Chapter 9

Fragments

After the concert they all tried returning back to their lives but they all knew that it was impossible to get over that interaction. She, whose dream as a fan finally came true; she had seen them live. But there was more to those feelings that she couldn’t explain and stopped wondering. They who had been holding back these five years of not seeing her, finally they were able to get a glimpse of her. He was so happy he couldn’t remove the smile that was like cemented on his face.

Little did they know, those feelings were about to go further, their worlds couldn’t stay separated out any longer, their lives couldn’t deny that they were bound together, it had waited for too long. This game of her not knowing about them had been going on for a while already. It had to be stopped.

She was on her way home, her ipod was on shuffle with FT Island songs and she was totally oblivious to her surroundings. The sun was just setting and the weather was chilly because of the snow. She rejected Jun today when he offered her a ride home, saying she wanted to walk alone. He then asked if he could walk her home and again she refused. She was thinking about random things and she was almost home, walking that familiar empty street.

Suddenly a strong wind blew which made her feel colder than she already was. Before she could even react, the wind disappeared. She continued walking but suddenly stopped when a small girl appeared in front of her. She was a beauty; her hair was long, it went down to her ankles, it was jet black and straight like hers but despite her stunning features she got scared when she looked into her eyes. They were empty and cold and lifeless and she couldn’t help but shiver.

“What’s wrong? Have you not seen a demon before?” The little girl said to her, her voice was mocking and high, it felt like she strained her ears with just a few words. She was frozen in place, too petrified to react.

“Demon?” Seol thought.

“Why yes.” She answered, her tone turned into something close to that of chirping. “DEMONS!” She snarled at Seol. Her eyes turned red, her hands turned into claws. The girl demon was about to grab her neck and all Seol could do was close her eyes. But nothing happened, instead she heard sounds like that of swords clashing and her eyes widened in surprise when she saw what stopped her from attacking.

“I’m afraid that’s as far as you go.” Adriel said to the other demon. Seol was confused, not sure if she should believe what she was seeing. “Seol run home! Quick!” Adriel ordered her.

She just did what she got told and ran home. She was so shocked she didn’t know what to do. She stopped running when she realized Adriel was stopping that demon and that she could be hurt. She went back to her little sister not knowing exactly how she could help. When she got back she saw Adriel fighting, casting out a thunder spell but she missed the enemy. Adriel saw Seol coming back and this got her distracted.

“Seol! I told you to get back home! You’ll be—“ Her words were cut off when the other demon took her by surprise and slashed her back with her claws. Seol was standing there in horror as she watched Adriel’s blood trickle on the ground.

“ADRIEL!!” She screamed and right there and then her butler/dad in the human world came to help Adriel.

“I’m sorry for doing this to you my lady.” Her mother/ head maid suddenly appeared in front of her and the next thing she felt was her dozing off to sleep.

When she opened her eyes again she was back in her room and she could hear murmurs around her. Her eyes shot open when she remembered what happened to Adriel.

“ADRIEL!!” She screamed as she jumped out of bed. When she opened her eyes, Adriel, her parents/ butler and head maid were all in her room and they looked at her immediately when she shouted.

“I’m here Seol. I’m here.” Adriel rushed to her side and Seol looked up for her wound at her back.

“Are you okay Adriel?” She started to tremble, her voice was shaky.

“I’m fine, I’m fine no need to worry and besides she was weak I only got distracted so she got me.” She said trying to reassure her and that was when Seol remembered the face of the demon girl.

“WHAT IS HAPPENING ADRIEL? WHAT WAS THAT THAT ATTACKED US? WHAT? WH—“ She started tearing up, panic overcoming her senses.

“Ssshh..Ssshh.. Everything is okay now, calm down calm down, we will explain it all to you.” She hugged her as she tried to hush her cries. Seol held her tightly and cried even more. Adriel let her cry for a while and after a few minutes her sobs died down. She was in the middle of calming down when a portal opened through her mirror. People, or rather, demons came out from it and it closed down immediately when six of them stepped out from it. Seol noticed that there were more people now than before and she slowly turned around only to be left more puzzled with what she saw; FT Island and their manager inside her bedroom.

