To Save a Life
In Search of MeaningHakyeon rolled to the side, the wolf man landing and skidding into the wall next to him. While the wolf regained his footing, Hakyeon ran around to the other side of the metal table, hoping to put something between him and the beast. The wolf was on his hands and feet again, glaring at him before launching into the air with a snarl. As he clawed over the table, Hakyeon dove underneath back to the side with the counter. He grabbed the syringe without looking back to see if the wolf was coming at him, he knew he was. As soon as the tranquilizer was in his hand, he whirled around and felt a body collide with his, pushing his lower back into the edge of the counter top.
His eyes were closed as he waited for claws and fangs to rip his throat out, but when they never came he slowly peeked through his eyelids. The needle in Hakyeon's hand was buried deep in the wolf man's chest, and the collision forced his thumb to press on the end fitting, emptying its contents into the man's body. He looked into the wolf's eyes as they faded from a vibrant yellow to a dark brown before the man collapsed to the floor, falling into a deep sleep.
Hakyeon exhaled a deep breath he didn't realize he had been holding, and relaxed, leaning on the counter placing a hand over his rapidly beating heart.
That was too close, Hakyeon. Noted: Don't ever wake a sleeping wolf man by touching his face.
When his heart rate returned to normal he looked down at the sleeping man, and noticed that his stitches had come open and the wound was bleeding again. He hesitantly poked the toe of his shoe into the man's side, double checking to make sure he was definitely asleep. Seeing no response, Hakyeon leaned down and lifted the man back up onto the table.
Once again, he pulled on a pair of rubber gloves and grabbed the sewing kit from the counter. He made quick work of removing the bandage and redoing the stitches, keeping his eye on the man's face for any signs of him waking. As he was tying off the last stitch he saw one of the man's eyebrows twitch, and he immediately dropped the sewing materials and bolted to the door. Hakyeon swung the door open, rushed through, and closed it behind his back panting in relief.
"Psst." He heard someone hiss from the lobby, and he turned his head to look through the entryway leading to the larger area. Through the empty frame he could see the end of the front counter, and crouching behind it was a figure of a man.
"Who-" Hakyeon was interrupted by a loud bang coming from outside.
Was that a gun shot?!
Walking into the lobby, he looked down at the stranger and realized there was a second one who looked up at him with a frightened expression. Hakyeon then glanced outside through the large windows, and his blood went cold when he saw two men in black suits walking past with guns raised in their hands. A hand grabbed his wrist, and pulled Hakyeon down to the floor to sit next to the strangers.
"Stay down." The one closest to Hakyeon whispered.
Hakyeon replied, "What the hell is going o-"
BOOM!
Suddenly, the glass of the windows exploded into a shower of shards. The building quaked from the startling noise outside, and the three men covered their heads as glass shards rained down on them. They heard shouting from outside, and there were three more gunshots before another BOOM shook the ground beneath them.
Hakyeon dared to look around the corner of the counter, and through the empty windows he saw that the two men in suits were no longer there. However, three more appeared aiming their pistols down the sidewalk in front of the clinic. They were shouting orders to someone to 'get down' and 'freeze'. In the back of the clinic, he heard a door creak open, and in a blur the figure of the wolf man shot past them, racing across the lobby and soaring through one of the empty windows.

Hongbin's breathing came in heavy pants as he watched the three men approach him and Hyuk who was lying still in his lap. The first two men were lying face down on the pavement a block away in the middle of the street. He kept one hand pressed against the wound on Hyuk's back trying to stop the bleeding. His other hand was raised up in front of him, the center of his palm shining a bright blue light that was beginning to flicker and dim.
, I don't have enough power for another electric pulse.
He felt Hyuk stir a little in his lap, and he lowered his hand as his attention instantly shifted to the other, forgetting about the danger in front of him.
"Hyuk?" Hongbin called to the younger. "Hyukkie, are you with me?"
Hyuk lifted his chin and looked up at Hongbin, fighting to keep his eyelids from drooping. His breathing was shallow, and he winced a little every time he inhaled as if it hurt to expand his lungs.
"Hongbin..." He said almost inaudibly, his voice raspy. "Are you-" His body convulsed as a coughing fit disrupted his sentence, and blood trickled out of the corner of his mouth as he wheezed.
"Don't talk." Hongbin said shakily, looking down at the other with tears in his eyes. "Just breathe." Every time Hyuk's face contorted with pain he felt like someone's fist was reaching into his chest and squeezing the life out of his heart. "You're going to be okay. Just keep breathing."
Hongbin's grip on Hyuk tightened when he heard footsteps coming closer to them. He glared up at the three men, clenching his jaw as he prepared to fight tooth and nail to protect his friend. The armed man closest to them was about to his gun when a body sailed through the window of the building next to them, knocking him to the pavement with a loud crack.
"Leo!" Hongbin cried out in surprise.
The wolf man then leaped up to the second gunman, dodging to the right as he fired the pistol. He grabbed the man's arm and stepped forward to elbow him hard in the temple, knocking him out with a single blow. Holding the unconscious body to his chest as a shield, Leo charged at the last armed man with a vicious growl. Shoving the limp human forward, the third man stumbled as the body's weight collided with him, causing the firearm to slip from his hand. Before the suit could regain his balance Leo stepped around the mess of tangled limbs with incredible speed to stand behind him, grabbing the sides of the man's head. With a hard twist of his hands, a loud sickening crriick was heard as the gunman's neck broke in multiple places, and the two men fell to the ground unmoving.
"What the HELL is going on?!" A shout came from the clinic's front door. Leo looked over his shoulder, and recognized the shorter dark-haired male that was fuming in the doorway.
"Help!" Both heads turned towards the source of the cry.
"Hongbin!" Leo replied with a loud yet soft voice that surprised the vet, but at the sight of a bleeding Hyuk lying in the young man's lap the revelation was instantly forgotten. The two of them rushed to Hongbin's side, Hakyeon placing his hands over Hyuk's wound while Leo examined the other crying male for injuries.
"We need to get him to the hospital," Hakyeon said when he saw how critical the damage was. "Now."
"I have a car."
The three looked up at the brunette emerging from the clinic with a hunched over hoodie-wearing man in to
