From Fact to Fiction
Jiyeon’s POV
Something heavy was on me. I felt weird. Slowly, I opened my eyes as I looked around. The white ceiling and the medical equipment made me realize I was in the hospital. I looked to my right and Junhyung’s head was lying against the bed sheets nearby me asleep. His face seemed like he’s been stressed lately. How long have I even been here? My legs felt numb and before I knew it, I couldn’t feel them no more. I wanted to move. I wanted to get up.
I tried to get up slowly but was stopped when I realized something was holding onto me. Junhyung was holding my right hand. I felt his touch. His warmth. I smiled filled with hope as I got back into bed but moments later, he woke up.
“You’re awake?” he asked as he touched my forehead.
“I’m fine… really”
Junhyung’s facial expression changed dramatically. He stood up and stared at me in anger.
“Why didn’t you tell me you were sick even before this happened? You could have been really hurt!”
My lips formed a small curve, “Did you worry about me?”
“Are you kidding me Jiyeon?”
“No… I just haven’t heard you yell at me for a long time. I miss it…”
“What am I going to do with you?” sighed Junhyung as he sat back onto his chair.
I waited for him to speak to break the long awkward silence but he just stared at me. I couldn’t hold it any longer. Was our relationship back to the way it was before? Was the ‘fight’ over now? I played with my fingers as decided to think about how to ask him.
“Junhyung…”
“Are we okay now? Is my brother back now?”
“Yeahh” he said after much thought.
“I was hurt when you said you wanted me to leave. I was hurt when you said you didn’t want to see me. I was hurt when you decided to move out without even consulting me… I was… I was..” I explained when I couldn’t hold my tears any longer.
Junhyung patted me on the head as he consoled me. I pulled him closer to me only to have his body stiffen. This wasn’t new to him but why does my touch make him so stiff? I wondered how come he became… just so… different.
“I’m sorry. Your brother has been a terrible brother. I haven’t been by your side this entire time. I had you suffer. I’m sorry”
“But.. you never told me why you did it”
“I’ll tell you later when the time is right. Now go back to sleep, it’s already midnight”
Junhyung pulled the covers over me and brushed my hair aside. He touched my forehead again as it has become a usual routine of his now. I grabbed his hand quickly, scaring him with the sudden gesture.
“You’re going to stay right?”
He nodded as he placed my hand under the blankets.
The next morning I was able to come home. I had already been in the hospital for a entire week. The hospital atmosphere was not to my liking. I wasn’t allowed to do this or that. I couldn’t wait to go home. I changed into a white flared dress and pulled over the blue thick cardigan over my shoulders. I pulled my hair back into a messy bun without difficulty. I came out of the bathroom to find Junhyung had already packed all my things into the luggage. He stared at me in disapproval.
“Why are you wearing a dress in the winter?”
“It’s comfortable” I mumbled to myself.
“Here wear my jacket over your sweater” he said as he tossed me his leather jacket.
We walked toward the exit of the hospital when I saw Hyunseung walking through the doors. I stopped as I waved to him. He smiled at me as he approached.
“Hyunseung! What are you doing here?”
“I came here to check up on you. Are you discharged today?”
“Yeah Junhyung is driving me home”
“Oh I see. Are you feeling okay? Are you hurt anywhere?”
“Aha I’m fine”
“That’s a relief” he sighed as he pulled me into a hug.
His hug felt different. It felt like he has been burdened lately with a lot of stress. He seemed tired and out of energy. I patted his back lightly as he held me. He didn’t’ let go and for