All eyes were on Seol now and Adriel let go of her slowly. The head maid, the butler and Adriel all kneeled down in front of the demon prince. He gave them a signal to stand up and they obeyed. Adriel soon went to Minhwan’s side after. Seol was so confused she didn’t even know what to feel right now. She had so many questions she didn’t know where to start but before she could even open , Jaejin was already besides her looking at her with kind gentle eyes.

“Why are you crying?” He asked as he removed a tear from her eye with his finger. She was taken aback by his actions and her face unconsciously went red. She was so puzzled she wasn’t able to respond.

“Now, now, control yourself. We don’t want to scare her off.” Jonghun reminded Jaejin but he didn’t leave Seol’s side. “We know you have tons of questions going on inside your head right now we’ll explain it all to you in a little while but for now, Bast and Diriel is this place safe?” The prince turned to the head maid and butler.

“Yes my prince. Diriel made a surveillance around the whole area which is safe as of now, and I have strengthened the anti-demon barrier as well.” Bast, the head maid replied.

“Very well then, shall we start the explaining?” Jonghun then turned to Seol who couldn’t speak because Jaejin was beside her and she was overwhelmed by his presence. The prince sighed upon noticing this. “Let’s start with Jaejin then.” He began and Seol looked at him and looked back to Jaejin who was still staring at her. “Lee Jaejin is your boy friend.” He blurted out as if it was a simple matter.

“WHAT?!” She yelled and they all couldn’t help but let out a chuckle at her reaction. She looked back at Jaejin, waiting for him to confirm it, her heart was starting to beat faster and faster.

“What he said is true, though you may not remember it.” Jaejin said gently and was about to reach for her but she moved away like a sort of reflex. Jaejin dropped his hand and sighed, his patience was running out. He just wanted to hold her so badly.

“Someone please start explaining.” She begged to them and all Jaejin could do was leave her side and returned to his friends.

“As I said earlier Lee Jaejin is your boyfriend.” Jonghun continued.

“But ho—“ Seol was about to ask again but she was silenced by Jonghun’s hand.

“Just let me do the talking first and you can ask your questions after.” She nodded and lent her ears to the prince. “As you can see, we’re all not from this world, including the one that attacked you earlier and even YOU.”

“Me?”

“We’re demons. Apparently all this explanation wouldn’t be necessary if you have your memory back but we can’t do that. Well that’s another story, let me give you the basics first. Why don’t we introduce ourselves to her? That would be easier.” He signaled for Diriel to start.

“My lady, I am your butler who has been serving your house since your father’s time.”

“And I’m the head maid of your house, welcome back my Lady.” Her two servants bowed to her. She waited for the rest of the introductions instead and kept herself from asking any questions, though she was dying to ask right now.

“I’m FT Island’s manager and the assigned demon by the council to watch over these five demons.” Their manager bowed to her as well and Adriel who was beside him was fidgeting, not really sure how to introduce herself. Minhwan then squeezed her hand and smiled, reassuring her that Seol would still like her even though they weren’t blood sisters.

“Well, I’m not really your sister but I’m something close to that back in the underworld. That’s why I took this role.” Adriel approached Seol. She was disappointed to hear that but at the same time relieved that she was still someone close to her.

“Well I’m Minhwan, of course you know that already. I’m actually Adriel’s boyfriend.” He said shyly and started smiling. “I’m also not your brother by blood but you treat me like one back in the underworld.” He smiled to her and as much as she wanted to react she waited for all of their introduction.

“Just someone who is annoying.” They all laughed at Hongki’s introduction, making the air in the room lighter than before. “What? It is true! She calls me annoying more often than she calls me a friend!” He justified himself and they laughed at him again.

“I’m Seunghyun.” Seunghyun said nervously, unsure of what to say next. “I’m friends with them and... you are my best friend.” He said and she nodded her head. He couldn’t say “Hi, I’m Seunghyun and I have one sided love for you.” So he just kept the introduction that way.

“I..uuhh.. Like he said,” Jaejin pointed to Jonghun. He kept his introduction short, saving it for later when she was a little comfortable around them. He hated the fact that Seol moved away from his touch so he just had to bear a little more.

