The Fall - Jonghyun
In Search of MeaningThe grey truck careened around a corner as they sped away from the single black SUV that chased them from the parking lot. Jonghyun drove well above the speed limit, and ignored the honking of other drivers as he constantly changed lanes in order to gain distance between him and the suits.
"We need to go back, and help the others!" Hyuk exclaimed from the back seat, holding an unconscious Key in his arms to prevent the blonde's limp body from flying all over the place due to Jonghyun's aggressive driving.
Hongbin glanced through the back window, and shook his head when he saw the black SUV gaining speed, "We can't, Hyuk. Not without getting caught."
Hyuk extended his right arm to grab onto Hongbin's, causing the cyborg to look into the younger's pleading eyes.
"Can't you change modes, or something?!" Hyuk asked desperately.
Hongbin's face wrinkled in concentration as he thought through the different modes he coud use, but shook his head again when he realized, "I can't use any of them without hurting innocent people. Cadence is too destructive, and Staccato 's bullets will just bounce off the SUV like the time Leo shot at one."
"Aim for the tires, then!" Hyuk suggested.
"How can I aim for the tires when I can't see them?!" Hongbin shot back, frustrated at the younger for barraging him with questions and at himself for not being able to do anything.
Hyuk grimaced at Hongbin's words, then turned to the front of the vehicle, "Woohyun! Can you use the shotgun?"
Just like Hongbin, Woohyun shook his head in rejection, "No. It's loaded with a buckshot, so it can't be used for long distances. Besides, I only have one round."
"Urgh! God damn it!" Hyuk roared, angrily kicking the back of Jonghyun's seat.
"Hyuk, knock it off! I'm driving!" Jonghyun shouted back at him while keeping his eyes glued to the road.
Hongbin's chest ached as he watched Hyuk visibly deflate in his seat, losing hope for the friends they left behind.
What do I do? What do I do? What do I do?! Hongbin pulled at his own hair as his mind raced to find a solution. Cadence would not only affect the suits, but also the people around them. Staccato won't penetrate their armored vehicle, and I can't get a good aim at the tires because they're driving too erratically. The other modes are useless in a car chase! Ugh, what do I do?!
When he saw the little orange light flash on in the lower right corner of his vision, he almost sighed in relief. He looked at the light, and a message appeared before his eyes.
MODE CHANGE: LEGATO. TO ENGAGE, CURL THE FINGERS.
AIM CAREFULLY. MIND THE ENERGY DRAIN.
-MR. SIMPLE
Hongbin clenched his jaw in determination before he twisted in his seat to ram his elbow into the back window. The glass shattered from the impact, and crystalline shards rained down the back seat and flew into the bed of the pickup truck.
"What are you doing?" Hyuk questioned, alerted by Hongbin's actions. Woohun also turned in his seat to see what the cyborg was up to, while Jonghyun could only afford a brief glance through the rearview mirror before returning his attention to the road.
Ignoring Hyuk's question, Hongbin locked his eyes on the black SUV, which he guessed was somewhere around fifty feet behind them.
"Mode change: Legato." Hyuk's eyes widened at the sound of Hongbin's electronic voice, and hope bloomed within him again.
Just like the time he used Staccato earlier that day, he felt parts shifting mostly in his arms. However, this change felt different. Somehow, it felt like more parts were moved than last time, and all the electricity in his body seemed to flow into his forearms. The crosshairs appeared in the center of his vision, and his focus became sharper, almost seeming to zoom in on his target.
Hongbin stuck his right arm outside the back window, and suddenly all the energy that was gathered in his left arm shifted to his right. He felt the center of his right palm open, and he watched in awe as streaks of blue light pulsed up his forearm towards his hand. As the pulses became more rapid, the energy continued to build up in his palm. When his hand throbbed in pain, and he saw the blue light shining through the back of his hand, he knew it was time to release it.
Looking back at the black SUV, the crosshairs turned red the moment his sight landed on the vehicle. The driver must have realized his intentions, because the SUV suddenly braked. However, the crosshairs remained locked on the target, never wavering for a second.
Taking a deep breath, Hongbin curled his fingers-
BTOOM!
Similar to Cadence, a pulse of energy ejected from Hongbin's hand. But, this time, instead of exploding in a giant wave, the energy remained wound tight in the form of a laser bullet as it soared through the air. True to his aim, Hongbin watched the bullet pierce through the hood of the black SUV like a toothpick through jello, and the vehicle instantly exploded into a raging inferno.
Nearby cars swerved away from the burning wreckage, and luckily the only damage they received was a few scratches from flying debris. Hyuk, Hongbin, and Woohyun watched the scene with wide awestruck eyes as Jonghyun sped away.
"Holy ," Woohyun whispered under h
