Why do you even deserve to continue living?

Fancy Meeting You Here

“Dinner’s rea-…” Hye Su saw Haneul lying down on her bed with her eyes closed, ever so still. “Oh…”

“Yeah, got the message.” Haneul’s mouth suddenly started moving which scared the life out of Hye Su.

“Omo, you were awake?”

“Not really.”

“Then did I interrupt you?”

“No, it was time for my power nap to finish anyway.” Haneul’s eye suddenly opened wide and she got up and stretched. “What’s for dinner?”

“Kimchi jjigae, ddeokbokki and mandu.” Hye Su smiled at Haneul.

“Kimchi jjigae?” Haneul raised an eyebrow, “But doesn’t have that samgyupsal in it?”

“Yes, yes it does.”

“But aren’t we supposed to be losing weight, not gaining it?”

“President Kim doesn’t need to know.” Hye Su laughed a little and the two of them sat down at the dining table. Haneul pretended to smile at everyone and ignore Kevin but she could actually see him pretending to ignore her and give her small glares every so often.

“This is good, unnie!” Haneul said cheerily after she swallowed a lump of her food down .

“That’s good to hear, Haneul.” Hye Su smiled at her softly. She had never seen Haneul act this cheerful before.

“Don’t you think it’s good too, Sunghyun?” Haneul smiled at him brightly, hiding a mask of her mockery. He only glared back at her.

“Of course it’s good. But as idols, we should be watching our weight. And you too. You’re going to become one soon but you don’t care about what you’re eating?” He frigidly replied.

“Of course, of course. But I can always just work it off soon. I’ll join you guys at the gym some time, okay?” Haneul asked sweetly with her voice b full of poison. Somehow in the tie between when she last saw Kevin and at that moment, she had developed a love of bothering him.

“Of course you can, noona!” Dongho answered excitedly, “And I didn’t know noona works out!”

“Well where else have I randomly disappeared off to in the past month?” Haneul asked as if it were obvious that a girl like her would work out.

“Oh, I don’t know. What about dates with your boyfriend.” Kevin snidely remarked.

“Oh, but unfortunately that’s not it.” Haneul shot back, not willing to take any of his crap or act like the weak one denying Woohyun as her boyfriend, “Unfortunately I’m quite a strong girl and to keep up my strength I need to work out.”

“Complimenting your own level of strength now, are we?” He gave her a sarcastic smile.

“That is exactly what I’m doing.” Haneul nodded and gave him a sarcastic smile back, “Problem, Sunghyun sweety?”

The dinner table had gone silent at Haneul and Kevin’s bickering. “Hyung, what’s wrong?” Dongho blinked innocently, “What’s wrong with Haneul noona coming with us to the gym to work out?”

“Oh, there’s nothing wrong.” Kevin mumbled to himself.

“I don’t know what’s got your knickers in a knot, man.” Eli commented absent mindedly in English while shovelling food down, “I mean, Haneul’s hot, man. Didn’t you see her toned legs in that dress at the club? I don’t see why you wouldn’t want a hot girl working out next to you.”

“You do not realise how awkward that must be for the person you’re complimenting to be hearing that, do you?” Hwayoung said sarcastically in English with the slightest accent.

“No, it’s fine.” Haneul sighed and continued eating.

“Oh yes, that’s right.” Hye Su spoke up after a minute’s silence, “I forgot to mention the fact that President Kim called before.”

“Yeah, and?” Soo Jin said carelessly as she continue to shove mandu down .

“Our group name has been decided!” Hye Su said excitedly.

Everyone paused for a minute to look at her.

“On 15.6% was the name Lyra.” She waited for applause but everyone was too busy and intently waiting for the decided name of the group to care. She sighed at the lack of drama, “The percentages for Artemis and Athena were 41.3% and 43.1%... Respectively!” She said and she and Eun Ae both clapped together. Eun Ae though, a whole lot more excited than she was.

“So Athena’s going to be our group name?” Haneul asked, seemingly unaffected by the big news that was dropped, “So we’ll definitely be going for the tough image?”

