Love in Disguise

Jessica couldn’t believe her eyes.  In front of her was the man that had broke her heart so long ago.  Why was he here at her door?  Was he seeking forgiveness?  What was up with him?  Jessica held a tighter grip on the doorknob as Jaebeom gave a shy, but kind smile.  Her first love was back.

It took all of her willpower to hold back the tears that wanted to escape from her eyes.  She had never thought that she would ever see him again.  He looked even better than before.  His chest was broader, and he seemed a bit taller, but he still had the same smile that Jessica had fallen for.  Jessica’s jaw unclenched as she decided to say the first word.

“What are you doing here?” she growled.

Jaebeom knew that she was angry with him.  She was the type that would keep so much anger in her even if the years passed by.  He nervously swallowed and took a deep breath.

“Jess, I want to talk things through with you,” he said.

Jessica said in a monotone, “Please call me Jessica.”

He frowned knowing that he couldn’t even call her by the nickname he usually addressed her with.  She was cold before, but she seemed even more hostile now.

“Jessica, can I please go inside.  I would like to speak to you,” he requested.

Jessica reluctantly let go of the doorknob.  Her jaw tightened as she opened the door wider and signaled for him to go inside.  She was not expecting this.  She wasn’t anticipating on seeing him again in her life.

After their awkward introduction to each other, Jessica found herself pouring tea into a mug for him.  Her face remained to be unchanged.  She was still in shock that he was in her dorm.  She exited the small kitchen and entered the living room in which Jaebeom was sitting in.  She presented the cup of tea in front of him and sat across from him.  She crossed her legs and the frown remained on her face.

“Thank you for the tea,” he bowed his head.

                  “You’re welcome,” Jessica uttered flatly.

Jaebeom spoke, “Uh, I know that you really don’t want me to be here.  I just wanted to apologize to you for what I did in New York.  I know that I’m a jerk.”

“Yeah, you are,” Jessica agreed, “Who the hell dates another woman when he’s engaged?  You made me feel like a second-hand woman.”

Jaebeom nodded with regret in his heart.  He knew he did wrong.  He did his fiancé wrong, and he did Jessica wrong.  He said words that he wanted to take back.

“I know my faults,” Jaebeom told her, “I know that I did you wrong the most.  I made you believe that I loved you—actually, I still do love you, but I know that things are different.”

Jessica’s eyes widened, “Don’t tell me you love me.  You already told me that you didn’t in New York.  You can’t take back your words and then spit them out again.  I’m not that gullible!”

He completely understood her.  He felt heat radiating through his body to see Jessica so worked up.  He felt guilty for what he did to her.  He unwrapped his scarf around his neck and set it down next to him on the couch.  He nervously swallowed again as he took the teacup and took a sip.  He set it down and tried to clear his mind of his worries.

“I know that it sounds stupid, but I realized how much I love you after you left me,” Jaebeom declared.

“Shut up,” Jessica rolled her eyes, “You’re a married man.”

Jaebeom shook his head, “No, I canceled the wedding after what I did to you.  I couldn’t do it.  After that, I began to regret ever doing you wrong.  After I finished medical school, I joined a religious group that helped the poor in several countries.  I worked in Uganda, Ethiopia, and Angola.  I was waiting for my group to travel to Asia so that I could see you again.  I recently discovered that I was too late.”

Jessica guessed that he found out that she was with Jiyong now.  Jessica breathed out.  She had transformed and changed so much from back then.  Before, she was so hateful and bitter, but Jiyong made her want to become a great person.

“You’re with Jiyong now, and I respect that,” he muttered, “I just want your forgiveness.  I also want to be your friend.  I’m not asking for anything else.  I don’t want anything else.  I just want your friendship.”

“How do I know that you won’t do something that will hurt me?” Jessica finally asked.

“You’ll have to trust me,” Jaebeom insisted, “I won’t do anything to hurt you.  I just want to be your friend.”

Yoochun was actually surprised that Yoona had asked him to have a meal with her.  Yoona’s class for the afternoon was cancelled, so she guessed that it was a convenient time.  Seunghyun was in his class, and he wouldn’t have a clue that she had met up with Yoochun.

