Late in the Afternoon

Inside Key’s Room

“Mom is it alright if we take our dinner up inside my room
since I am the only constructed with a balcony…
(looks at Tiffany) By the way, I really wanted to ask you
about it after touring the entire house and rooms…”

“(smiling) I thought you never asked that…”

“Why Auntie…I noticed it too…”

“hhhmm…
It was suggested by your late Dad…
He was the one who first saw your potential
when you were just one year and two months if I am not mistaken.
Your Dad saw you holding his pencil trying
to create lines on his huge notebook.
He was so taken aback that he decided
to watch instead of stopping you.
After like several minutes,
he was so amazed when you draw according to him
which I never saw cause he said you kept it...
embarrassed to show it – a blend of nature
and geometrical shape sketch…
And that instant, he decided a balcony
to be constructed attached to your room…”

“Mom…
do you still have my sketches when I was a kid…?”

Tiffany sits on the chair feeling like she was about to cry but pinches her left thigh to counteract the sudden rush of various poignant emotions creeping to her veins that mechanically her body reacts when she gulps and chokes on her own liquid.
Key instantly notices his mother sudden change of demeanor that he asks accordingly…

“Mom… are you alright…?”

“(gulps again) I am alright…hon…
(grabs her chest) hhmmm…
about your painting…
I am really so sorry but I used to keep it for you
until one time you asked all of them from me
so you could keep it yourself…
they were really nice paintings…
from your toddler period…”

Taemin turns to Key bewildered by the whole conversation that he could not prevent himself asking questions…

“Key…if you do not mind my asking…
it puzzles me that you do not remember anything
about your childhood life here in Korea…
(looks at Tiffany) Auntie…
why does Key cannot remember any…?”

But before Tiffany could answer, Key interjects…

“Perhaps in time… I will remember…
it’s all vagueness in me or shall I say
blankness not a thing I can remember…
let’s just drop the issue if both of you do not mind…
(looks at his mother) Mom…
we will all have to take dinner at the balcony…ok…
(walking to the intercom) …”

As Key is busy taking charge of the situation, Tiffany and Taemin discreetly look at each other having a quiet understanding of what is going on with Key and at the same time nod and agree again to discontinue the discussion…

”Mr. Kris… Mr. Kris…
can you ask Ms. Gain to cook Fungi Pasta,
Garlic Bread, Buttered Chicken, Chili Prawns,
Pineapple fruit and Fresh Juice…
and bring them all at the balcony where Mom,
Taemin and I will have our dinner…
and ask Mr. Tao to arrange necessary table, chairs, etc…asap…”

“Yes… Sir Key…I will ask Tao…”

“Thank you very much…
(looks back at his mother)
Mom… come…
Taemin and I will go to my room…?”

“I need to finish something… have fun…
and call me when it is dinner time… ok…?”

“Okay Mom…
(puts his hand around Taemin’s shoulder)
Let’s go Taemin…”

Tiffany watches as Key and Taemin walk cheerfully chatting with each other.
She raises both of her hands on to her face and makes a quick harried wipe on her face feeling guilty that she almost lost herself a moment ago.
It was a good thing that she was able to pull herself together swiftly.

Taemin coming deciding to be with Key is a breath of relief for Tiffany.
She never expected for her husband’s brother to allow Taemin to live with them but somehow had a feeling that the latter will chase on Key no matter what. 

“Mommy…!!”

“(shocked) Hah….why…Honey…
what’s wrong…?”
Tiffany absentmindedly responds…
