That Boy

Heartless Machine

THAT BOY.

LU HAN.

It was strange.
Everthing had changed.
How she looked at me.
How she spoke to me.
Everything was different.

"Are you okay?" I asked again and again, but she just nodded quickly.
Her eyes were always secretly watching me, but when I turned around,
to look at her, her eyes were escaping me.
Like if she was escaping me.

The year almost ended. Christmas was over.
The fairy lights disappeared and the streets were glowing, covered in snow.

Sahee's hands were cold on that day, as always.
We were walking along the Han River, hand in hand.
She was by my side. That was all I wanted.

She suddenly stopped and leaned against the handrail of the bridge.
My eyes rested on hers for a long time.
We were just standing there, looking at each other.
Wordless.

"Are you still thinking about him?" I suddenly said.
My breath ascended in the cold winter air.
Sahee lowered her eyes, but shook her head. "No."
I sighed softly and took her hand.
"If you don't want to tell me—"
"No," Sahee interrupted me, "it's not like I wouldn't want to tell you."
I furrowed my eyebrows for a moment before I opened my mouth.
"What is it then?"

Her eyes escaped mine again.
"It's... it's just that I can't tell you." Sahee's voice broke.
I put my arm around her and hold her. "Don't cry."
But she cried. She cried and cried.
Silently.

I spent the nights thinking about us.
About we first met at the graveyard.
About our first kiss at the graveyard.
About us writing our messages on the locks at Namsan Tower.
We were happy.

But are we still happy?

"Lu Han-oppa!"
Her familiar voice let me turn around. "Sahee."
Her eyes looked worried as she took a deep breath.
"We have to talk."

SAHEE.

I pulled him into an empty classroom.
He looked a bit surprised and maybe also a bit shocked.
His eyes told me that.

"What happened?" Lu Han asked and gulped.
I opened my mouth to close it again.

I thought about this the whole time.
Everynight I spent up planning out this single moment.
But now, even now, I wasn't ready yet.

His eyes followed every move I made.
I went over to the blackboard and leaned against it, before going back to him again.

"Did I tell you about the machines yet?" I began slowly.
He furrowed his eyebrows for a moment. "Yes."
"How they are created?" I asked again.
Lu Han's eyes told me that he was slightly confused. "What do you mean?"

"Before a machine is created, there has to be someone, who will provide the basics."

I inhaled slowly, trying to calm me down. My eyes began to burn, so I turned my back to Lu Han.

"What do you mean by basics?"

"Someone who will provide memories. Looks. Or maybe even both."

My voice began to get weaker. Slowly.

"In Kai's case, he provided looks. Appearance."

Say it.

"In my case, I provided memories."

"Memories?" he repeated.

I nodded, my back still turned to him. "Memories."

"So you remember your life before you became a machine?"

I bit my lip and closed my eyes. "Yes."

There was a long silence.

Maybe he already left the room.

Maybe he ...

"What can you remember?" Lu Han's voice was unreadable,

but I was too afraid to turn around.

"I remember that I was a beautiful girl," I began, my voice trembling.

"I was popular, loved, loved by boys. I could have had everyone."

Tears began to run down my cheeks, but I just let them flow.

"But I wasn't interested. I didn't care about them."

"But there was this one boy I fell in love with."

"I wished that I could be with him. But he had a girlfriend."

I waited a moment, but Lu Han didn't say anything.

"I loved him, but everything was a one-sided love."

Maybe he doesn't understand it.

"So I ran away. From the truth, that he didn't love me back."

It was enough. I broke into pieces.

My tears didn't stop.

I waited. But nothing happened.

"I was this boy, right?" his voice was barely audible.

I didn't had to say "yes", because Lu Han already knew the answer.

"You were Lee Chaeri."