Yoona waited in a Korean barbeque restaurant as she sat in her seat while she read over the menu.  She put down her menu after she saw Yoochun with two tall men following him.  Yoochun raised his hand up and the two men dispersed and gave him space.  Yoona stood up and bowed to him.  Yoochun bowed back, and was even surprised himself.  He rarely bowed back to people.  He always figured that because he was superior, he didn’t need to bow to others.

“Yoona sshi, you look lovely,” he smiled at her as he took his seat across from her.

Yoona looked at her outfit.  She was wearing a regular t-shirt and a pair of her favorite jeans.  She didn’t know why he was complimenting her that she looked nice.  She looked like a regular college student in her eyes.

“Thank you, Yoochun sshi,” Yoona replied, “You look great, too.”

He couldn’t help but laugh at her statement.  People usually described him to be clean and proper as a compliment.  Yoona intrigued him.  She was one of the few women that weren’t intimidated by him.  Other than his sister, mother, and a few of his close friends and cousins, no one was as valiant as Yoona in speaking to him.

They ordered their food, and their meals were in front of them within a few minutes.  Yoona looked around the restaurant warily to check if anyone was taking pictures of them.  Yoochun couldn’t help but chuckle.  She was intelligent.  She was always thinking about the consequences to everything.

“I can take it that Seunghyun doesn’t know you’re here,” Yoochun guessed, “Don’t worry, my dear.  I had my bodyguards check the premises for cameras and photographers.  If the restaurant and its staff takes pictures of us both and release it to the public, I’ll sue and shut this place down.  They know it, so they won’t do anything.”

Yoona nodded, “You’re make good observations.  Yoochun sshi, I would like to get to the point.”

“You can start questioning me now,” Yoochun grinned as he began to eat his rice.

Yoona hesitated a bit. What if his past was too dark for her to handle?  She took a deep breath and folded her hands together.  This needed to be done.  If Seunghyun wasn’t going to tell her what was wrong, then she had to figure it out herself.

“What’s your relationship with Seunghyun?” Yoona interrogated.

Yoochun explained, “Well, we first met each other in junior high.  We were from different schools, and when my school’s basketball team went against his, our rivalry started.  He’s taller than me by a little, and he was really good at dunking the ball.  I grew jealous, and I was a bit mean to him.  I for being chubby.”

“He was chubby in the past?” Yoona’s jaw dropped.

Her boyfriend was the perfect Adonis.  His body was toned, and he had a good height.  It was hard to believe that he was heavy in his earlier days.

“Yeah, his cousin, Chaerin, used to make fun of him and they always called him Tubby.  I used to be jealous because even when he was chubby, he was better at me in basketball,” Yoochun sighed.

That was something new that Yoona had finally learned about Seunghyun.  He had his chubby days.  Yoona couldn’t help but think that it was too cute.  That was why Seunghyun hardly talked about his childhood.  He was just too embarrassed.

“I didn’t know that,” Yoona murmured.

“I’m not surprised,” Yoochun took another bite into his meat, “That’s not something you can actually brag about.”

Yoona changed the subject, “Yoochun sshi, can you please tell me about Seunghyun’s first love?”

“I don’t remember her name, but I remember that she was extremely beautiful.  Her hair was really long, she had a sweet voice, and she had the palest skin ever.  I heard that one of the people in his clique fell for her, too, and the two men fought to no end.  I think Seunghyun stole her away,” Yoochun revealed, “I don’t remember which person he fought with.”

Seunghyun fought with someone from his group of friends over a woman?  That was unbelievable!   Who could it be?  It was either Daesung, Geun Suk, Seungri, Young Bae, or Jiyong.  Her first guess was that it was Jiyong or Daesung.  She just had a feeling that it was one of them.

“What happened to her?” Yoona asked.

Yoochun shrugged his shoulders, “I honestly don’t know.  I heard from gossip that she ran away.  Others say that she’s still in Seoul, but who knows?  There are rumors that she wrote letters to the both of them.  I heard that she wrote in Seunghyun’s letter that she was truly in love with the other man.  He was heartbroken, and I guess that’s why he turned into a sickening womanizer—well until you came along, Ms. Yoona.  You have tamed the beast in him.”

