Defence

Without heading back to the hotel Yoona moved forward with the plan. She’d been placed with the group led by Lee Jung Hwa, to her luck. The two small black cars stopped in front of the City Hall and they all stepped out. Police tape had been issued everywhere and they had to crawl underneath the tape in order to get inside.

Lee Jung Hwa pulled open the doors leading them inside explaining that they were to get a good look at everything before moving for the woods. Their first mission was to observe and look for anything the inspection team may have missed. Yoona thought it was pointless. The inspection team should have spent two nights at the City Hall investigating already, what point did the observation mission have to do with observing what the inspection team already did?

Yoona glanced down the hall where the red carpet ran and noticed the large chandelier on the ground being readied to be picked up by a garbage team in the morning. Lee Jung Hwa explained that the fugitive had shot it down in order to distract them and run. Yoona decided the fugitive was smart and the security had done a poor job that night. She glanced at the furniture and down the hallway wondering if it led to a mass conference room of some sort.

The FBI led them up the stairs to the murder site and on the way there Yoona couldn’t help but stare at the blood on the ground. The men that had died had obviously been some heavy people and the fugitive had done some good job shooting at their critical points.

The carpet extended down the hall and Yoona entered the room where the president’s son had last lived his life. As the rest gathered at the front of the desk to speak and assume their own conclusions she headed toward the windows. At first she’d been excited by the high buildings across the street but as she inched to her right closer to the group she felt a cold air breeze against her face. Confused about where it was coming from she glanced around and noticed it at last.

Third window to the right was where a small air hole, that didn’t even have a radius of 2 centimeters, sat near the corner of the window. It would have been missed by a person who wasn’t careful enough with inspecting. Yoona felt her brain spin quickly. Through her training sessions with guns she’d worked with Glocks, Revolvers, and Rifles and of all kinds of guns that fell under those categories. She’d once worked with a sniper rifle but had never shot it at anyone. A sniper rifle?

Yoona’s eyes immediately fled to the buildings from across the street.

“Sir,” she called, “maybe it wasn’t anyone on the inside who’d made a shot.”

Everyone turned their attention to her.

“Look at this,” Yoona carefully pointed to the hole in the window, “and those buildings across the street. It’s the perfect distance for a sniper to aim and make a shot at the president’s son.”

“Are you kidding me?” one of the deputies asked, a tall man with a brown sweater on.

“It looks like just a crack in the window.” one of the woman added.

“Are you sure you know what you’re doing here?” another woman spoke.

“It doesn’t look like you know about guns, nor have you ever shot one in your whole life,” someone else added onto her ridiculing list.

“I’ll have authorities check it, we’ll put it into consideration Deputy Im,” Lee Jung Hwa said after a long moment of staring. “Enough, lets move out to the woods.”

Yoona watched as the rest snickered at her and walked out, she followed almost reluctantly.

The leaves crunched under her feet as the trees remained like statues beside, in front, and behind them. It seemed just the perfect place for a hide and seek game in the dark, that is if the hiders and seekers were wearing dark clothing. Yoona imagined how the fugitive may have pounced the securities while hiding behind the trees. She found herself silently complimenting the fugitive for having done such a thing.

“Deputy Im,” Lee Jung Hwa’s voice broke into her thoughts as they turned back onto the road, “you’ve your driver’s license?”

Everyone turned to look at her. Without turning to glance at them she confidently replied, “Of course, sir.”

“In your records there are recorded cases where you’ve driven after high speed criminals running the roads like animals,” the FBI agent said, “I believe you can drive just as crazy?”

“Of course, sir.”

“You’re stationed nearest the station coincidentally, I expect that you’ll be at the station ready to leave and drive if you’re to receive a call from us,” he told.

“Yes, sir.”

Yoona returned to the hotel calming herself with silent self talk. She’d realized that they were playing with her, testing her. Well, she’ll show them that she wasn’t all just a pretty face and weak looking girl. Yoona almost felt her hand ball into a fist as she stepped into the elevator.

After a cold shower she found herself sitting on her bed with the TV on. She was watching a news channel while she talked to her parents.

“Don’t work too hard.” her dad worried over the phone.

“I know.” she replied before she heard her mother’s voice in the background urging for the phone. Her parents seem to bicker some bits before her mother’s voice took over.

“Donghae’s mother sounded upset when she heard you went down to Kwangju. Did no one know about the cancellation?” her mother pressed over the phone. “I didn’t want to ask because I didn’t want to bud in onto your problems but…is something going on between you and Donghae? Does he perhaps…have another girl or something of some sort?”

