Chapter 28

Fragments

While Jaejin and Seol were running in circles with the teleportation spell to rub off the enemies, they managed to lose them when Jaejin opened up one of his strongest spaces. The room was dimly lighted and cold. It had not been used in a while. But the space was enough to protect them for the mean time, how long? That they didn’t have an answer.

Seol was sitting on the chair, with her knees up to her chin as she hugged them. She wasn’t sure if it was because of the coldness of the room or because of the fear she was feeling. Her instincts were telling her, things would be getting uglier soon. The thought of anyone from her friends would get hurt was enough to send shivers to her spine.

She already lost her family. If she loses any of her friends soon, she wouldn’t be able to keep up with everything. But what feared her most was the guy walking around the room, trying to warm up the room for her as he lighted candles and intensified the fire place. She felt a tiny pang in her chest with the thought of it. If she loses him it would be actually the end of her.

She was busy with her thoughts that she didn’t realize that a tear managed to escape from her eye until Jaejin wiped them away for her. He then took her into an embrace and she held on to him firmly and started shaking, as if her fear was no longer a secret. Her feelings always fail to hide themselves when Jaejin is around. His mere presence was enough for her to give up all pretenses and feel no shame about it.

“You have me. I won’t let anyone hurt you.” As if he heard her worries, he whispered to her but she only shook her head and snuggled in closer as if she wasn’t already close enough to him.

“That’s what I’m afraid of.” She began saying. “I’m so afraid..so afraid to lose any of you. So scared to lose you.” She grabbed his shirt and squeezed it tighter, as if she had no intentions of letting go of him.

He just chuckled. Seol looked at him in surprise, half-annoyed, half pissed. Why was he chuckling in such moment? “Are you forgetting who I am back in the underworld my love?” He boasted and Seol jast gave him a soft slap and got back on snuggling to him.

Jaejin was actually worried himself but he didn’t want her to get more worried than she already was. So he reassured her, hoping this would lessen the burden she was feeling. Like her, if he loses her, it would be the end of him. He would do anything for her.

“By the way, I think it’s time for you have this back.” Jaejin then put a locket around her neck, the last gift he gave her before her memories were lost. Seol pulled back from him and took the locket in her hands, examining the features of it. “Do you remember what I told you about that locket?” Jaejin asked and she remained quiet while continuing examining the locket as she tried recalling from a few years back. “This locket has been passed on from generations to generations to the first sons of our family. The mothers would give it to their sons if they reach the right age to marry already.” He began saying and suddenly all was clear to Seol now. Everything was coming back to her clearly.

“Wearing this locket means, I’m engaged to the heir of the family.” She whispered and smiled to him softly. He nodded softly and gave him a tender a kiss on the lips.

Their lips stayed together for a few seconds, both afraid that the kiss might be their last but they were both pleading in their hearts, let them be together longer. Neither wanted to be separated. Separating for them was equivalent to dying. It was just too much of a thought.

When they moved away from each other’s kiss, both had tears in their eyes and all they could do was embrace each other, savoring the moment until they can. They knew, they couldn’t hide forever.

“Did you find the keeper?” The low voice was coming from a man whose hair was brushed up that goes down his neck. His nose was pointed perfectly, his face was like engraved and the maker took its time perfecting it. His jaw, his lips, his pointy ears gave him away though, and most of all his ice cold stare.

“Yes my lord.” An underling answered him quickly and he sat up and patted the girl next to her who was staring blankly at thin air as she stabbed the doll in her hands over and over again.

“My dear doll, it’s time.” He whispered to her and she stood up, still looking blankly in thin air and she clenched the doll she was holding and it turned into ashes in a matter of seconds as she got it engulfed in a flame.

Slowly, she walked and followed the other demons getting inside a hole they made. At the back, he was following her slowly with a smirk on his lips. He had waited for this day for far too long.

The couple was on each other’s arms as they slept soundly on the bed. Both got tired from worrying too much until they both fell asleep. Even in their sleep, they were still holding each other, making sure they can still clearly feel the presence of the other.

It wasn’t long before their peace was broken. Jaejin sat up instantly when he felt someone trying to break in his space. Seol woke up as well and looked at Jaejin with a worried look on his face. He took this as a sign that the thing they feared of was finally here. Before the two of them could even react further, the wall across them was shattered and demons were already surrounding them.

