The boy

Nameless

Wonwoo was already walking down the stairs when his mum called him from the kitchen.

“Wonwoo honey”

“I’m going down, mum” he said and he reached the kitchen a few seconds later. He found his mum already dressed to go to work and his little sister, having breakfast.

“Make sure she eats all the breakfast, ok?” she said as she approached her son.

“Yes, don’t worry mum” he said

“I’ll be back home at night, so take care of your sister, ok?”

“Yes, I always do” he said and she kissed her son on the cheek.

“You’re the best son ever”

“The only son you have” he laughed.

“You’re right” his mum said and looked at her watch “Oh god, is this late already? I’m leaving” she said and walked to her daughter and kissed the top of her head “Bye, sweetheart” then she hugged her son “Bye, honey”

“Bye, love you mum” he said.

“Love you too, dear” she said smiling as she took her keys, bag and jacket.

“Say bye to mum” Wonwoo told his sister, who happily waved at her.

“Bye mummy” she said and their mum waved one last time before running out of the house, late as always.

“Hanji-yah, don’t learn from our mum, don’t be like her when you grow up” he told his sister as he sat down to eat his breakfast as well.

“Why?” she asked.

“She’s always late” Wonwoo sighed and his sister smiled.

Soon both siblings finished eating. Hanji went upstairs to get dressed. Wonwoo already got dressed before going down so he just had to take his bag to leave. So meanwhile his sister was getting ready he put the dishes on the dish washer.

A few minutes later his sister went down, with her uniform on but her hair… her hair looked a bit… Let’s say it looked different, but Wonwoo couldn’t help but laugh at her cuteness.

“Let me do your hair for you, Hanji… your hair looks like a nest” he said and both of them went up to the bathroom again to do her hair. Wonwoo neatly tied her hair into a high and stylish ponytail “Better than before, right?” his 7-year-old sister nodded.

Both of them grabbed their own bags and Wonwoo took his keys before going out of home heading towards their schools. Wonwoo was in high school and Hanji was in primary school, but luckily their schools were next to each other, so Wonwoo would always drop his sister by her school before going to his own. And once the classes were done, he’d go pick her up and both of them would walk home.

He kissed his sister on the cheek after he crouched down to be on the same eye level as her “Be good, ok?” he said gently and he caressed her cheek.

“I’m always good” she said smiling “And be good too”

“Ok, I’ll try” he said laughing at her cuteness.

“Be careful too”

“Yes” she nodded “I’ll go now. Bye Wonwoo, love you” she kissed his cheek.

“Love you too” he watched as his sister entered the school to meet her friends. He smiled when she hugged one of them. He sighed and walked to his school to meet his own friends and start the classes.

Wonwoo sat down on his usual lunch table with his friends Soonyoung, Jihoon and Jisoo, holding back the tensed stare he was sharing with another student in the cafeteria. That boy didn’t stop looking at him the whole time, so Wonwoo decided to do a staring contest with him, secretly, he just didn’t want his friends to know about that, but obviously they noticed it.

“Wonwoo, what the hell are you doing?” Jisoo asked him, but since he got no response from the silent boy Soonyoung hit him on the head lightly, to grab his attention, but that didn’t work either.

“Who are you looking at?” Jihoon wondered and he looked the direction Wonwoo was staring at “What the…? Why are you staring back at-”

“Ssh, I don’t want to know his name” Wonwoo said as he held up a hand to stop his friend from talking.

“As you want” the boy shrugged and kept eating, ignoring his friend.

Finally the unknown boy looked away with a slight smirk drawn on his face. Wonwoo smiled. “I won, you jerk” he said happy with his victory.

“What the hell are you talking about?” Soonyoung said and Wonwoo just shrugged as an answer and started eating. Every now and then he felt the boy’s eyes on him, but he decided to just ignore him.

“Wonwoo, can you hang out after school?” Jihoon asked and the boy shook his head no.

“Sorry guys, today my mum works till late and I have to take care of my sister” he said.

“Is she ok?” Jisoo asked, he always asked Wonwoo about his sister. Hanji really liked Jisoo and the boy adored her, and he cared for her a lot as well.

“Yeah, she’s doing fine” he replied smiling “She’s amazing”

“Yeah, she is” Jisoo said and Wonwoo sighed, looking down. He closed his eyes for a moment when he felt his friend’s hand on his shoulder. Then he looked up again and looked at him again smiling. His three friends gave him supportive looks before Soonyoung changed the subject quickly. He hated seeing his friend like that.

At the end of the day Wonwoo headed to his locker to leave there the book he didn’t need to study or do homework. Once he closed it he spotted a few lockers away from his the unknown boy, he was also putting there some books and Wonwoo stayed there, looking at him and when he saw the boy closed his locker he turned around and started walking as if he wasn’t looking at him. He walked past the tall boy and he could already feel his eyes on his and that smirk on his lips.

“Ayo, man” Jisoo said happily “Do you want some help with your sister?”

“No, it’s ok, thanks though” Wonwoo said.

