A Late Dinner

Fancy Meeting You Here

Haneul was a fast thinker, but any matters regarding her sister always caused her to freeze up. She couldn’t think of an excuse fast enough for that photo. Hwayoung walked up behind Haneul, wondering why Haneul seemed so stiff. She walked into the study far enough and realised Dongho was holding up the framed picture of Haneul and her sister and she remembered that Haneul appeared to be sensitive about matter concerning her sister.

“We were just wondering who the two girls in that photo are.” Kevin said as he took the frame from Dongho, “I’m going to guess that one of them is you?”

Haneul swallowed the lump in and just stiffly nodded. “Um. Y-yeah.” Haneul stuttered. Hwayoung raised an eyebrow at Haneul. Agents weren’t one to stutter, and especially not Haneul. Unless of course, they were acting. She made a mental note to ask Miyoung in the future about why Haneul seemed especially sensitive about matters regarding her sister. “I’m… the younger one…” Haneul said quietly, sounding as normal as possible. Kevin seemed to notice the mood change and raised an eyebrow slightly.

“Who’s the older girl?” Soohyun asked, oblivious to Haneul’s discomfort, “She looks so much like you, yet so different at the same time.”

“It’s the ambience, isn’t it?” Hwayoung spoke up from behind Haneul, giving Haneul a fright. This caused Hwayoung to raise her eyebrow further at this. She didn’t even walk quietly, therefore Haneul definitely should have sensed her.

“Yeah… She seems so much softer and nicer than you, Haneul.” Soohyun said and nodded while looking at the photo.

“Geez. I’m offended.” Haneul said, joking weakly.

“So, who is it then?” Soohyun said looking at Haneul, “Judging by age she should be 4 years older than you, which would be my age. And since she already looks so pretty here…” He trailed off then winked at Haneul which caused her to laugh weakly.

“She’s… my sister.” Haneul said slowly, “My older sister.”

“Ah… Introduce me to her sometime, hey?” Soohyun said and winked at her.

“Ah…” Haneul paused and Hwayoung held her breath waiting for the answer, “Of course. Some other time. That human body right there in the photo isn’t in the country right now though.” Haneul said with a hardness in her voice. She was telling the truth. Her sister really wasn’t in the country. Kevin noticed how grim she appeared and quickly changed the subject.

“And all these pictures of you with these boys… Sheeshes you have a lot of pictures of yourself with guys, don’t you?” He said with an eyebrow raised. “Who are they all?”

Haneul immediately brightened and she attempted to push the matter of her sister into a back corner of her brain, hoping that it’ll never come up again. “Ah. These pictures are pictures of me and my Infinite oppas!” She said cheerily again.

“Infinite? You do have a lot of oppas, but I wouldn’t say you have an infinite amount either, Haneul.” Kevin said with an eyebrow raised. Haneul realised that since he was American he understood ‘Infinite’ in English and therefore he thought she meant she had so many oppas, there was an infinite amount.

“Ah. No. These pictures in this section of the board.” She said pointing to the corkboard all the pictures were pinned up on, “Are pictures of me with my oppas that formed a sort of a group and called themselves Infinite. Infinite is made up of my Woohyun oppa and his friends.” She said with a soft smile. Everyone raised an eyebrow and how tenderly she said ‘Woohyun oppa’ and wondered if he was her boyfriend. “Woohyun oppa.” She said pointing to Woohyun who was in more than half of the photos she had with ‘Infinite’, “This is Sunggyu oppa the amazing singer with the small eyes here.” Haneul said while pointing to a handsome man who unfortunately had small eyes. “Oh yes, Woohyun oppa is such a good singer too. L oppa is the handsome one here.” She said while pointing to a perfect faced guy who looked about a year or so older than Haneul, “Sungjong is the adorable maknae who finds it amazing I’m younger than him so he forces me to call him oppa even though he’s only older than me by 2 months and a bit.” Haneul said while pointing to a girly looking boy and smacked her own forehead and sighed then continued, “These two are Dongwoo, the short dino and Hoya, the dance machine. They’re both amazing dancers and rappers and also the best of friends.” She said pointing to the two boys and nodded to herself.

“Hey! We’re good dancers and singers too! Not to mention we’re hot too!” Some of the boys protested and Haneul just laughed.

“Ara, ara!” Haneul said while nodding and laughing.

“And this one?” Kevin said as he pointed to a picture of a boy in a tuxedo and sunglasses hugging Haneul, looking not that much taller than Haneul.

“That’s my Young Bae oppa, the one that bought this apartment for me and the one who owns the apartment you boys are going to sleep in tonight.” Haneul said and nodded to herself again.

“Ah… I see…” He said and nodded, “But how do you know so many boys?” Kevin asked curious as to how such a strange girl like her who didn’t exactly seem extremely social or a managed to know so many good looking boys. “School?” He took a stab.

“Nah.” Haneul shook her head and fanned the air in front of her face to show that it wasn’t right, “I pulled out of mainstream schooling when I was 9. 10 in Korean age, although I rather use international age.”

“In third grade?” Kevin said with eyebrows raised.

“Nah. Fourth grade age. But I was in middle school first year. I was ahead by 3 years, so yeah…” She trailed off then suddenly walked out of the study because her internal clock was tingling.

“Hey… Hey! Haneul! Don’t suddenly walk away when we’re talking!” Kevin yelled at her, “It’s rude you know!”