Jaejin stood up in front of Seol and began firing spells at the demons. Seol chanted a summoning spell and Comet came into the rescue in a hurry, helping Jaejin fight. She stood up as well and fought hand in hand with Jaejin. It didn’t take them much effort before the cost was clear. Comet then came back flying to its master’s shoulders. The phoenix was rubbing its head to its master’s cheek as if comforting her and she just patted it for doing a good job.

From the hole made on the wall, they heard someone clapping, as if praising them for annihilating a number of demons. It was followed then by a loud chuckle as their image appeared from the shadows.

“Jezebel,” Jaejin whispered in disbelief as her image emerge from the darkness.

“Uncle…..” Seol said and Jaejin looked back at her, confused with what she called the man Jezebel was with. “Uncle Loki.” She completed her sentence, her eyes wide opened. Disbelief was clear to her face.

That was when Jaejin realized what Seol meant by Uncle and the name itself, Loki. He can’t be mistaken. That name was so famous in the underworld, everyone who would hear that name couldn’t help but tremble in fear. But what he couldn’t understand was that Seol called him, “uncle.”

“Ahh..isn’t this a heart warming reunion my favorite niece?” His tone was mocking and he was completely amused by the confusion the two young demons were showing to him.

“But you’re dead,” She mumbled in horror as she remembered the incident decades ago.

He laughed out harder as if mocking every inch of her existence. “I’m not called the shape-shifter or the trickster and so on and so fort for nothing. My lovely niece, you are smart and indeed strong but you are still far..faaar from you dear uncle.” His voice was threatening and Jaejin went up in front of her in instinct. “Aaahh..isn’t this cute? The heir of one of the strongest clans in the demon world is here as well. But I’m afraid you’ve issues to settle with my favorite doll young lad.” He pointed to Jezebel beside him and Jaejin looked at her but her face was blank as she stared in nothingness.

“What did you do to Jezebel?” Jaejin snarled but again, he only got another insulting laugh.

“Me?” He laughed again. “I’m afraid, YOU did this to her.” He accused her and he removed his gaze from her. “I saw her one night crying alone in the forest and I asked her why she was crying and she said because the guy she loves was in love with someone else. And then I kept her with me. I was surprised when I found out that you were sleeping with her and then just throwing her like a garbage when you got tired of her.”

“You’re wrong.” Seol defended Jaejin. It wasn’t completely wrong but not completely right either but she knew Jaejin took enough pain because of the mistake he did.

“And look at you my beautiful niece, defending someone like him.”

“You have no rights to insult him my dear uncle. You were long gone before I even met him.”

“Oh, but I was close by. Very very close.” He then grinned and Seol and Jaejin couldn’t help but shivered from it. It was such an aura so fearful they couldn’t even move.

“What do you want?” Seol asked in an annoyed tone despite the fear she was feeling.

“Oh, I think you know very well what I am after right? If you weren’t so stubborn in the first place, our family would’ve still been alive right now.” He blamed her and she was frozen from her place from what she heard. No one blamed her for her family’s extinction but this was the first time someone actually said that to her face. All the painful memory was rushing in back to her.

“I hate to be disrespectful to the uncle of my future wife but CAN YOU NOT BLAME SEOL FOR THE THINGS YOU DID?” Jaejin snarled as he pulled Seol behind her.

“Youngsters these days, gutsty..very gutsy.. I regret to inform you that your “future wife” will be going with me.”

“I don’t think so.”

Saying that, Jaejin immediately fired a spell back at Loki. He nudged it perfectly well and Jaejin was still in a protective position, Seol behind her.

“This is too risky.” Seol warned Jaejin.

“I know but I can’t just hand you over to him.”

“But you might get killed!”

“I’d rather die than give you to anyone.”

He argued with her. His look to her was stubborn and Seol knew that there wasn’t anything she could say that could make Jaejin let this fight off but she was afraid. She was afraid of what could happen to him especially when he said he would rather die. She knew how much he meant those words.

“Then let me at least fight with you.” She said stubbornly as well and he thought for a few seconds and nodded.

“Isn’t this touching? Lovers fighting together? Touching, very touching indeed. I’m afraid Shakespeare would love the ending of this story as well.” He paused as they looked at him. “Such tragedy is loved.”

With one final warning, Jaejin and Seol fired in synchronization but Jezebel just wiped their spell off with one hand. Both were astonished by what she did and they looked back at each other and thought of the next things to do.

Seol and Jaejin separated; Jaejin went to the right and Seol to the left as they mumbled spells they would fire off soon. Loki stayed still and watched the two started their attacks but he stayed in the defensive and let the two do all the attacking and Jezebel all the shielding on her own.