“And I’m the Prince of the underworld who happens to be your friend also.” Jonghun said but he didn’t let Seol to get her chance to ask questions yet. “So now that you know our relationship with you, I’ll tell more about you.” His voice turned serious and his presence was enough to quiet down the place. “You are Lady Seol, the successor your family’s house. You’re also a high demon like the rest of FT Island and Adriel, meaning you have a high level in the society of the underworld. You also happened to be known as the “keeper””, Jonghun went on. “It means that you hold a power so great that it could either destroy or help build worlds. Sadly, there are people after this power and they are after you.” He pointed to her and continued explaining. “Five years ago, you and Jaejin made a decision to give up your memories and lock your demon powers as well to go in hiding into the human world until we are able to track down who is or are after you. We also went to the demon world to watch over you and at the same time investigate in peace, since demons have limited access to the human world. Your memories are all locked up here in this book.” He then showed a supposed to be book but all of the pages were gone except for the outer covering. “As you can see, it’s empty and the pages are gone. Someone tampered it and ruined the spell that you cast on it five years ago. We tried restoring but as expected, it was a failure. Magic is another complicated matter but to shorten things, you are the one who made this book so you are the only one who can restore it as well. We don’t know what magic was used to be able to tamper it. We are assuming it was strong enough to mess with a keeper’s power but not strong enough to ruin it.” Jonghun then heaved out a sigh from all the explaining he just did. “All these explaining would have been unnecessary if that someone didn’t mess with your memory book.” He said with total annoyance. Their plan five years ago was all going down the drain as of the moment.

She was too overwhelmed with the things he said to her. She couldn’t seem to process everything but one thing was clear to her, SHE LOST HER MEMORIES and they didn’t know how to bring them back. She was even too confused to speak and she just stared at them trying to let everything sink in.

“Do you guys mind giving us a moment?” Jaejin asked them. He couldn’t stay put any further, knowing that everything was a shock for her right now. He had to do something and his instincts as a lover told him that.

“Better give her back her demon abilities as well.” Jonghun said to Jaejin. Jaejin looked back at Seol’s dazed figure and felt unsure.

“Don’t you think it’s too early for that?” He tried reasoning out.

“It’s for her own safety. We can never tell when the enemies will strike again.” Jaejin knew he was right and as much as he wanted to say, “I’ll protect her” he wasn’t sure if he could be with her 24/7.

“Just do it Hyung and don’t do anything unnecessary that will scare her away. Okay?” Seunghyun reminded him as they all went out of the room.

“Okay, I promise.” He reassured him and Seunghyun saw her looking at him.

“Hyung will help you understand better, don’t worry.” He said and smiled to her.

“Thank you.” She smiled back to him and Seunghyun blushed with that. Jaejin had to push him out of the door just so he would leave.

The two of them were now left alone in her room. The once crowded room was suddenly silenced. Jaejin was not sure how to approach her so he sat on the chair across her bed, keeping a considerable distance between them. Though he felt lonely by doing it, he had to bear a little more.

“You can ask anything you want and I’ll answer it.” Jaejin said to her and smiled gently.

She was suddenly feeling embarrassed about the thought that the two of them were now alone in her room. She felt her cheeks blushing, her pulse racing. She took a pillow and hugged it before asking.

“Why are you so far away though?” She asked shyly.

“I just don’t want to scare you.” He admitted.

“I’m not scared of you though… Just overwhelmed with everything.” She hugged her pillow tighter when she remembered everything that had been just said to her.

Jaejin noticed that her uneasiness was not because of him so he decided to push his luck to get nearer to her, after all the next truths would be too hard for her to bear. “Can I move closer?” He asked. She was nervous about the thought of Jaejin being so close but she admitted that she wanted to be near him. She slowly nodded her head and waited for him to come to her side. “Now, what is it that you want to ask?” He asked her again, this time, he was only a few inches away from her.

“Where’s my real family?” She asked, without looking at Jaejin, afraid that she might not like what she would be hearing next since something inside her was telling her it was going to be bad.

“You’re an only child Seol so you don’t have siblings. As for your parents,” Jaejin paused and she looked at him and he saw his sad eyes. She didn’t remove her gaze off him this time and waited for him to continue. “Your parents, they were… murdered by those demons.”

