Because of You
Heartless Machine
LU HAN.
Every time I embraced her fragile body in my arms.
Every time I touched her cold, pale skin.
Every time her dark eyes met with mine.
Every time her lips brushed against mine.
Every time I feared that it would be the last time.
Living with the fear of losing her, day by day.
Knowing that she won't be there one day.
My heart was heavy, tired, exhausted.
From pain.
“Promise that you'll let me go.”
Her words lingered in my mind,
repeating themselves over and over again.
Day by day.
She knew that it was coming to an end.
Even though she tried to hide it,
I could see how her body became weaker,
how her little soul was caged in that dying body.
How she couldn't escape.
Then it started.
She could still walk, slowly, but she could.
But her hands were weak – not being able
to lift anything as heavy as a book.
She always held onto me when she wanted
to go somewhere, so I made sure to be at her
side as often as I could.
She needed me.
Mrs. Kim just watched us, silently.
She knew that it was coming to an end
and she knew that she couldn't stop it.
It was hopeless to her.
“Lu Han.”
Her almost lifeless, weak voice echoed against
the white walls of her bedroom.
I softly squeezed her hand, signalizing that I was there.
Her eyes were closed, her skin cold as ice.
Her breath was low, almost inaudible.
“I'm here.” I tried to control my trembling voice.
I could see the corner of her lips moving a little.
A smile. “I know.”
She lifted her hand and touched my cheek, gently.
Don't go, Sahee.
I bent down a little and gave her a kiss.
Soft, light, gentle. Like wind.
Don't leave me.
Her hand was slowly dropping,
but I supported it with my own.
“The moment I saw you, I fell in love with you.”
Her voice wasn't shaky, not like mine.
It was low, but steady, certain about every word.
“The day we met – you weren't mine.
But I needed to have you.”
She took a deep breath, getting exhausted.
“Don't,” I tried to stop her, but she continued.
“I'm sorry, Lu Han.”
“Don't,” I whispered again, trying to calm her.
Sahee's eyes opened a little, a pair of blurry eyes
looking at me, a layer of tears coating them.
“I'm hurting you again, right?”
I shook my head and pursed my lips,
trying to hold my tears back.
“You made me the happiest man on earth.
Just because you loved me.”
A slight laughter escaped her lips, before
she looked at me.
“Don't cry,” Sahee said and reached out to
wipe my tears, but her hand was too weak.
I'm sorry.
“I want the happiest man to remain the happiest.”
But you were the reason.
“Promise?” She lifted her pinky, trembling.
I linked my finger with hers, nodding.
“I will always love you, Sahee.”
Her eyes locked with mine – the last time.
“You will always be the one I love.”
She smiled – the last time.
“I will miss you, Lu Han.”
Her hand brushed against my face – the last time.
“You will be the happiest man on earth.”
Her eyes moved behind her lids – the last time.
“Because of you.”
“Sahee?”
I bit my lips until they felt like they were bleeding.
There she was – like a porcelain doll.
Perfect, fragile and cold.
Her soul had left its cage.
She was free.
Finally.
A single tear rolled down my cheek.
“Don't cry.”
I promised you that I'll let you go.
But how can I let you go,
the most precious person in my life,
and still remain the happiest man on earth?
I buried my face in her hair, inhaling her scent.
Cherry blossoms. Light. Innocent.
A soul is like wind.
But memories.
Engraved in my heart.
How could I let them go?