“Do you think you can defeat me with such lame attacks?” Loki mocked them as Seol and Jaejin’s spell was again blocked by him.

“No, that’s why we’re going for her.” Seol then fired thunder to Jezebel and she was caught off guard from the attack. She was sent flying to the wall and her body hit violently against the wall and she slipped down on the floor, blood gushing out from her.

“Didn’t know you’re capable of hurting others.” Loki said in a monotone as if his favorite doll wasn’t battling life and death right now.

“I hate to say this but we have the same blood flowing in our veins. And besides, if we finish you off quickly I can still heal her.” She mocked him as she and Jaejin backed away and distanced theirselves from him.

“How ruthless,” He said in a totally amused tone and Seol got pissed at him.

“Let’s end the chitchat and do catching up later, shall we?” Jaejin said rather impatiently as he alone, rushed to Loki, preparing to fire yet another spell.

“Jaejin!” Seol yelled but it was too late.

As soon as Jaejin fired to Loki, Loki just up all the energy he fired and was about to blast it back to Jaejin.

“What in the world?” Jaejin said in disbelief as he realized what happened. The spell he fired a few seconds ago was being fired back at him and he was frozen in his place in disbelief.

“Jaaaeejiiinn!!” Seol screamed in panic and even before Jaejin could finally react to her scream, the spell was only a few inches away from him.

But even before the spell touched him, a body came in cover and pushed him away from the spell’s aim. “I love you.” The bloody image whispered as it disappeared when the spell hit her. A smile managed still to form on her lips before she disintegrated into complete nothingness.

“Jaejin!!!” Seol came running to Jaejin’s side, his left arm got hit by the spell. His eyes were still glued at the now empty space where he was standing just a few minutes ago and the image of Jezebel completely disappeared.

“Jezebel,” Jaejin whispered as Seol healed Jaejin’s left arm. She didn’t react when he heard him whisper her name. It wasn’t right to feel jealous she knew that but she couldn’t help it. After all, even when she was already at the verge of death and sanity, she still managed to throw herself and take the death blow for Jaejin. At least one last time, she wouldn’t deny her love for Jaejin. In the end, she was just someone who got consumed by love and hatred at the same time.

“Now look what you did to my favorite doll. She’s nowhere to be found.” Loki yet again, mocked them.

“Can you stop acting like a kid and own up for the things you did?” Seol argued back to him.

“But this wouldn’t have happened if you just went with me decades ago.” He began saying and Seol thought back of the past of what he was trying to say but she was just so lost. “Why don’t I remind you?” Loki said in impatience as he raised his hand and ready to flick a memory spell in Seol’s head.

“Get away from her!” Jaejin yelled and fired a spell at Loki. This time, the spell got him. He got hit in his chest but he was quick enough to lessen the damage the spell could’ve caused him.

“You annoying little brat. This is a family issue, I don’t need you here.” And with one flick of a finger, Jaejin was sent flying to the wall across the room, his body hitting the wall violently, breaking bones in the process.

“JAEJIN!!” Seol cried hysterically as she watched him flew across the room and weakly dropped on the ground. She made a run for Jaejin but even before she could, Loki was already next to Jaejin, his hand pointing to Jaejin.

“If you love him so much, you will be a good niece and obey your uncle.” He threatened and Jaejin looked up at Seol, shaking his head.

“Run Seol. Don’t think of me. Run.” He struggled to get those words out as he coughed out some blood. Loki then stepped on his body and Jaejin let out a cry.

“Stop!” Seol cried to Loki in desperation. Tears were now falling down her cheeks as he watched Jaejin’s broken body get stepped on. “If..if I go with you..will you promise to leave them alone?” She asked him but she was fearful of what he could do with her but as of now she was more scared of losing Jaejin than herself. She’d rather die than live in a world without Jaejin.

“But of course my dear. Didn’t I tell you over and over again? This wouldn’t have happened if you go with me. Are you ready to leave now?” He then removed his foot on Jaejin when he saw her nod.

“Seol, no. Don’t go with him.” Jaejin pleaded but his body was too weak to even struggle. As much as his mind was telling him to stand up he couldn’t. He watched Loki come nearer to Seol and all she could do was look back at Jaejin with tears falling.

“Let’s go.” Loki then put his hand on Seol’s shoulder and guided her towards the hole.

Seol walked with him and she looked back one last time to Jaejin before completely leaving. “I love you.” She said to him and all Jaejin could do was cry in desperation, cry in pain, cry in anxiousness, cry because she was gone.

If he would be able to get her back, that was another question.