“No problem, man. If you need help you can always ask us” Soonyoung said and Wonwoo smiled.

“Thanks” Wonwoo said “I have to go now”

“See you tomorrow” his friends said and he waved at them before heading to his sister’s school.

He reached the building and waited for his sister for a few minutes. As he waited he looked around for a moment, and spotted a guy with a helmet on his hand and walking towards a motorbike. He looked more curiously and then the boy turned around. , why is he everywhere? Wonwoo swore inside his mind when he recognized the boy. Soon his thoughts got interrupted by his sister.

“Wonwoo!” she called happily as she ran towards her brother. He crouched down and hugged her.

“Hey, how was school?” he asked.

“Very good, I made a new friend” she said.

“Oh is that so? Is she nice?” he asked smiling at her.

“Yes, but he’s a boy” she said “And he’s so handsome… he looks like you”

“Do you like him?” he asked surprised.

“Yes, he’s really cool, he’s a good student too” she said.

“No way, you’re not going to date him” he said and stood up as he grabbed her sister’s hand.

“Why?” she pouted.

“You’re too young to have a boyfriend, just wait a bit, get to know him, ok?”

“Are you saying that because you’ve never dated before? You’re jealous, right? You don’t want me to start dating before you” she brother as she poked her brother’s waist.

“It’s not that” he said pouting.

“Yeah sure” she said “But I’m sure you’d like him, his name’s Donghwan, he’s so tall…” his sister kept talking about that kid but Wonwoo got distracted by the nameless boy, he was looking at him with that same smirk he always wore on his face “Are you listening to me?” she asked and Wonwoo stopped walking.

“Yeah, I am” he said without looking at his sister yet.

“Are you? Then what did I say?”

“His name’s Dongchan and he’s tall” he said and her sister laughed.

“Not Dongchan, Donghwan”

“Yeah, it’s similar” he said with his eyes still fixed on the boy. Then Hanji noticed he was looking that boy, she looked at her brother, then at the boy, then back at her brother.

“Who’s that?” she asked “Is he your friend?”

“Hmm?” he asked turning to his sister after the other boy looked away. He was smiling to himself because he won again “No, he’s… just some boy who goes to my school”

“Oh, I see” she said a nodded “I’m hungry, let’s go home”

Both of them walked to their house. They reached the front door and Wonwoo took out his keys, opened the door and let his sister come in first. She ran upstairs to leave her bag and Wonwoo walked behind her, in a slower pace. He entered his bedroom left there his bag and then went to find Hanji.

“Hanji, let’s eat something, ok?” he said while he leaned against the door frame looking at her.

“Yay! I want a sandwich” she said as both of them went downstairs to the kitchen.

“Ok, then I’ll make you a sandwich, and I’ll make one for myself too”

They entered the kitchen. She sat on the chair and looked at her brother make the sandwiched. Soon Wonwoo was finished and put the food in front of her, she smiled and took a bite of the sandwich.

“How is it?” he asked.

“It’s delicious” she said and Wonwoo smiled “Oh, I have homework today, will you help me?”

“Of course, as soon as you’re done with your sandwich”

They finished their food and they headed to Wonwoo’s bedroom to do their homework. He helped Hanji with hers and at the same time he did his own. When they finished they played together.

When it was dinner time Wonwoo made dinner. He learned how to cook the basics because his mum was out working most of the time, so he had to take care of Hanji and himself. Wonwoo knew his sister was more comfortable with him than their mum. She was always out and barely saw them, Wonwoo was always the one to take care of her; he made her food when she was hungry, he walked her and picked her up from school, he helped her with her homework, he played with her, basically he acted as her mum, but he didn’t care, he loved his sister. Wonwoo always felt as if he had to protect her as the brother he was, but also as her friend.

He finished cooking and put the food on the table.

“HANJI, DINNER’S READY” he called his sister and she’d always answer right away and hear her steps coming down from the stairs, but today that didn’t happen “HANJI?” still no response. Then his heart started beating faster in fright, he ran upstairs and walked into her bedroom. He sighed loudly when he saw his sister asleep on her bed with the TV on “Thank god you’re fine” he said. Then he sat on the edge of the bed and shook her lightly “Hey, dinner’s ready”

“Oh” she said opening her eyes slowly “I fell asleep…”

“Yeah, you scared me when you didn’t come down” Wonwoo said and she smiled “Don’t do that again, please”

“I’m sorry” she said “I won’t do it again”

“Come on, go and eat” he said and Hanji jumped out of the bed “I’ll come in moment”

She exited the room and went downstairs leaving Wonwoo alone. He sighed and closed his eyes. He got so scared before, why would he think something happened to her? Why didn’t he think she fell asleep? Wonwoo, it won’t happen again, relax, he told himself, but still that nervous feeling didn’t go away.

This fic is very light. After reading this, I understand why there is a star beside the title. I love all the couples. I want to be Wonwoo's mom and Jonghan's dad is so cool. Looking forward for the sequel.
