That's Not Quite What I Expected...
Capturing His HeartAs he walked with me from table to table at registration, I could see with my peripheral vision that Chansung had been staring at my face whenever I spoke to the faculty members that welcomed me to my new school. I could feel my face heating up. Was there something on my face? Oh God. There probably is.
As the woman working at the schedule table shuffled through the piles of schedules, I turn my attention towards him. I catch his eyes. I expected him to tell me that there's a huge booger smudged across my face, but instead he just smiled-- staring more intensely into my eyes. Unable to handle the intensity of the moment, I looked away, pretending that I received a text.
Suddenly I remember Junho-- oh dear. I forgot about Junho...
I look around me, but he was nowhere in sight. Good thing I pulled out my phone, isn't it? Quickly, I texted Junho asking him where he went. Hopefully he's not too mad that I just ditched him like this... He should be able to understand.
As soon as the woman working at the counter handed me my schedule, Chansung and I walked to the dining hall. He was still looking at me. What am I supposed to do? Call him out on it?
"Is there something on my face?" I asked quickly, hoping he'd say no
"yeah. There's a big black ink line on your cheek. I was hoping you'd see from the mirror on the back of your phone."
My heart started beating faster. I'm an idiot. In complete shock I pulled out my phone to check. There was nothing. I looked back at him and glared. Are you kidding me?
He started giggling like a giddy school-boy. "Just kidding, babo"
Without saying a word I walked faster away from him towards the dining hall.
"Wait!! I was kidding!" He ran after me. "Please don't be mad."
For some reason, it felt as if this wasn't the first time I've hung out with him before. The way he acted as if we'd known each other for ages seemed so unreal.
He ran up in front of me to stop me in my tracks. I looked up at him. He's so good looking. I can't stay mad at this guy, but I definitely can't let him off this easily. I think I'll just pretend to be mad at him. I shot him a mean look, but just as I tried to get away from him again, I couldn't help but to smile a little.
"So you're not mad at me. For a second there, I thought you were going to get all sensitive," he smiled back at me.
"Hey. I am still a little mad. a little. very little... okay fine not at all," I tried to argue... but it was impossible to keep the truth from those puppy eyes.
As we walked through the doors to the dining hall, I bumped someone. Okay, I was distracted. He's just... so good looking. I'll stop repeating myself once he puts a paper bag over his face.. which is pretty much never. Well anyways. I looked up to apologize to whomever I just bumped into. Oh god. It was Taecyeon.
Instead of apologizing, I just looked at him.
"Oh, it's you," he sneered.
Before he could say anything else I walked away. I could hear Chansung apologizing for me, and truthfully, I felt guilty for leaving Chansung to do that.
"Hey, are you okay?" his warm concerned voice made me want to kill myself. There need to be more people like him in the world.
"Yeah, I'm okay, I guess. I don't know how well I'll be able to survive here, though."
"That guy? pfft. Don't even give it a second thought. He's in my dorm. No one likes him. Just forget about him," he comforted. "Don't let him ruin your day."
"It's a little late for that..."
"Don't be such a downer. Come on. Let's get some lunch. You'll feel better"
I'm glad. I think I've found someone to completely depend on without even trying. But just as we sat down to eat, an extremely pretty and skinny girl walks over to our table.
"Hey Chansung!" She exclaims loudly in her nasally voice.
"Hey, Jess." He replies.
"How are you settling in? I just moved all my things to my room. It's SUCH a hassle. Do you think you can help me?" She said in a whiz. I'm pretty sure she didn't even breathe in that sentence.
"Can I finish eating lunch first?"
"Yeah. Of course. I guess I'll see you later then!" She gets up and leaves quickly... she didn't even acknowledge the fact that I was blatantly sitting next to him.
He turns towards me, "That's Jessica. I just met her yesterday and she's already demanding that I help her with her chores." He rolled his eyes. "But she's really pretty. I'm hoping it'll go somewhere, too."
Great. He just wants to be friends with me.
I smiled and gulped down my water.
I feel my phone vibrate, signifying that I received a text.
It said: "It's fine, I didn't really care. You seemed really happy, though. Are you still with him? and I was wondering if you wanted to hang out tonight"
I wrote: "Yeah, I am. I'm up for hanging out, too."
As I put my phone away, I looked at the plates and plates that Chansung had just swept clean of food. I guess... he likes to eat.
"I think I should go help Jessica with her things now," he said, looking as if he was about to pass out from a food coma.
"You know you don't have to help her if you don't want to," I looked at him with concern.
"It's okay. She seems like a nice girl. I think she lives in your dorm too. Actually-- come to think of it, I think she's a new sophomore like you."
"mmhmm. I feel like I've seen her somewhere. Well I guess you can't get into my dorm without a keycard. I'll let you in. I have tons of unpacking to do too."
He followed me into my dorm, up the stairs. To my surprise, Jessica lived in the room next to mine.
He chuckled, "if you need help with your unpacking, I can help you too."
"It's okay. You need to go and make a good impression. Go ahead." I smiled back at him.
He looked a little uneasy, but I'm sure it was only because he felt guilty for suddenly ditching me.
And the rest of the afternoon lazed by just like that. Nothing special. I guess I expected a little too much out of this afternoon, didn't I?
