Sound of Happiness
Heartless MachineSOUND OF HAPPINESS.
I didn't finish my sentence.
"Just say it," the doctor told me and pat my shoulder.
I looked through the glazed door.
The woman stood outside and looked at me.
"I want to feel something."
"What do you mean?"
"I want to have feelings like everybody else."
"So do you mean sadness and all that stuff?"
I nodded. "And happiness."
"We'll work on that."
The laboratory looked like a normal house from the outside.
Inside there were a lot rooms filled with prototypes.
The perfect soft skin, silk-like hair.
Eyes. Blue ones, green ones, hazel ones.
And minds. Filled with artificial intelligence.
Intelligence which makes you perfect. A genius.
I never saw somebody else, just those two people.
The doctor and the woman. Only these two.
Of course there must be other people, who work on this science.
People who made me like this.
Why didn't I die?
Why am I cursed to be like this?
Why wasn't it the person next to me who also died?
"Please lay down," the woman said.
"Close your eyes. You'll wake up soon."
I woke up.
I never woke up before, because I never slept.
It was strange. My legs were so heavy.
I felt so tired.
I felt.
"Sahee-unnie? Are you okay?"
Minah stood up from her chair and tried to help me.
I almost fell on the ground, if she hadn't been there.
"I ... I feel sick." I felt sick.
After school I used to go home.
This time I almost couldn't even get to the door.
"I think something went wrong," the woman said and tried to carry me inside.
"We should check that."
"What happened?" I asked and looked at myself in the mirror.
"Nothing really bad. The emotion section just went a little bit crazy.
It's just in it's testing phase. We've checked that and it's not happening again."
"Are you okay?" Minah asked worried and looked at me.
"I was just a bit sick, but that's okay. I smiled.
"Oh, okay." She still looked at me. At my smile.
The leaves covered the ground of the graveyard. It was a warm sunny day.
Not like last time.
I kneeled in front of Chaeri's grave and put down my flowers.
I touched her engraved name.
"So this time you are here before me."
It was him. Lu Han.
Why do we always meet at the graveyard?
He carried a red rose with him. Her favorite flowers.
"Yes, I think so." I smiled at him.
I could see a little surprise in his face.
"How did you two meet?" he asked when we were sitting on a park bench.
I already thought about this story.
"In elementary school we both attended this camp near Busan.
We became friends and met there every summer."
"So you two were very close?"
I nodded. "I was really shocked when I heard about this..."
Chaeri couldn't even get as close as this to Lu Han.
Now I sat here right next to him on this bench.
"Was she in your class?" I asked.
He shook his head. "She was in the parallel class."
"How come you are so close to her?"
He looked into my eyes. It was like he was looking for an answer.
Deep inside me.
"When she died I felt guilty. Before this all happened I knew she was in love with me.
But I had another girlfriend. So I broke up with this girl after Chaeri's death."
"Why did you do that?" I somehow felt sorry for Minah.
He hesitated. "I don't know."
"Have you ever been in love?" I didn't know how I came up with this topic.
Lu Han looked at me and laughed a little. "Yes, of course. And you?"
"Not yet," I answered and smiled. "I'm still waiting."
He smiled too and got up. "Let's go now. If it's getting dark this place'll be scary."
"I'm not afraid of ghosts." I said. "I can fight them if you want."
He laughed brightly.
The sound of happiness.
