Fancy Meeting You Here

“So, you going to explain?” Soo Jin raised an eyebrow at Haneul as she leaned back into the couch and raised an eyebrow at Haneul.

Haneul stared at Soo Jin and could only softly say. “Why are you still giving me a chance?”

Soo Jin seemed to contemplate this for a while then spoke up again, “I don’t know either. It just seems like you have your own side to the story. And I don’t get the whole deal between the Blue Triangle and the IAI.”

“You know about the feud?” Haneul softly enquired.

Soo Jin nodded.

“Do all the other girl know then?”

Soo Jin shook her head. “Only me.”

“Are you and Kevin that close?” Haneul chuckled.

Soo Jin shrugged. “I guess. The U-Kiss boys know too, by the way, so I think it may be awkward for us tomorrow if you go and see them.”

Haneul stared at Soo Jin. “Us?”

“Us.” Soo Jin nodded. “So now explain.”

Haneul felt warming rush of relief flood over her entire body. Maybe Kevin was wrong about Soo Jin being inconsiderate.

------------

“So you’re telling me that 6 years ago a Blue Triangle agent killed Hwayoung’s innocent parents?” Soo Jin raised an eyebrow.

Haneul nodded. “That is what Hwayoung told me happened and I’m sure everyone trusts her a whole lot more than me right now.” Haneul bitterly said.

“That’s not true.” Soo Jin said as she looked at her nails, “I do believe what you’re saying. I don’t feel like you’d tell a lie unless necessary and I don’t see the point of you telling a lie at this point in time. Just because I talk a little harsher than most of us around here do doesn’t mean I’m that bad a person, you know.” She looked up from her nails to look Haneul in the eye. “So is that all there is to the feud?”

Haneul shook her head. “That was simply the spark that caused IAI to denounce their 20 year partnership. You know, it’s funny. The Blue Triangle never seemed like that kind of organisation. They only went after corrupt politicians or criminals.” Haneul paused and then seemed to realise something. “Oh my goodness.”

“What?” Soo Jin stared at Haneul quizzically.

“Don’t tell me Sunghyun was…” Haneul paused as she thought about the man she saw in the tunnels. “Oh my goodness.” Her eyes widened and she looked around with a strange kind of look plastered all over her face. “He can’t be.”

“He can’t be what?”

“That man.” She whispered.

“Which man?” Soo Jin asked as Haneul suddenly darted up and ran towards the door connecting the two dorms. “Yah! Haneul! Where are you going?”

“To confirm something!” Haneul said as she yanked at the door. The door was though, unfortunately, locked from the other side. Haneul began banging at the door and yelling at it. “Open up!” She shouted.

An annoyed Soohyun opened the door with a glare. “Yes? Is there a problem, IAI agent?”

“Not so.” Haneul replied as she darted past him. All she was thinking was how fast Kevin was in telling his group members.

“Hey, sister-in-law.” She looked at Jaeseop’s face which was now jokeless, “Got something to tell us?”

“Not exactly.” Haneul said as she darted towards Kevin. He frowned with a confused look upon his face, balanced with an annoyed one. Haneul almost chuckled at how cute he looked even when he was trying to look pissed. “Woo Sunghyun, I need to confirm something.” She said to him as she kneeled in front of him.

“And that is?” He raised a curious eyebrow, momentarily forgetting the fact that he was supposed to be pissed at her.

Haneul then reached for Kevin’s shirt and lifted it up. The whole room went silent. She began poking at his abs and frowned. “Who knew you’d have abs…” She muttered as she let the shirt down again and frowned at the floor.

All of a sudden, everyone was back in motion again. “Yah! Who gave you permission to do that?” Kevin shouted, this time more embarrassed than angry.

“Well I was just confirming something. It’s not like there’s anything wrong with me touching your abs. I touch Woohyun’s all the time.” Haneul said seriously as she stared at his face. “Do you know of someone called Mephistopheles?” Haneul asked.

Kevin frowned. “Mephistopheles? A drug lord?”

“And have you ever met her personally?”

“No.” Kevin shook his head, “Why?”

Haneul nodded. “Ahhh…” She said and then began laughing loudly and clutching at her stomach.

