He's Really Not that Bad
Capturing His Heart
Time flew as I stayed in my room unpacking and chatting with Nicole. Since it is only the fall season, and the sun doesn't set as early as it does in the Winter, we were able to grab dinner and sit on the porch, watching the sun set.
Suddenly I hear a phone vibrate. Thinking that it might be Junho confirming that we'd hang out, I took out my phone to check, but before I could even flip it open, I saw Nicole already reading a text that I presume her boyfriend sent her.
"Hey, is it okay if I ditch you?" She asked half-jokingly.
"Well. I mean if you really have to," I joked back.
Just as she was leaving my phone started to ring: I'll be, I'll I'll be, I'll I'll be there, girl~~. Slightly embarrassed my kpop FOB-ness, I quickly picked up my phone.
"hellooo?" I slurred into the microphone
"So do you want to hang out or not?" It was Junho.
"well yeah. I promised, didn't I?"
"Okay, I'll be at the porch in a second. Do you mind if I bring some of my new friends in the dorm?"
"No! Of course not! I want to make some new friends too."
"Good. See you soon."
"Kay"
As I sat in cool air, I stared into the night sky. Without my glasses I could barely see the stars. Yes, I know I should wear my glasses, but I feel like total dork when I do. Plus, they're a pair those hipster glasses that take up half your face when you wear them. The only star that I can always see is the North Star. The sky is extremely clear tonight---
"Yo."
I snapped back to reality. In the darkness I could see an approaching crowd. Oh god, is that Taecyeon I see?
Junho ran up the porch first to greet me. "Sorry, you must've sat here for a while. Blame it on Khun. He was taking forever to get dressed. Oh... you don't know Khun. Right. My mistake." He giggled
So first impressions?
There was one in the crowd who stood out to me besides Taecyeon. He was a lot shorter than Taecyeon, but was just as good looking. They're both as chiseled as one another. For some reason, the height didn't really matter to me that much.
"This is Jaebeom, Tiffany," Junho interrupts my thoughts. "Stop staring," he whispered. He turned towards Jaebeom, "Jaebeom, this is Tiffany."
"Hey wassup, you can call me Jay."
"Hi, It's nice to meet you." I grinned uncontrollably. What is it with this school and cute boys?
"I've heard from Junho that you're new?"
"Yeah, I'm a new sophomore."
"ahh, I'm a new Junior."
"Oh really? So you know Chansung, then?"
"Yeah, we all do. We all live in the same hallway," he motioned his hands in a circle around the group, which had just dispersed to sit on the bench across from the one that I sat on.
The rest of them sat silently, exchanging looks of awkwardness. I can tell. I have a built in awkward moment detector.
"What are your names?" I asked to the general group, hoping to break the ice.
"I'm NichKhun," said the pretty one.
"I'm WooYoung," said the one sitting right next to NichKhun.
"Those two barely ever separate, and they're both new... and just met yesterday," whispered Junho to me.
I shot a side-ward glare towards Junho, then looked back at NichKhun and WooYoung, "it's very nice to meet you both."
Then there was one who seemed more stand-offish than the rest of them. He stood to the side and kept texting on his phone, but when he realized that the duty of breaking the awkward silence was directed towards him, he looked up.
"I'm Junsu."
"It's nice to you meet you," I smiled all the same.
I felt sort of awkward being the only one sitting on my side of the porch. It's like they're avoiding me or something... Even Junho was sitting on their side of the porch. Weirdly enough, they could all fit on the bench that could barely fit five girls from my dorm.
Suddenly, Taecyeon stands up. His sudden movement in the silence caused me to look at him. I caught his eyes and the tension of the calm night rose. I couldn't help but to still feel a little bit hateful towards him for what he had said to me earlier. I looked away not because it was awkward, but because I didn't want him to think I actually cared about him. He walks over to my side of the porch and sits down next to me. I try to scoot away from him without his noticing, but I failed.
"Why are you moving away from me?"
"Uhmm.... I'm not! I'm ju--" I choked on my spit. Greeaaattt. I start hacking and coughing in the opposite direction so that I wouldn't be coughing on him.
"Holy ; are you okay?"
I take a deep breath, "yeah, this happens a lot. Don't worry about me..."
"Can we call truce? I didn't really think before I said that to you earlier."
"Oh. err.. yeah. I totally forgot about that already, but I mean, it wouldn't hurt for me to make another friend." I smiled at him.
"Haha, I guess," he chuckled.
He then goes on to ask me how I know Junho, and I explain to him that we went to the same school previously, and I asked him what grade he was in and he told me that he's a Junior, but was a new Sophomore, like me. He also made sure that I knew that if I had any trouble settling in, that he went through the same so there's no need for worrying. I guess it's nice to have someone to depend on, especially someone who's been through what I will experience. I mean I know I have Junho but I didn't really talk to him much other than in French and Economy last year. Then suddenly he asks me how much I know about kpop. I become all giddy, and spill everything from loving Big Bang to wanting to be like CL from 2NE1.