Jiyong saw Jessica walking towards the door to her dorm.  He wanted to surprise her.  He knew that she was angry with him because he knew that Dara was going to be at the party, and he didn’t inform her.  She was embarrassed because she looked so clueless and naïve.

He crept slowly behind her and hugged her from the back.  Jessica, on the other hand, was completely paranoid after what had happened to her a few days ago.  Ever since that woman approached her warning her about Jiyong, she grew very cautious of her surroundings.

She stepped on his foot and turned around in a swift motion.  She was about to push him away until she saw who it was.  Jiyong looked extremely terrified to see her so worked up.  She was about to check if he was okay, but then she remembered that she was mad at him.  She turned around and unlocked her door with her key.

“Baby, are you still mad at me?” Jiyong frowned as he followed her in.

Jessica frowned, “What do you think?”

He gently grabbed her wrist and took her hand into his.  He began to kiss her knuckles again and again.  He then let go of her hand and wrapped his arms around her and kissed the top of her head.

“I’m sorry,” he apologized, “I should have told you that she was there.”

“She’s…she’s beautiful.  She’s just perfect!  How can you not tell me about her?” Jessica exclaimed.

Jiyong replied, “Well, I don’t think talking about my ex-girlfriend is something that I would prioritize in telling you about.”

Jessica crossed her arms and frowned at him.  She felt like a fool in the party because she was sitting with Jiyong’s ex the whole time and she had no clue.

Jiyong sat down on the sofa and took a deep breath.  There was no way that he could make her budge.  She was just too hardheaded.  He looked to his side and saw a black scarf next to him.  He raised an eyebrow as he took it into his hands while Jessica continued to nag at him.  He knew that it wasn’t Jessica’s scarf.  It was a scarf for men.  He knew it was for men because he recognized it from the 2010 winter catalogue for Calvin Klein for men.

“Babe, whose scarf is this?” he held it out.

Jessica cursed under her breath and then let out a grunt.  How could Jaebeom forget his scarf on the couch?  She immediately knew that an argument was going to break out between Jiyong and her.

Jiyong unfolded the scarf and saw Jaebeom’s name on the tag.  He felt like an erupting volcano.  He threw the scarf on the floor and then ran both of his hands through his hair with frustration.  Jessica took a step back to see how outraged he was.  She had never seen him like this.

He daringly pointed a finger at her, “Why was he here?”

“He just came to talk,” Jessica quickly responded.

“How come you didn’t tell me?” Jiyong yelled, “Are you hiding him from me?  Is he here right now?  Did something happen between you two?  Tell me!”

Jessica shook her head and tried to calm him down.  She set her hand on his shoulder, but he brushed it away quickly.  Because she wasn’t answering his questions right away, he expected the worst.

“Are you cheating on me?” Jiyong’s eyes widened.

“No, of course not!” Jessica assured him.

Jiyong fired back, “Then why was he here?  Tell me!”

She didn’t know how to react to his rage.  She had never seen him like this.  He was usually calm and peaceful, but when he was angry, he was ruthless.  Jessica forced an embrace on him even though he tried to push her away.  She tightly wrapped her arms around his waist as her cheek rested on his chest.

“He wanted my forgiveness,” she said as she pulled away.

He shook his head, “That’s complete bull.  That is after something else.”

Jessica finally had enough, “Why can’t you just believe that he wants to be forgiven?”

“Because he’s an !” Jiyong argued back.

Jiyong knew that he was going to do something that he was going to regret.  He left her dorm without even saying goodbye.  As he made his way out, Jessica followed him eagerly.

“Where are you going?” Jessica asked.

He didn’t make a simple reply and continued to walk out.  When he walked out of the dorm, she slammed the door loudly and screamed out in frustration.  Tears began to stream out of her eyes as she sat down on the floor.  She hated fighting with him.

“What do you want to do when you get older?” Yoona asked Hyeri.

Hyeri gave a luminous smile as she began to think of what to say.  Yoona had been seeing her for a couple of hours about four times a week.  It was safe to say that the two were getting closer to each other every single time they saw each other.