“Haneul-ah… You seem like you’ve gone crazy.” Everyone turned around to see Soo Jin at the door rolling her eyes, “Care to share what’s so funny?”

“Ah, it’s just funny how for a moment I thought you’d be the one I was looking for. But what am I thinking? Just because you have abs doesn’t mean you’re the one I’m looking for.” She sighed and went back towards the Athena dorm. “Ciao. Have fun, murderer.”

“As if you’ve never murdered anyone before, Miss IAI agent.” Kevin called out back at Haneul.

Haneul crossed her arms as she turned around to face Kevin and shook her head. “Oh, but Mr Blue Triangle assassin, I haven’t. My hands haven’t been dirtied like that yet.” She cocked her head to one side and began to speak sarcastically, “And I’m not even Christian.” She shook her head like it was a pity and slammed the door behind her.

---------

“You shouldn’t have said that to him.” Soo Jin said as she watched Haneul collapse onto the couch with one hand over her face. “His Christianity is a sensitive topic.”

“I know. I can probably guess it is.” Haneul croaked out. Soo Jin stared in wonder. This girl was truly an AB blood, wasn’t she? One moment she seemed so headstrong like nothing would be able to bring her down, the next she looked so weak and vulnerable like even the tiniest push or a little bit of wind would be able to break her down.

“You’re not as strong as you appear, are you?” Soo Jin said as she plopped herself down next to Haneul.

“What are you talking about?” Haneul sighed.

“You seem like the stereotypical female warrior. You won’t be pushed down by what anyone says to you or that sort. You’re even physically very fit, but what I find is that that’s only a façade, isn’t it?” Soo Jin said as she brushed Haneul’s fringe out of her face in a motherly fashion that was rare to ever come upon Soo Jin. The first and last time she had ever brought this side of her out was when her brother was rejected by a girl very badly. And after that whole incident cleared, Soo Jin told herself that she wouldn’t ever have to bring that side out again, because it’s not like she’ll ever care about someone else younger than her that much. Well, she was wrong.

Haneul glared at Soo Jin weakly. “Soo Jin… Why am I such a terrible person?”

Soo Jin seemed to think for a second. “I don’t think you’re a terrible person. I guess it’s just your automatic walls that come up that cause you to spit hurtful things at people?”

“I don’t know.” Haneul rubbed her eyes tiredly.

“Ah! Haneul you’re home?” They both heard the motherly voice of Hye Su say to them. Haneul nodded without letting her hands leave her eyes. “Oh no! What’s that terrible scar?”

“Don’t worry about it.” Haneul grumbled.

“Ah, are you tired, Haneul?” Hye Su asked worriedly.

Haneul shrugged. “I suppose.” She said as she removed her hands away from her eyes. She got up and went to her room, “Have dinner without me. I’m not hungry tonight.”

“What’s wrong with her?” Hye Su asked worriedly in a soft voice.

Soo Jin shrugged. “That’s not my information to disclose. If you want to know, ask her.” Soo Jin said and went off into her room, “I do, however, want to eat dinner tonight. So call me when it’s done.”

Hye Su stared after the two of them worried. The way Haneul was acting was like how her younger sister acted when she had boy problems. Hye Su tapped her chin. Come to think of it, the two of them are the same age, aren’t they? Maybe Haneul really is having boy problems. Hye Su chuckled to herself at the thought of Haneul having boy problems. How unlikely.

---------------

“What was that?” Kiseop asked with a frown.

“What was what?” Kevin frowned as well.

“That? When she casually lifted up your shirt and touched your abs.”

“How would I know? The IAI agents have never made sense to me. In fact, the IAI as a whole doesn’t make sense to me. One day everyone’s just co-operating normally and then the next the IAI denounces their partnership with the Blue Triangle and shames us and makes us look bad. They probably know how much power they have and how influential they are because next thing you know the entire world’s intelligence agencies are after us.” Kevin sighed.

“But hyung, I thought you weren’t part of it back then?”

“No, I wasn’t. But I was still related to it all. It’s not like I’m not assassin code:03’s son for nothing, you know.” Kevin leaned back into the plush sofa and stared at the ceiling.

“The Blue Triangle is so big, isn’t it, hyung?” Dongho said as dropped onto the seat next to Kevin and nudged him, “Yet your father is rank 3.”