Suddenly, a cold breeze blew across the porch making goosebumps emerge in my skin. He looks at me and rolls his eyes.
"You should wear more clothes," he preaches.
"What are you, my dad?"
"No, but after this conversation, I feel like you're the little sister that I've always wanted. Wait a sec.”
He rummaged through his backpack and dug out his phone. Instead of asking for my number he simply stared at me, as if to be sending me telepathic messages.
“Err…. I’m guessing you want my number?” I asked in confusion.
“Of course! I’m surprised it took you that long to figure it out… So I guess my dongsaeng isn’t that smart, huh? Maybe you’re not really the little sister I’ve always wanted…”
“Yah. I’m—“
“Did you just say ‘Yah’?”
“ermmm…. Yes?”
He looked at me in silence. Oh god. He’s probably going to start going off about how I need to stop acting Korean.
“You know you’re supposed to use honorifics because I’m older than you, right?”
I giggled out of surprise. “Oh… right,” I said, grinning. “Oppa?”
“Actually… nevermind. I’d rather have you address me as “Yah” rather than ‘Oppa’. I can’t really stand it when girls are so…. Ehh….”
“pretentious? Cutesy?”
“Yeah. Both of those things..”
“Well… before we forget…. My number is 845-789-5555. Got it?”
“Stop acting like you’re older than me.” He scolded whilst trying to stifle a grin.
“Oppa?”
“I’ll stop talking to you?”
“Ugh. Fine. You win…. for now...” This guy actually isn’t half as bad as I thought he was. Plus he’s actually kind of cute. Did Chansung really say that no one likes him? That’s strange. At this rate, I feel like I might develop feelings for him. Seriously, look at his eyes and his chiseled features. He’s so attractive.
“I’ll text you so you have my number… by the way, what should I put you down in my phone as?”
“hmm?”
“Yah! Babo yah. Whenever you’re done daydreaming you can come back to reality and answer me..”
“Oh. Haha. Well…. I mean.. hmm…”
“I’ll just put you down as ‘yo dongsaeng’ in my phone, if that’s fine.”
“Yeah that’s okay… In that case I’ll put you down as “op—‘ I mean… ‘haroboji’?”
“’Haroboji’??? I’m not old enough to be your grandfather… I guess since I put you down as ‘yo dongsaeng’ in my phone you should put me down as ‘oppa’ in your phone then…?”
“I thought—“
“Yeah, whatever just do it.”
I’m sure this guy secretly wants me to call him Oppa. Yeah.. he definitely wants me to do it.
“You guys look good together”
Someone suddenly cuts off our quarrel.
I look to see who. Oh no. It’s Chansung.
“That’s disgusting man.. wait. I didn’t mean it like that…. I meant… that’s like .”
“Hey, Chansung~” I put on a sweeter tone of voice.
Taecyeon immediately shoots me a dirty look. “What do you like that kid or something? Why is your voice suddenly all light and cute?” He whispered to me.
“Did you just call my voice cute? Am I KEEOBDAA?” I whispered back.
“No. You’re a creep.” He says in a louder decibel.
“Hey, since its getting kind of cold out here, I was wondering if you guys wanted to go to the TV room in my dorm. We have food in there!” I suggested.
“Food?” Chansung immediately replied as soon as I finished my sentence.
“Yeah, food” I eye-smiled at him. It works for Tiffany of SNSD… I don’t see why it wouldn’t work for me.
As we walked in through the front door to the TV room, someone breathed into my ear, “it’s so obvious you like him. Stop being so obvious.”
“Shhhh” I put my index finger over my lips. “Don’t tell?”
“Of course I’m not going to tell.”
There was a scary movie playing in the TV room as we hung out. Though the volume was low, I couldn’t help but to pay full attention to the movie, rather than Chansung or Taecyeon, or any of my new friends for that matter. The TV room was set up like this: The couch in the center and a two step amphitheatre behind the couch. The TV sat on a counter in front of the couch and amphitheatre.
“Boo,” A pair of hands grabbed my shoulders from behind.
I turn around and see Chansung flashing a cheeky smile at me. God, you’re gorgeous. He makes his way around the couch to sit next to me. He puts his arm around my shoulder. My face heats up and my heart starts racing again. This boy has way too much control over my heart rate. I look to my right and tilt my head upwards a little, to my surprise he was already staring at me. If the room was a little darker, I would have exploded with unexplainable joy. He smirks a little, probably knowing that I was blushing like crazy.
But just as I rested my head up on his shoulder, Jessica walks in, in nothing but a pair of short sleeping shorts and a big T-shirt that almost completely covered her shorts. Chansung sat up straighter suddenly.
Why do these moments always have to end so abruptly?