“Yep.”

“Oh dear.” Haneul said and rubbed her forehead.

“What’s wrong? You wouldn’t have any trouble with a tough image, would you?” Hye Su raised an eyebrow, “You’re not the particularly cute kind, you know.”

“Yeah, I know. But what about Eun Ae?”

“Good point.” Hwayoung tapped on her chin, “But let’s just let Eun Ae deal with acting tough and strong. Just like how we have to have Kevin and Dongho deal with looking tough and strong.”

“Hey!” The two of them cried out in unison. Everyone at the dinner table laughed except the two of them and Haneul who looked like her head was aching.

“What’s wrong, Haneul?” Hye Su asked softly while the rest of the boys were laughing in the background.

“Nothing’s wrong.” Haneul brightly replied and straightened back up and plastered a cheerful smile on her face naturally. “Why do you ask?”

“Oh, you just looked like you were in pain. That’s all. Good to see that nothing’s wrong.” Hye Su smiled gently at Haneul and then went back to eating. Haneul stared at her food and sighed as she felt her appetite leaving. She quickly finished off everything that was still in her bowls and on her plate and then quickly stood up and walked into the kitchen and washed her bowls and her plates. She didn’t want to leave a burden on Hye Su who no doubt would have to clean up after all the boys. She then walked quickly past the dinner table and back into her room, closing the door soundlessly behind her.

“What’s wrong with her now?” Kevin asked, almost in an annoyed voice.

“I don’t know. Maybe she’s just tired. Let her be.” Soo Jin said, surprising everyone that she was the thoughtful one for once. “What?” she asked at all the strange looks she was getting.

“Oh, nothing… Just… Since when did you become this thoughtful about other people?” Soohyun asked.

“Yah! You make me sound like a complete little ! I do care! I just don’t show it as readily as you people.” She stuck her tongue out at Jaeseop who had begun to laugh.

--------

“Amethyst symbolises protection, wisdom and healing…” Haneul mumbled to herself as she scrolled down an internet webpage with information on amethysts, “Symbolises unnie perfectly… Hmmm… Amethysts set in silver were often worn by healers?” Haneul looked at the bracelet sitting on a handkerchief. “Seems like Changmin oppa’s message was that unnie’s a healer or something. That boy always thinks so far.” Haneul’s mumbling trailed off into something incomprehensible.

Haneul picked up her phone, about to call Woohyun for his opinion when she realised that he was probably halfway to the other side of the world by now. She mentally cursed the bad timing of his mission and put her phone back down. “I’ll just study the bracelet by myself for now.” She muttered aloud to herself grumpily.

She turned the bracelet around and around under a bright lamp and studied it closely. She noticed the way the amethyst would glow especially bright when being shone at from certain angles. She noticed the very careful engravings on the silver. She spun the bracelet around and around until she was sure she had inspected every single inch, or rather millimetre of the outside. She then look at the inside of the silver bracelet. She saw some careful calligraphy in one section and look closer. She read the small, barely visible inscription inside. It was in Changmin’s most careful calligraphy in Korean. “For the girl I love most.” Haneul mumbled and then had to bite her lip to stop herself from smiling sadly. Haneul could see abrasion around the edges of the careful writing. It must’ve been hidden underneath, only being shown after one wore it a lot.

“Ahhhh…” Haneul sighed to herself and placed the bracelet down and covered her face and squeezed her eyes shut tightly to try and prevent tears from coming out. “I ruined it, didn’t I? I ruined everything, absolutely everything for unnie who was only the kindest person on earth to me.” She felt a moist liquid touching her palms of her hands and she shook her head, “Not now, Haneul, not now. You can’t cry now.” She whispered to herself and brought her hands down to see the small drops on her palms. Soon larger pools of salty water joined the two initial drops on each hand. Haneul sighed and let the tears continue spilling out.

“You ruin everything, just absolutely everything, Jang Haneul. Why do you even deserve to continue living?”