“We’ve been through this already Dongho, there’s no need to bring it up again. My father isn’t rank 3 because there’s still 00. So, technically he’s 4. And plus, there’s only 100 ranked people.” Kevin chuckled. “Anyway, you know what? It’s just surprising how seeing how big we are nobody’s betrayed us yet and we haven’t been caught yet.”

“Yeah, yeah.” Dongho nodded and then ran off to the kitchen to get some food without warning.

“What are you going to do though?” Kiseop quietly asked as he looked at Kevin with worry, “Didn’t you say that they’re all after the Blue Triangle?”

Kevin stared at the ground in stony silence and closed his eyes to think. Everyone held their breath in the silent room as they stared at Kevin. Instead of a verbal answer, however, they only received a long and drawn out sign. “I don’t know. I’m not sure what her next move is going to be. To be honest right now the feeling I’m getting is like a chess game. It’s one of those games where no matter what your next move is, the opponent has the ability to draw checkmate on you, but you know your opponent can still be lenient and let you go.”

“Hyung, you’re really making no sense now.” Dongho said through muffled mouthfuls of cake.

“Hey! Is that my cake?” Jaeseop said, standing up and walking towards Dongho.

“No.” Dongho said as he quickly chewed it and swallowed it.

“Oh well. Let’s just let it go.” Kevin sighed and massaged his head.

“Are you going to alert the Blue Triangle then?” Soohyun said and as he watched Kevin shake his head he began to frown. “Why not Kevin? What if anything bad happens?”

“Because somehow even though she’s an IAI agent…” Kevin trailed off as he stared at the door, “Even if she’s said some very harsh things to me, even brought up the subject of my Christianity and what a terrible Christian I am, I don’t believe she’d do something like that to me. I don’t know what it is but I feel like she has a personal history with the Blue Triangle. And it’s not like I’m your typical ‘assassin’, anyway. I’m part of a special branch of the Blue Triangle, after all. If I had actually killed someone by my own hands before, I don’t think I’d be able to live it down. But still, I feel like she has a personal history with the Blue Triangle. She seems rather sensitive to the whole Blue Triangle and IAI thing, even if I know that most IAI agents are, she seems particularly sensitive. I don’t know why, but I’m just so, so sure that something’s not as it seems.”

“How?” Soohyun frowned.

“Did I ever tell you that the first time I saw her she seemed very familiar?” Jaeseop and Dongho finally stopped fighting about the cake and all the boys sat in a circle around Kevin as they all nodded their head. “Well, I have told you guys about that incident 6 years ago with the IAI, right? With my father and all, when I was 15.” They all wordlessly nodded again. “Well I think I’ve realised I’ve probably seen a picture of her somewhere before. Many people at the Blue Triangle right now are from the IAI so they must know her, after all.”

Kevin seemed to ponder something awhile. “Anything the matter, Kevin?” Eli said as he picked up a grape and put it in his mouth.

“No.” Kevin looked up again and shook his head, “I was just thinking that I’d ask someone I know if they know Haneul.”

“How do you even know that Haneul’s her real name?” Hoon pointed out.

Kevin thought about this a while. “You have a point.”

“Yes I do.” Hoon proudly nodded. Kevin shot him a look.

“But do you know what I find strange?” Jaeseop said as he tapped his chin, “That she wants to join the K-Pop industry. Why would she want to do that?”

Kevin shrugged. “Beats me.”

“Do you think it was to investigate you then?” Dongho asked as he munched on a cookie that seemed to have materialised out of nowhere.

Kevin shook his head. “I don’t think so. She seemed so surprised when she found out that I was a Blue Triangle assassin.”

“Acting?” Jaeseop took a guess.

Kevin thought about how genuine she seemed sometimes, then profusely shook his head. “It seemed much too real.”

A soft knock came at the door. “Yes?” Soohyun called out.

“Dinner’s ready.” Came Hye Su’s soft voice at the door.

“Alright! We’ll be there in a moment!” Soohyun called out and then turned back to the circle of boys. “Well, let’s put this conversation behind us for now. We’ll figure something out later. For now, let us just enjoy our food.”

