Fancy Meeting You Here

Haneul looked up to see Kevin who was also exiting from U-Kiss’s apartment and she smiled at him.

“It’s alright, but you can come if you want.” She said and simply moved towards the lifts herself.

Kevin joined her in the lift and the silence at least wasn’t awkward this time, but Haneul found it rather comfortable.

“Do you know any supermarkets nearby by any chance Kevin?” Haneul asked as the both of them stepped out with Kevin putting on his sunglasses, “Oh, Sunghyun why are you putting on your sunglasses?”

“Because we don’t want fangirls to find out and then stir up something about the two of us dating, do we?”

“Why would they do that?” Haneul asked as she blinked her eyes innocently. “It’s not like we’re acting like we’re dating or displaying PDA…”

“Well, fangirls are just crazy beings, okay? And fanboys too. Better not act too friendly with people of the opposite gender or else their fans will start to think you’re dating. Or even people of the same gender at that. All those crazy netizens and their ‘OTP’s.” Kevin chuckled.

“What’s an OTP?” Haneul questioned with large enquiring eyes.

“Ah, it stands for ‘one true pair’. I think it’s supposed to mean two people who were destined for each other or something or the other like that.”

“That’s so cheesy and full of bull.” Haneul laughed, “Nobody’s destined for each other in this world. There’s no such thing as destiny.” She said in a harsh voice.

“I guess if that’s what you believe in.” Kevin shrugged, simply accepting her opinion. “Anyway, I think there’s a supermarket in that direction. Let’s go take a look.”

-----------

“We’ve already got enough ingredients for curry for 12, where are you going?” Kevin called out to Haneul as she walked away from him.

Haneul didn’t respond so he called out again, “Haneul! Where are you going?” She still didn’t respond after this so he just frowned and chased after her.

When he caught up, she was in front of a wood-fired pizza store. “I’ve never had wood-fired pizza before, only the usual types you have at mainstream pizza stores. Is wood-fired pizza good?” She asked Kevin.

“Why are you asking about pizza? Come on, let’s go home before the others get worried.” He said as he tugged on her sleeve with his left hand as his right and was preoccupied with carrying the shopping. Haneul, however, ignored hi requests for them to go home and went into the store. “Wait, what? Where are you going?” She ignored him once again and he sighed and just followed her in.

Two bell chimes were heard as they stepped into the store. “Welcome, young lady and young sir. What would you like to have today?” An Italian man with heavily accented Korean said to them as his head turned up and looked at them. A jovial smile was put on his face.

“What’s your special?” Haneul asked in her accented Italian. The man’s face brightened as he thought that she could speak Korean but before he could say anything Haneul held a gloved hand up. “I can only speak a little bit of Italian. Can you speak English?” She asked.

“Why, yes. I can speak English.” He answered in accented English, although not as heavily accented as his Korean.

“Ah, that’s good.” Haneul nodded and Kevin sighed in relief as he could understand what they were saying now.

“Our special is the wood-fired pepperoni pizza.” The man said while wiping sweat off his brow from the heat of the wood-firing ovens, “Would you like some of that?”

“Do you like pepperoni pizza?” Haneul asked Kevin.

“Ah? Me? Yeah, I like all kinds of pizza.” He said and smiled.

“Alright. Two wood-fired pepperoni pizzas please. Take away.” Haneul said politely.

“Two of those, coming right up!” The man said jovially and barked orders to the people in the kitchen in English. “Take a seat for now.” He said as he turned back to Haneul and Kevin.

Haneul and Kevin both sat down at a small table across from each other. “So what’s with the sudden urge to eat wood-fired pizza?” Kevin asked.

“You told me last time your favourite food was pizza, didn’t you?” Haneul said with a smile on her face.

Kevin blinked a few times in surprise at the fact that she had remembered and softened, “You still remember?”

“Yup. And I also remember that you like spicy foods so I bought the ingredients for deokbokki just for you.”

Kevin looked at the girl in front of him and couldn’t help but to smile. “Geez. Are you sure you’re not a kissme? You seem to remember all my favourite foods for me.” He paused and searched her face then smiled again, “Thank you.”

“No need to thank me, and positive I’m not a kissme. You guys can try and turn me into one though, if you wish.” Haneul smirked at him.

For the next ten minutes the two of them did their own thing on their separate phones. All of a sudden, Haneul saw a notification up the top of her phone’s screen pop down.

“Woo Sunghyun
This is boring.”

She looked at the text message and couldn’t help but to smile. She opened messages and texted back.

Why are you texting me when I’m sitting directly across from you?

Within a few seconds she received a reply.

It doesn’t matter. I have plenty of credit anyways.

Well, you shouldn’t waste your credit like this anyways.

Who cares… It’s more fun this way ;)

Aigoo… You sound like such a child… So much like Dongho…

Dongho ey… That does remind me, you took a picture with Dongho did you not?

Yeah, I did. Why?

Want to take a picture with me too?

Haneul paused her texting and looked up to see Kevin staring back at her. She continued staring into his eyes and started to notice all the details about them, big and small. His eyes were such a warm shade of brown that she couldn’t help but to feel nostalgic about them. Kevin’s eyes just reminded her so much of his, those soft eyes of his that could both make someone calm down under his gaze and also tense up in fear. That she hadn’t seen somewhere other than her dreams since she was 9 and he was 11.

“You okay there?” Haneul was snapped out of her trance by Kevin worriedly waving his hands in front of her face, “It’s okay if you don’t want to.”

“Ah, no. It’s fine. I was just thinking of something else, that’s all.” Haneul said and smiled shakily.

Kevin looked at her worriedly, “What were you thinking of?”

“Hm?” Haneul blinked in surprise that he asked her that then quickly composed herself again, “Ah, nothing. Just someone.”

