Rinka's Dream

Midnight Academy

Rinka, I know I promised you that I would stay for your transformation,” her father cringed at the word transformation but continued, “but I have to go. Don’t worry, I’ll be back in time for your change.” Cringing, her father finished.

“Where are you going?” Rinka’s eyebrows furrowed as she asked her father in confusion. Was there any other place for her father to go? Well, of course there was, considering he has been somewhere all these years while he was dead. Well, he still is.

“It is nowhere important.” He father smiled, ruffling Rinka’s hair. He couldn’t hug her because of the chains that were holding her up, but ruffling her hair was better than not being able to do anything. Without letting a chance for Rinka to answer, his figure started becoming even more transparent than it already was, and eventually it dissolved into nothing.

Thin air.

Rinka sighed and hung her head down, looking at the glossy floor tiles. She smiled, but only because her father promised to come back. She had wished for that all her life; her wish came true. She suddenly remembered the events that happened in the previous however hours.

JR slammed Hongki again the wall. She called him a monster. Ren bit her. She got locked in this room. Her father came back. She’s going to turn into a vampire.

Is this even reality? She thought to herself. None of the things that occurred seemed real. Even though she was happy that her father returned, but her evil words towards JR still came back and haunted her. How could she call him something like that so easily? Especially since he really was what she had called him.

But she didn’t know at the time, so was it still her fault. Ugh, of course it is. She thought. I shouldn’t even be using that word in the first place. She sighed at her own insensitivity.

Though it was still hard to register the fact that everyone at Midnight Academy was a vampire. She shared a dorm with vampires, her teacher was a vampire, Headmaster Kwang was a vampire, the two boys who she seemed to start having feelings for were vampires.

How could she already start to have feelings for them though? She knew barely anything about them, they knew barely anything about her. She didn’t know how many siblings they had, when their birthday was, what their parents’ names were. None of that.

But nowadays it seemed like you didn’t need to know any of that information to start liking someone. It was just their attitude and looks. And they each had both of those.

The thing was, they hated each other. They were complete opposites. If they were complete opposites, then how could she fall for both of them? Aren’t people only supposed to have one ideal type? In fact, she didn’t even know what her ideal type was.

Someone who will protect me, treat me like a princess. Someone who will never use me just to get something they want. Someone who actually cares about me.

Her mind suddenly stopped thinking about that, and remembered that she read JR’s mind. Her eyes widened as it suddenly came to her. How could she read his mind? Was it even his? Wait, of course it was it was his voice! And he kind of confessed to her? He said he thought he liked her, and she answered back in her mind too.

How could she possibly be reading his mind? Was the transformation starting to kick in already?
“Damn it.” She cursed under her breath and looked up at the clock. There were exactly seven hours until she could finally get out of the room. But she wasn’t going to come out as a human, she was going to come out as a completely different kind.

***

“Go to sleep~ Go to sleep~ Go to sleep my baby~ Go to sleep~ Go to sleep~”
I saw my mother rocking a small infant in a light pink blanket, she was holding her in her arms, singing her a lullaby. I heard the soft giggles of the baby, and her small hand reached out, caressing my mother’s cheek.

“Mom.” I said, calling her out, making sure she knew who I was. She slowly looked up from the baby, and made contact with me. She didn’t move an inch. In fact, she stared at me bluntly, with no expression, and looked back down at the baby girl she was holding.

It seemed like the baby fell asleep, so my mother carefully turned, setting her in her crib.
“Mom.” I said a second time, a bit louder. Again, no answer. She didn’t even look at me this time.

What was going on?

Suddenly, I wanted to take a step closer to her, but I couldn’t. I felt like I was just forced there and just stare at her while she completely ignored me. I heard a small knock on the door, then a creaking of a door opening.

My father had walked in the room. “I’m back, honey.” He smiled at my mother, kissing her on her forehead. My mother smiled back, and held his hand.

“Look at our daughter.” She whispered to him leading him to the baby girl’s crib. They both looked over the crib, admiring the baby’s sleeping face.
“Mom. Dad.” I called out again. No answer or movement.

I couldn’t even walk to try to turn them around. I felt like my body is dead.
“She’s so beautiful.” My father whispered to my mother, not breaking contact with the baby girl who was still sleeping. Small cooing was coming from her crib.

My mother slowly turned to my father, still smiling. “What does her name actually mean, Ilhoon-ah?” She asked him.

My eyebrows furrowed. What did she mean what the baby’s name meant? Every name had a meaning, except for mine which I could never figure out. My father never wanted to tell me.
“Yeobo, you know I can’t tell you. You’re human, and humans are forbidden to know or understand the Xiq language.” He said in a regretful tone. It seemed like he hated to know things that my mother didn’t.

My mom sighed, then looked back at the sleeping baby girl in the crib.
“I know, I know. I’m just scared of her growing up.”
“You don’t have to tell her what you have been telling her all this time while she sleeps, you know.” My  father reassured her, but my mother still said what she was going to say.

“Rinka, when you grow up,  you will fall in love with two boys, but be very careful about who you choose, because one will end up to hurt you very badly.”

My mind fluttered around the insides of my head, making me awfully dizzy. I needed to know, I needed to know. She would have to tell me! I don’t want to end up falling for the wrong person!
“Mom, which one will hurt me?!” I shouted to her desperately.

Again, no answer.