“I want to be a pianist,” Hyeri answered.

Yoona inspired Hyeri when she saw Yoona playing the piano for her.  Yoona had already begun to teach her a few basic songs.

Hyeri tugged on Yoona’s sleeve as Yoona gave her full attention to the child.  The little girl pointed out her finger and Yoona’s eyes followed the direction Hyeri’s finger was pointing at.  Yoona saw Seunghyun with a bag in his hand.  Yoona tilted her head and made a guess that Seunghyun had a gift for Hyeri.

“Unnie, isn’t that your prince charming?” Hyeri smiled.

Seunghyun watched the little girl next to Yoona.  She was the girl that Yoona wouldn’t shut up about.  Hyeri had her hair split into two braids.  She was wearing a jumpsuit with a pair of sneakers.  Her rosy cheeks contrasted against her pale white skin.

Yoona simply nodded, which surprised Seunghyun.  He was her prince charming?  He didn’t expect her to agree to it.

“Let’s go say hi to him,” Yoona whispered.

Hyeri grabbed Yoona’s hand and they walked towards Seunghyun together.  Yoona didn’t expect Seunghyun to even show up to Hyeri’s school.  He just wasn’t the type that would ever be interested in children.

                  “Hello,” Hyeri bowed.

“It’s a pleasure to meet you,” Seunghyun greeted in his deep voice.

His voice caught Hyeri off guard.  She seemed to be frightened by his voice.  She scurried behind Yoona and hugged her leg.  Yoona giggled as Seunghyun nervously swallowed.  Yoona had never seen him so uncomfortable.  It was kind of funny to see him out of his comfort zone.

“Look, Hyeri!” Yoona chimed, “Your oppa seems to have a gift for you.”

Yoona unwrapped Hyeri’s arms from her leg and held her hand.  She helped her approach the tall man before them.  Seunghyun reached out the bag to Hyeri, who took it and bowed her head again.

                  “Thank you,” Hyeri said quietly.

“You’re welcome,” Seunghyun tried to smile.

Hyeri opened the bag and saw a beautiful doll inside.  A smile was plastered on her face as Yoona beamed in delight.  It was the first nice thing that Seunghyun had done for a child.  The doll was beautifully crafted.  Yoona knew that it was probably very expensive.

“You’re very kind,” Yoona muttered to him.

Seunghyun kept a straight face, “Don’t say that yet.  I need to talk to you later.”

_______________________

Yoona knew that something was wrong with Seunghyun. When they went home from their visit to Hyeri, Seunghyun went straight to his office.  He didn’t even say anything to Yoona on the way home.

Yoona slowly opened the door to his office to see him sitting down on his office chair.  He had the handset to pressed against his ear as he looked at his computer monitor.  With a frown on his face, he continued to talk on the phone.

“Lee, I want you to buy out that company and then sell it for the highest bid,” Seunghyun said, “No…I don’t want to hear any of your questions…just do what I say…that company is going bankrupt anyways…I might as well take advantage of the situation.”

Yoona knocked on the door letting him know that she was there.  He looked up and saw his girlfriend shyly approaching him.  He beckoned for her to enter as he put down the phone.  He continued to type a new e-mail as Yoona took a seat across from him.

He looked like he was already the CEO.  He was going to take the position in two to three months, but he was already doing the duties of the big boss.

                  “What’s wrong?” Yoona questioned.

Seunghyun bitterly answered, “A reckless representative for the company caused a major setback for the company.  Stock was lost, and I’m trying to make up for it.  Stupid people annoy the hell out of me.”

Yoona walked over to his side of the desk and looked at the computer screen.  The screen showed many graphs and charts that overlooked all of the companies that Seunghyun wanted to buy.  The gears in her brain began to work as she thought of a plan.

“You shouldn’t buy that chain of amusement parks.  No one is going to buy it because going to an amusement park isn’t a necessity in life,” Yoona suggested, “In my opinion, you should buy that small mining company in South America.  I heard that there’s a businessman by the name of Mr. Carter that wants to purchase that mining company in a few months.  He doesn’t have the funds to buy it as of now, but because his company is rising, his assets are expected to increase within a few months.  He’ll buy it, and you’ll have a vast amount of profits.”