The suggestion of another girl made Yoona feel unsure, but she doubted it. Donghae wasn’t the sort to two time.

“Don’t worry mom. He’ll take care of everything,” she assured. “We’ll talk about things when I get back.”

Something fell in the bathroom catching her attention.

“I have to go now. I’ll talk to you later.”

“Yoona, Im Yoona,” her mother called over the phone then she hung up.

Slipping the phone into her pocket Yoona got up from where she was sitting and took each step quietly and as quickly as possible toward the bathroom. Stopping by the closed door she paused and abruptly pushed it open with a hand. Flicking the lights on she stared as the yellow lights slowly came on and edged in toward the shower curtains. She gulped and slide the curtains aside to see that a shampoo bottle had fallen into the tub. False alarm.

Heading back out she turned off the television and turned the lights off climbing into bed.

“Yah,” he called walking out of the bathroom with his hair wet, “don’t you think you can help out a little?”

“With what?” she questioned staring at the TV screen from the couch.

“Cooking, cleaning,” he replied heading into the kitchen and pulling the fridge open.

“I don’t know how,” she told.

“What?”

She didn’t reply.

“Sheesh,” he grumbled.

While he busied himself in the kitchen she found her mind drifting off elsewhere even when her eyes were glued to the moving screen. In her mind she was trying to figure out how the cops would try to track her down. Would they head all the way down to Kwangju and start from there? Or would they each start in different locations and end up in Seoul? Of course, they would start from forensic evidence. They’d try to find finger prints and dig out her name from the list of maids that had been there that night.

Taecyeon stared at her as she wolfed down the rice and the rest of the food he’d made in one bite, one swallow.

“Yah, can’t you slow down? You make me feel like I’m going to choke along with you if you end up getting the food clogged in your throat.” he commented. “Drink some water.” he pushed a cup of water in front of her and when she just stared at he it continued, “I didn’t drink out of it!”

“Don’t yell,” she ordered and drunk down the whole glass. After taking a breath she said, “Haven’t you heard of the saying ‘Eat like it’s your last?’”

He stared at her as if she were stupid, “No.”

“I live by that.” Victoria explained. “You might as well live by that too.”

He frowned at her. “What did you do to get chased by bad guys? Steal money?”

Victoria shook her shoulders, “I did nothing wrong.”

“Psh,” snorted, “liar.”

“Be me for a day and you wouldn’t survive.”

- - - - -

“There’s been a new order.” a man in a dark velvet uniform appeared before a dozen others in a dark basement. “So Young and Jung Min are on the move. The rest of you are ordered to distract and diverge the FBI’s attention elsewhere.”

The rest dressed in their usual every day clothing, men and woman, stared at him.

“What about Code: B Victoria?”

“She’s to be left untouched.” he answered. “She’s Jung Min and So Young’s assignment.”

“If they’ve supposedly got it under control why are we being sent out?”

“We can’t let the FBI get to her before we do.” he explained in short detail.

“When do we head out?”

“Now.”

- - - - -

Something tugged at the back of her brain and Yoona opened her eyes. While growing up she’d been a deep sleeper. If a dog howled outside her window it wouldn’t pry her eyes open. While training as a cop she’d become a lighter sleeper, even the ticking minute hand of a clock would awake her within seconds. And this time it wasn’t the clock ticking. Someone’s footsteps was stirring her mind awake.

Yoona opened her eyes slowly as she lay on her side and glanced through the corner of her eyes. She was lucky that she didn’t wear glasses so therefore she’d always had sharp sight. Through her hair that covered her cheek she was able to make out the shape of a woman at the foot of her bed drawing closer to her. How had she gotten in? Yoona was soon to find out with the breeze flying in from the window…the window again.

Weapon…any weapon anywhere? Not anywhere near her. The only item on the bedside desk was the lamp. Too heavy to move. If she used a swift movement to carry that big item she’d be found out. She shouldn’t alarm her perpetrator. However, the only item she discovered hidden on her was her phone. Yoona debated. She didn’t want to lose her phone through such mechanic self defense…but she’d have no choice if she was being attacked. And she wasn’t wrong about it.

