls Chanyeol from downstairs. “Jungkook’s here!”
They all freeze, looking at each other with deer-in-the-headlights expression.
Taehyung feels anxiety bubble up in his chest. “Crap.”
Because my prom is next week and we all need a little more Taekook in our lives.
