Past
Heartless MachinePAST.
"I don't understand." If I would be real my voice should've trembled.
"Chaeri didn't see the car coming. I had been rejecting her before that accident.
Maybe 15 minutes before everything happened."
"Why did you reject her?"
"Because I had no feelings for her."
Silence.
Machines don't have a heart.
They can't have emotions.
They can't love.
"If I could turn back to that day ...
Maybe I should have said that I liked her.
She would live now."
"She doesn't. She died."
Lu Han looked at me. At Sahee.
"I would like to say sorry.
I am truly sorry, Chaeri."
If I was human, I would have cried now.
I am a machine.
"She would understand."
Mr Kim, the doctor, led me to the graveyard.
All gravestones looked neat and tidy, especially those newer ones.
Chaeri's was in the left center of the graveyard.
In front of it were some dead flowers. Dead.
Lee Chaeri. Rest In Peace.
Our Daughter. Our Friend.
Our Daughter. How stupid that sounds.
She was never a daughter of somebody.
Her father ran away when she wasn't even born.
Her mother married an alcoholic and died because of cancer.
The alcoholic and his mad son never cared.
Our Friend.
Chaeri had no friends. No real ones.
"Are you okay?" Mr Kim asked and patted my shoulder.
I just nodded and put down a red rose.
Chaeri loved red roses.
"Time to go, Sahee."
"And how was your day in your new body?" Mrs Kim asked, ready to take some notes on her notepad.
"Nice." I smiled and played with my long soft hair.
"Anything we should change or update?"
"No." My voice doesn't tremble when it should.
"Nothing?"
"Nothing." Lack of emotions.
The days and weeks passed.
I was a genius at school, even if I never raised my hand.
I was the number one on the school ranking.
I never had a mistake.
"Sahee-unnie?"
I turned around, just to meet Minah's eyes. "What do you want?"
"Umm, I thought, maybe ... Can you help me with Maths? There will be an exam next week."
"No." You stole him. "I don't tutor anybody."
"Okay, I'm sorry Sahee-unnie."
I turned around and as the door closed behind me, I could hear her sobbing.
I wanted to know, what happened after Chaeri died.
Minah was strange. She is so sensitive.
Lu Han didn't speak with her.
He never looks at her.
What happened?
Maybe Chaeri was more than I thought.
"Teacher Do?" I was the last to leave the classroom.
Teacher Do looked up from his papers. "Yes, Sahee?"
"I heard about that girl ... I think her name is Lee Chaeri?"
He looked frozen. His face lost all of it's emotion. "What do you want to know, Sahee?"
"What happened to her?"
"Um... How should I explain this? She had a car accident a year ago and ... died."
I tried to sound a bit sad. "Oh." Didn't work. "What happened after that?"
"Our school closed about one week and some of her classmates attended her funeral.
Some of the boys didn't show up in school and only came back one month after her death.
Everyone was very shocked. If I'm right, Minah was very affected."
Chaeri hated Minah. "Oh, okay."
"Why are you asking?"
I shook my head. "It's nothing, I was just a bit curious."