“Just someone? That doesn’t sound like nothing.” He said and nudged her slightly with a small laugh.

“Just don’t worry about it.” Haneul vigorously shook her head as she said those words, though more to herself than to him, “Don’t think about it.”

Kevin gave her one last weird look before he dangled his phone in front of her face, “Do you have sunglasses on you right now? Because if you don’t you can always borrow mine.”

“Ah, can I borrow yours then?” Haneul asked meekly after she searched through her bag, “It appears I’ve managed to leave my sunglasses at home.”

Kevin chuckled. “Of course you can.” He pushed his sunglasses which was on the table between them towards her. Kevin opened the camera application on his phone and put the camera mode on self-shot. He put the phone up in the air at a 45 degree angle and looked at Haneul. “You ready?”

“Of course I am.” Haneul said.

“Alright… Three… Two… One…” He said and as he said ‘one’ Haneul stuck her tongue one at the camera.

“Aigoo…” He said as the picture was taken, “In pictures you’re so different to what you’re actually like in real life.”

“What do you mean?” Haneul scratched her head in puzzlement.

“You look like you’re the cute kind of girl like Eun Ae in photos, whilst in real life you’re actually some strange kid.”

“Yah!” Haneul said and whacked him across the top of the head, “I’m not strange!”

“If you weren’t, we wouldn’t group you in with Kiseop hyung, you know?” Kevin said as he rubbed his head.

“What? Don’t group me in with that strange 5D kid!” Haneul grumbled and pouted slightly as she crossed her arms. Kevin couldn’t help but to chuckle at her.

“Now you look more like you do in your pictures.”

“Young lady and young sir! Your pizza is done!” The same Italian man returned from behind in the kitchens and held out two square cardboard boxes over the counter, “That’ll be 19,300 won thank you very much!”

Haneul pulled out the wad of money that President Kim had left for them before and handed the man two 10,000 won notes. “Keep the change. Thank you.” She smiled at him politely as she took the boxes in her hands.

The two of them soon stepped out into the air which had frozen since they had entered the warm pizza store.

“Let’s hurry home before the pizzas get home, okay?” Haneul said as she started a brisk stride towards the direction of their apartments.

“Alright, but give me back my sunglasses or we’ll be delayed even more and that whole couple thing I told you about earlier may happen.”

“Oh, okay.” Haneul said as she pulled Kevin’s sunglasses off her face. She had begun to feel so comfortable with them on that she didn’t notice she had left them on.

-------

“Here. Pizza.” Haneul said as she dumped the two cardboard boxes on the table, “Eat it as you wait for curry.”

“Yeah! Food!” Dongho and Eun Ae both exclaimed excitedly and charged straight at it.

“Eun Ae, shouldn’t you be watching your diet if we’re going to debut soon?” Hye Su raised an eyebrow at Eun Ae.

“No worries. I’ll just work it off later.” Eun Ae said and then bit straight into a slice of pizza.

“Need help Haneul?” Hye Su called out.

“Nah, I’ll be fine.” Haneul said and headed towards the kitchen.

Whilst Haneul was making the curry for 12, (really, it was more like enough for 20) Dongho gamed on his PSP, Soo Jin and Hye Su were in their rooms studying and the rest went exploring. First he took a look at Eun Ae’s room, then he went to Soo Jin’s room (which he quickly got shunned out of), Hye Su’s room then Hwayoung’s. The last room he went to was Haneul’s. He pushed the door open silently and the light. The moment the light was on, a small trinket managed to catch Dongho’s eye. The pocket watch.

Dongho approached the pocket watch on the desk with fascination. “Wah… So pretty…” Dongho muttered to himself. He pressed gently on the opening and it popped open a crack and he pushed it open. Dongho stared at the clock face for a few moments then realised that something was wrong. Or rather, two things. One, it was not 4:40:28. And two, the clock hands had obviously long stopped as he could see a little rust forming around the centre of the clock face where the hands joined together. He peered closely at it and noticed a small encryption on the surface of the thick brass hands of the hour hands. “H.J.” He read out, “What’s HJ?” He blinked a few times then realised that those were Haneul’s initials.

“Ah… Haneul noona’s pocket watch? But it’s so old… What’s it still doing here?” He dangled it from its chain for a bit as he scratched his head. “Ah! She must’ve been planning to throw it out because she left it here but never had the time as she had to go cook for us!” Dongho narrated to himself and ruffled his own hair, “You smart boy, Dongho. It’s okay noona, Dongho will throw it out for you.”

Dongho went downstairs to the foyer of the apartments and asked for it to be deposited in hard trash.. He then dusted invisible dust off his hands and went back into the girls’ apartment and continued to game. Not a short while after, Haneul came back into the living room and called all of them to the kitchen. “Come eat!” She said and smiled at them. Dongho looked up and couldn’t help but to smile at her. In his all too important self opinion, Haneul looked adorable with her hair tied up in a high bun and an apron on.

“Neh, noona~” Dongho frivolously skipped to the kitchen, prepared to taste more of Haneul’s cooking. All the rest filtered in with him and Haneul was left standing there holding the kitchen door open. Kevin was the last one to walk towards the door and after he walked in he paused there looking at Haneul.

“Aren’t you going to go in?” Kevin questioned.

“I’m just going to go to my room for a bit.” Haneul smiled at him gently.

He simply nodded and continued towards the kitchen where everyone was helping themselves to servings of Haneul’s Japanese style curry. Haneul walked back to her room while taking her bun out and the moment she opened her door she froze. Something was out of place.

Haneul narrowed her eyes at the room before her and because of the item’s value, she detected what was missing straight away. Her eyes widened. She screamed.