“Do you think we should tell appa?” Dongho asked, this time his mouth clear of food.

“I think he probably already knows.” Kevin sighed and stood up as he headed towards the door, “He would’ve kept it a secret from us because he owes the IAI something, don’t you remember?” Kevin slowly turned the door knob to peer at the dinner table. He found that Haneul wasn’t there and let out a slow sigh of relief. “At least it won’t be awkward over dinner and I’ll be able to eat.” Kevin muttered to himself.

----------------

“8:30.” Haneul muttered to herself in the dark as she spun her sister’s amethyst bracelet around and around on her left wrist, “They sure like to take their time eating, don’t they?” She sat up and let go of the bracelet to instead let her right hand settle on her charm necklace. She picked it up and looked at it in the dark. “A beehive to show I’m ‘as sweet as honey’ and a crown to show he thinks of me as his princess.” Haneul muttered and then laughed a soft and sad laugh and closed her eyes.  “Whatever will I do if he really headed that way?” Haneul sighed at the thoughts of Sungyeol being part of the Blue Triangle.

Her thoughts were cut off by a vibrating of her phone.

Soo Jin – Hey, do you need some snacks or something? It’s not good to starve yourself.

Haneul sighed as she texted back.

No, I’m fine. I’ve gone through hunger strikes, after all. This is nothing.

That doesn’t sound too good. I’m coming over with food anyway.

Not long after Haneul received the text, she heard a knocking on her door.

“I told you I’m fine.” Haneul called out, but she opened the door anyway.

“I know you’re fine, but you still need to eat.” Soo Jin said as she handed Haneul a herbal drink and some vegetable biscuits and dried fruit.

“Oh well. Thank you anyway.” Haneul said as she poked a straw into the herbal drink’s foil covering and began sipping it.

“Anyway while you weren’t at the meeting that the prez requested today, he told us the choreographer he had hired was going to work with Hwayoung on our choreography and that he wants us all to practise the songs to perfection. We’re going to be practising in studio this week and start recording next week. Exciting, isn’t it?” Soo Jin said with a big smile which soon fell off, “Wait, do you even care?”

“I do care.” Haneul nodded, “I chose out of all possible covers to be a K-Pop star with my own motives, you know.”

Soo Jin shrugged and then seemed to remember something. “Well if anything I think Hwayoung’s very worried about you.” Soo Jin said as she invited herself into Haneul’s dark room and sat on her bed.

“Yeah, well, that’s probably her A blood speaking.” Haneul said and then resumed her sipping.

“Are you sure she’s not an agent like you?” Soo Jin asked.

Haneul shook her head. “Technically speaking, she’s not.”

“Un-technically speaking then?”

“She’s a trainee.” Haneul continued to sip, “She’s simply my assistant on this private investigation thing I’m doing.”

“And being a K-Pop star has so much to do with your private investigation?”

Haneul shrugged. “I have certain things I need to do that not even Hwayoung knows clearly.” Haneul sipped the remainders of her herbal drink in one long sip and then sighed as she stared out the window. The two of them sat there in tranquil silence in the dark until Haneul suddenly shattered the silence. “I need to talk to Sunghyun.”

“Kevin might not want to speak to you.” Soo Jin pointed out.

“Yeah, well I will get what I want when he hears what I have to offer.” Haneul said as she grabbed her phone and stood up.

“And what exactly do you have to offer?” Soo Jin said as she too stood up, ready to leave the room.

“That’s secret business.” Haneul winked at Soo Jin playfully but the playfulness slipped right off her face. “No, honestly. It’s stuff you don’t want to bury your head in as a normal person.”

“But I’m not a normal person and I’m curious.” Soo Jin folded her arms in front of her chest and raised an eyebrow at Haneul expectantly. Haneul could tell that Soo Jin was definitely an older sister at this point in time.

“Well, I’m telling you now to keep your nose out of it as a friend.” Haneul sternly said with a grim expression on her face, “There’s a lot of stuff you’d never want to know about any of us buried in our pasts.” Haneul sighed gently, “And I just have this feeling that Sunghyun might know someone I’ve been looking for.

“Who?” Soo Jin asked as Haneul headed out the door.

“Someone.” Haneul mysteriously replied as she headed out of sight.