“The cake should have finished baking by now. If I don’t go now it’ll burn soon.” She simply yelled back. After exactly 13 minutes, Haneul had already finished making the frosting and had frosted the red velvet cake perfect. She then moved on to make two batches of fried rice in two separate woks at once. As Haneul turned off the fire and was about to dish out the first batch, she noticed movement from the corner of her eye. Her head snapped to the left and she noticed a hungry Dongho sneaking towards the cake attempting to steal some. “Yah! Have I said you can take some yet?” She yelled at him. He whimpered and just ran away to his hyungs.

Haneul noticed Hye Su walk past the kitchen so she just yelled out, “Hye Su-sshi? Could you come here and help me please?”

“Yes?” Hye Su said as she walked into the kitchen, “What’s the problem?”

“Could you please make the third batch and also distribute the first and second batch to 4 bowls each? I need to call the front desk to bring up mattresses and blankets for you guys.” She handed the handle of the first batch’s wok over to Hye Su, washed her hands and walked out of the kitchen towards the study room to call the front desk.

As she approached the study, she could hear small movement in there. She walked closer to the door and closed her eyes to listen carefully. There it was. The unmistakable noise of someone rifling through papers silently and trying to quietly pull open drawers. Haneul’s eyelids fluttered open and she soundlessly put hand on the handle and in one fluid motion in under one second’s time she opened the door and saw someone in there. This person wasn’t doing quite what she had expected though.

“Sunghyun-sshi, what are you doing sitting here in my study room alone reading through my Murakami Haruki collection? Can you even read the Japanese?” She asked while raising an eyebrow.

“Yeah, a bit.” He said, eyes not leaving the book he read, which happened to be ‘After Dark’.

“That’s my favourite Murakami Haruki book.” She informed him, “If the Japanese is hard for you, do you want me to find you an English version of that?” She asked, “I’m sorry but the only other version I have on hand right now is the Chinese version.”

“No need. I’ve read the English version.” He said, “This’ll help me improve my Japanese.”

“Alright. However you want it.” She said as she walked up to the portable phone charge on the desk and pulled off the phone and dialed ‘100’. After a few rings she heard the glum and grumpy voice of Ryu Heechul, Heesun ahjumma’s brother. “Oh hey, Heechul ahjussi.” She said and smirked as she knew he hated being called ahjussi.

“Yes. What is it?” He snapped.

“Could you get service to bring up… Let’s see…” She said speaking slowly to annoy him.

“Hurry it up, will ya?”

“Let’s see… 6 mattresses and an equal number of blankets?”

“Whaddya need so many mattresses and blankets for?” He grumbled at her.

“I have…” She looked at Kevin, wondering whether to call him a guest or a friend. Kevin seemed to realise that she was looking at him so he mouthed the latter to her with thumbs up, “I have friends over today.”

“Friends? As in plural?” Heechul ahjussi snorted, “Is it your ‘Infinite oppas’?” He asked mockingly.

“Oh wow, you just have so much faith in my socialising skills, don’t you Heechul ahjussi?” she said sarcastically, “But actually, to your great surprise, it’s not.” Haneul said while shaking her head even though she knew he couldn’t see. “I made new friends. Surprised?” She asked the last word, letting every syllable roll of her tongue slowly.

“Of course I am. You? New friends? What are you going to do with these new friends this time? Collect information from them? Drug them and steal the secret files they’re carrying?” He snorted, “Anyway I’ll hang up now. Talking with you always makes my mood become bad.” He said and hung up without saying goodbye.

“Geez… Heechul ahjussi is always so rude.” Haneul sighed, then turned to Kevin as she placed the phone back onto its charger, “Anyway. Come out now, will you? I think the dinner and dessert are done now.” She said with a small smile. Kevin rose up from the seat wordlessly and followed her out, “I hope you’ll like the fried rice and the cake.” Haneul said while smiling up at him, stunning him slightly, “The funny thing is, Chinese fried rice was taught to me by my Woohyun oppa even though he’s fully Korean and I’m the one that’s part Chinese. And also, in my very own opinion, red velvet cake is my specialty out of all the cakes, so it should be rather good.” She said then laughed at herself, “I’m just so modest, aren’t I?”

“Ah, so very modest, Miss Jang.” He said and laughed.

“Sunghyun-sshi, what’s your favourite food? If I can make it, I’ll make it for you next time.”

“Ah…” Kevin said while tapping on his chin, “My favourite food’s pizza.”

“Aw. That’s no good.” Haneul said and pouted, “I’ve never made pizza before. I’m only good at asian foods.”

“Ddeokbokki then?” He said as they reached the dining area, “I like spicy foods.”

“Alright. I’ll make ddeokbokki just for you when we move into the dorms together, okay?” Haneul said with a smile.

“Yah! Kevin! Stop flirting around with Haneul or else our hungry maknae will eat your share!” Soohyun yelled at him.

“Yah!” Kevin shouted as he ran towards Dongho, “Don’t you dare touch my share!”

Haneul laughed at them all. She walked over to her stool at the bench and too ate her serving of fried rice. After they were all finished, Haneul asked if the U-Kiss boys or any of the girls had lessons at their universities early next morning. The boys replied that they had a photoshoot at about 8 in the morning so Haneul recommended that they all go to sleep soon.

And so, a day was safely concluded at Haneul’s apartment without anything finding out anything suspicious about her… Or so she hoped.