He stared at Yoona.  He never thought of that plan.  Yoona didn’t seem the type that would ever be interested in business.  He sighed out in disbelief and quickly typed out an email to his assistant about Yoona’s plan.

“I’m surprised,” he admitted, “I thought you wouldn’t be interested in business.”

Yoona replied, “I had an A in my economics and government class.  I’m good, okay?”

Seunghyun had a smile on his face until he remembered something.  His grin turned into a bitter frown.  Yoona tilted her head to see the shift of feeling he had just experienced.

“Is something wrong?” Yoona questioned, “And when we were with Hyeri, you said that you wanted to speak with me.  What did you want to say?”

He simply opened a drawer in his desk and took out a Manila folder.  He pushed it towards Yoona.  She quickly took it and opened it to see that there were pictures of her.  The first picture showed her getting out of her car with a pair of sunglasses on.  She looked at the next picture and saw a picture of her eating dinner with Yoochun.  Yoona sighed and pushed away the folder.

“Can you tell me why you have your men following me around?  I’m not a child!” Yoona cried out.

Seunghyun narrowed his eyes.  He thought that she had no right to be yelling at him when she was the one that was meeting up with Yoochun behind his back.  He stood up from his seat and stared at her.

“If you’re going to be meeting up with others behind my back, then it’s only rightful that I have my people follow you,” Seunghyun barked, “Are you having an affair with Yoochun?”

Yoona couldn’t believe him.  Did he not trust her?  She stood up from her seat and crossed her arms.

“Are you second guessing me?” Yoona interrogated.

He crossed his arms, too, “Well, what were you doing with Yoochun then?  Why didn’t you tell me that you were going to meet up with him?”

Yoona refused to tell him.  She was about to walk out of his office until he beat her to the door and shut it.  He locked the door behind him, which seemed to frighten Yoona.  She gulped and took a step back.

“You better tell me why,” he warned her, “And it better be a good reason.”

“No,” Yoona shook her head, “I’m not going to tell you.  You’re being a stupid jerk right now.”

Because of her reply, he came to a quick conclusion that she was cheating on him.  His eyes were filled with wrath and he stepped towards her.  He grabbed her wrist and pulled her towards him.  She winced in pain as she tried to brush away his grip, but he was stronger than her.

                  “Seunghyun, stop it!” Yoona yelled.

“Tell me!” Seunghyun repeated, “What does he have that I don’t?”

“You’re talking nonsense!” Yoona cried out, “Please let go of my wrist!”

Seunghyun ignored her request, “What were you doing with him?  Tell me now!  Why did you have to cheat on me?”

His grip on her wrist got even tighter.  She began to feel his wrath through his grasp on her.  She had told herself that no matter what happened, she wasn’t going to cry.  Seunghyun was just feeling overly jealous right now.

As she took another step back, he took another step forward.  Her back hit the wall as he cornered her in his own office.  He bent down so that his eyes were on her eye level.  Yoona swore that there was fire in his eyes.  Emotions of jealousy, wrath, and distress were shown through his eyes.  Yoona grimaced as he tightened his hold on her wrist again.

His face inched closer to hers, which escaladed her fright.  She was never scared of him.  When he tightened his grip on her fragile wrist again, it hit her limit.  She tried to make the tears stop, but they managed to escape her eyes.  Tears began to cascade down her pure face.

“Please stop,” Yoona whispered, “It hurts.”

Those last two words caught him off guard.  He didn’t even realize that his grip on her wrist was that tight.  He quickly let go of her wrist to see a red ring around her thin wrist.  He felt immediate remorse.  He quickly pulled her into an embrace, but she gently pushed him away.  She wiped the tears with the back of her hand and forced a plastered smile on her face.

“Seunghyun, I think I need to go to get some air,” Yoona told him.

The look on his face was something that she had never seen before.  He was full of panic and regret.  Yoona knew that if she left him like this, he would do something stupid because he wouldn’t be able to forgive himself for hurting her.

Yoona assured him, “I’m not breaking up with you.  I just need time to think things over.”