“That are after me?” She asked and he nodded. She was starting to feel the pain, anger, emotions were all filling her up at that moment. She looked away and buried her face on the pillow she was hugging. Jaejin wanted to hold her in his arms and comfort her but he knew it was too early for that.

“Your parents are great demons Seol. It just so happened that we are up against something strong. But I promised you, years ago, that we will find out who is behind this.”

Her anger was overflowing. She suddenly felt as if she remembered all the emotions she forgot these five years. She stopped crying when she realized there was something she could do about her parents’ death. She immediately faced Jaejin with eager eyes. “Is there any way I could get my memory back?” Seol asked impatiently. “I know I’m the only one who can bring it back but I don’t have powers like you.”

“About that,” Jaejin paused and hesitated if it was really a good time for her to have her powers back.

“What?”

“You still have your demon powers. It’s just locked up.”

“How?”

“The two of us sealed it five years ago.”

“Let’s unseal it then.” She was about to stand up but he stopped her hand and pulled her down. “What? Why are you stopping me? Let’s go unseal it.” She said impatiently but Jaejin was still holding her and she cannot move an inch.

“Are you willing to kiss me though?” Jaejin suddenly asked her and she felt herself melting just from the thought of it. Her jaw dropped open, unsure of why he brought it up right now. “Don’t get me wrong, I really want to kiss you and all that but I’m asking you this right now because the ritual involves a kiss.” Jaejin explained, avoiding her gaze. He was blushing just by admitting his true feelings and at the same time the ritual.

“Oh,” She let out and just like him she suddenly blushed. “If.. if that’s necessary then.. I guess.. there’s no problem.” She said trying to act cool with it and all Jaejin could do was obey her wish.

“Wait for me here, I’ll go get the things needed for the ritual.” Jaejin went out and grabbed some candles. When he got back to her room, he started making a circle with the candle wax. He then drew a reversed five-pointed star inside of it, with the use of melted candle wax as well; making a pentagram as a result. “Are you ready?” Jaejin then turned to Seol who was watching the whole time and she nodded instantly to his question. He held out his hand for her to take, she took it and stepped into the diagram with him. “You just have to repeat the words I say but before that we need your blood.”

“Blood?” She asked wondering how much would be needed.

“Don’t worry, just a drop or two will suffice.” He answered her, as if reading her mind. “Now give me your finger.” She gave him her hand and he pricked it softly with a needle. She was a little bit startled from the sudden sting and he squeezed it a little till her blood dropped on the center of diagram. After the blood reached the floor, he took her finger into his lips and the excess blood. She was taken aback by his actions and she couldn’t hide the heat rushing in her cheeks right now, knowing that those same lips will be on her own in a few more minutes.

“I think it stopped bleeding already. Thank you.” She said shyly as she slowly removed her fingers from his lips.

“This is also part of the ritual.” Jaejin winked at her and she just blushed even more. “Now repeat the words I say, okay?” She nodded and Jaejin began chanting.

“Through the dark moon I call thee,”

~through the dark moon I call thee,

“under the spell casted for one to be unfree”

~ under the spell casted for one to be unfree

“Hear thy voice, thy call,”

~ Hear thy voice, thy call,

“wake up from the slumber the inner me,”

~ wake up from the slumber the inner me,

“and with a kiss, thee was sealed,”

~ and with a kiss, thee was sealed,

“and with a kiss ,thee will also be released.”

~ and with a kiss, thee will also be released.

Seol repeated each phrase after him and as each phrase was said, the dark aura around her was getting bigger and bigger. And with the last line, just like the spell said, Jaejin leaned in his lips that had her blood on it and pressed it on her lips. Her eyes were closed and she felt the softness of it on her. After the contact was made, she felt something inside of her burn, as if something rushed in inside of her. She slowly opened her eyes when he broke the kiss.

“Welcome back, Lady Seol.” Jaejin kneeled down in front of her instantly when he saw her eyes giving that sharp stare of a high demon. Her presence was overwhelming; she had been awakened.

“What are you kneeling down for though?”

“My lady is back.” He took her hand and stood up before kissing it, amused by the fact that at least she was back.

“You still have a lot of answering to do.”

“I shall answer anything you ask.”
