It was almost ten years ago, or maybe eleven years ago. He really couldn’t remember. He was bad at remembering dates. But he remembered his mother, suddenly. She was so much fun for the six year old Minho. He loved her, he loved her, and he loved her. He remembered that. He remembered her warmth. He remembered her love for him.

He remembered how tightly she’d hold him, leading him through the parks.

“Don’t go there, my little Minho, you might fall.”

                “My baby, did you hurt yourself? Mummy will kiss you better”

                “Min-min, let’s build this. Papa will be so excited when he comes home!”

                And he remembered that she had been kind. He remembered she loved him.

                Did his father ever love him? He probably did, but Minho didn’t really remember. He was too young. He remembered his mother. His mother. Not his father. Never his father.

                Why couldn’t he remember his father before that day? It seemed like maybe he was never there. Maybe Minho only remembered him because of that day.

                He never wanted to think about the day he lost his mother. There wasn’t a funeral for her. He just remembered his father, holding him on the shoulders, looking into his eyes.

                He only remembered those words he never wanted to hear.

                He only remembered…

                “Son… Minho… your mother is gone.”

                He remembered that day because he lost his love. For almost three years, he wouldn’t feel love. He wouldn’t feel love until Minki was born. He loved the baby so much, he almost wished it was his.

                And he remembered. He remembered the day when Minki was four years old. Thirteen year old Minho was watching television with him when he was suddenly compelled to ask Minki if he loved him.

                “Minki-ya, do you love hyung?”

                “No,” the baby replied quickly, unaware of how much he’d just hurt his brother.

                “Do you like hyung?”

                “I like hyung 3%!”

                Why didn’t anyone love Minho?

                What did he do wrong?

                Minho awoke with a start, his heart aching. Since when did he think about his mother? Wasn’t that ten years ago? Why was she in his memory now? Shaking his head, he looked around, not recognising his surroundings.

                Then he remembered. (It seems he’d been doing that a lot lately). He was at sweet Onew’s place. Onew’s soft couch. Onew’s good food in his stomach. Onew’s warm blanket covering him. Onew, Onew, Onew. Why was he thinking of his mother? Why was Onew so nice to him?

                Coincidentally, Onew walked by, carrying a glass of cool water. Minho realised how thirsty he was then.

                “Minho,” Onew began, his voice soothing Minho immediately. “Did you sleep well?” He gave Minho the cold water that was obviously meant for himself.

                He gulped it down quickly, shivering at how perfect it tasted. “Slept well, hyung”

                “That’s great.” Onew smiled. Minho smiled back automatically. Minho felt warm and fuzzy inside. Onew ruffled Minho’s hair.  Minho could trust Onew.

                “Hyung,” he began. “Can I tell you something?”

                “Anything, Minho-gun” Onew placed a hand softly on his bruised shoulder.

                “Please don’t tell anyone,” Minho took a deep breath, his lip quivering. “I have a secret…”