In that moment she felt the blanket sliding down across her feet, obviously the woman’s work, slowly pulling the blanket off her. Yoona waited and waited. When the blanket had been silently thrown to the floor Yoona took another peek at the woman and held her phone open under her so that it was invisible from sight. From the corner of her eye she pressed on the talk button and waited for the calling sign to appear. Once it did Yoona jumped off her bed, tossed the phone at the woman and watched as she hit it with a blazer sharp item. Her phone landed on the ground with a thud and Yoona grabbed the woman’s arms tossing her on the bed. The blade of the silver knife shone in the dark once the moonlight bounced off it.

Yoona’s eyes opened wide as she hadn’t expected such a weapon, “Who are you?!”

The woman underneath her twisted the knife in her hands but to no avail as Yoona ushered more strength through her hands.

“Answer me!” she shouted.

The woman pushed her off and as Yoona fell onto the ground she watched the perpetrator escape through the window. Alarmed that the woman may have escaped Yoona ran toward the balcony to find a loose string hanging from the edge of the railing.

“Shoot!” Yoona muttered and ran back into her room.

Without grabbing her jacket she ran through her door and raced down the stairs. The only thought that gushed through her mind was to catch that woman. Down on the first floor she whizzed pass the confused receptionist and out the solid colored doors.

The night sky stretched across the globe with a pitch black, just perfect for a hunt. Yoona raced down the sidewalk and around the hotel building. She hadn’t realized that the hotel covered such a wide amount of area. It took about half a minute for her to make it around. Quickly mapping her room location in her mind she stopped midway and glanced up. No sign of anyone hanging in the air nor anyone lying dead on the ground.

Spinning around Yoona didn’t miss the shadow disappearing around a corner. Quickly rushing after her Yoona bounded down the street into the still streets. Luckily the busy streets had been emptied by midnight. Silence pounded heavily into her ears as she pushed herself to run even faster pass the small city businesses. A clinic, herbal store, and a 24/7 hour sign hovered pass her.

The woman’s black outfit disguised her real well under the dark sky, but the moonlight gave her away. Good thing for the moon. Yoona cut through a short alley and jumped over a fallen silver trash can just in time to see the woman run in front of her. A smirk covered Yoona’s face as the woman glanced sideways at her alarmed. To her luck this woman didn’t seem to have enough run-away skills.

Jumping right onto her Yoona didn’t mind the flat hard surfaced ground as they landed onto it. They rolled a few times over each other as the other tried to pin the other down. In the end Yoona won.

Yoona tried to reach for the woman’s black mask but she blocked Yoona’s hand and held her hand inches above her mask. Her eyes glared back at Yoona.

“I won, show yourself,” Yoona demanded holding her down with even more force.

She still said nothing. In that split second Yoona watched as her eyes slide over to the side and Yoona only knew what that gesture meant seconds after a garbage bin came rolling down at her from above. Rolling away from the garbage bin and getting up to her feet she watched as the perpetrator and her accomplice started down the street. Who were they?

Her chest heaved heavily as she finally noticed that she barely had any breath left in her. Yoona stomped her foot again frustrated that she’d lost her second intruder and combed hand through her long hair.

By the time she made it back to the hotel she didn’t miss the sight of the others waiting for her in front of the hotel. Lee Jung Hwa’s glare marked the face of an unhappy middle aged man.

“Where were you?” he questioned.

“Out on a chase.” Yoona replied.

“Is that what that phone call was?” he continued.

“Phone call?” Yoona paused.

“I thought we made it clear that not one of us is supposed to move individually.” he recalled.

“She entered my bedroom. Was I supposed to let her attack me and get away with it?” Yoona bit back.

“Deputy!” he shouted. “You’re still on the wrong for moving by yourself! If you hadn’t called fine, but if you called me you should have waited for me to get here before going on the run. You understand what you did wrong here?”

Yoona couldn’t help but glare back at him.

“Grab your bags, you’re driving.”

In Yoona’s room she grabbed her suitcase and stared at her broken phone on the ground.

“Jesus Christ,” she bit her bottom lip and picked up the two pieces of her phone.

Chapter 72: Wow is all I can think of to write. This was an absolutely amazing fanfiction and I enjoyed every bit of it! Thank you so much for writing this. The original ending was so incredibly heart wrenching that I will admit I shed a few tears. The alternative ending did make me feel more optimistic though so thank you for writing that! Taecyeon and Victoria's storyline was my absolute favourite. Every time I read his confessions about her, my insides would melt. Ah I'm rambling now, so I shall stop. I don't know if you're still writing stories these days but I hope you will continue for a long time!
