CHAPTER 27

Luna was telling us about the safe arrival of the exhibition pieces 3 days ago. Since she’s already here in New York, the Institute asked her to supervise it together with Miss Hwang and Miss Choi.

My mind was still wandering on the scene earlier. The flashes I had… it was quick like seeing a life in its various stages. It was like in the movies when you have those scenes flashing in front your eyes.

The sequence and the era was so like what I saw when I had the dream about the Gongju and the Gongzhu. The clothes, the woman’s hair… the face.

There was something familiar with the face…

We entered an automatic door and was greeted by some people working on their desk, some are talking on the phone and some are busy on their computer. At the end was Miss Jung’s office, the wall was glass so you can see the inside if the venetian blinds are not taken down. On her door was a signage with her name.

Jessica Jung-Kwon

Head, Communications and Marketing Department

Smithsonian Museum of Natural History

Kwon…. so she’s married…

She looks so young! Around 29 maybe or same age as me and Amber?

I turned 29 last October but my students said I look like 24. That’s why I love teaching, they make me so young.

We entered her office and sat on the couch while waiting for her. Ju-hyun was asking us about the 3D image result of the bones when it was exhibited in Korea and why it wasn’t released. Amber and I shared a look and just smiled telling her that it’s a decision made by the Institute and the foundation, that it wasn’t accurate enough and might be a controversy like what happened when some scientists and team of historians did a scan on Tutankhamun’s remains. The mighty image of the boy King was damaged when they released a 3D full body imagery of the young Pharaoh showing his body was not proportioned, his hips was big, and he has a club foot. His face was also not the face depicted on the golden mask he was wearing, that made the scientists conclude that all of it was cause by the relationship between his parents.

The truth is, Vic and Miss Hwang showed the results to me and Amber the day before the exhibit opened. They also made a real life wax figure of the heads that made me wonder in awe. It was what I expected on my mind…

The 3D image results of the skulls formed a face each, that if it’s shown to the nation of Korea it will be a big news.

You see, Amber and I attended the press conference announcing the discovery of the remains. Explaining to the media how we have found it and the supporting story that the Song Foundation researchers has collected together with the agency of Miss Hwang. Our faces was plastered on TV and in major newspapers for a week. A magazine even offered to have us featured, I thought it was for the expedition but it turns out they want to know more about our personal lives. I declined it saying that I prefer to be in private.

So if you will suddenly release the image on the day of the exhibit opening, it will be a hot topic again.

Because the images accurately depicts Amber’s and mine’s faces. From the contour of the Gongzhu’s nose, to her jaw, and . The only difference is the hair which they assumed was long since it was the ancient times and Chinese princesses tends to keep their hair long.

The Gongju, it was my face in there. My forehead, even my nose and my chin! When they showed it to me and Amber both of us were not really shock. Well we already saw them in our dreams so it’s just a confirmation of our wild guess. I told Miss Hwang that it’s much better if we don’t release it in Korea… or never.

Ju-hyun went out to get Miss Jung’s secretary. Luna and Amber were chatting about another project that the Song Foundation is working on which is in North Korea which she declined to be part of because of my pregnancy and her impending teaching job at SNU plus the fact that it’s the North!

I stood up from my seat and looked around the office. It was simple and modern, some replicas of Han Dynasty scrolls were hanging on the wall, a painting by Salvador Dali, a couple of African drums being used by shamans for rituals, a Gayageum, some posters marking the anniversary of the museum. I turned around and saw Miss Jung’s desk, it was clean and organized. The folders and documents were neatly stocked on the IN & OUT tray but her laptop was opened. There are a couple of picture frames in there, one was her with a beautiful woman with a big smile on her face hugging her from behind while wearing a Mickey Mouse ear. Looks like they are in Disney Land. The other photo belongs to a little girl who l think is around 2 or 3 years old. She was grinning cutely wearing a Mickey Mouse onesie and one look I know who’s daughter she is.

Omo… I hope my baby Llama is as cute as this kid! So chubby and her cheeks so red! Yah baby Llama! You have to be more cuter than this kid, arasso? I was rubbing my belly while talking internally to my baby and turned around.

So she is married with a kid…

Wait a minute.

I stopped on my tracks my eyebrows twisting and went back discreetly near the table. If I am correct….

“Oh my GOD!” I suddenly blurted out alarming Amber and Luna. They stood and went to my side, Amber holding my shoulders.

“Krystal! What?! What happened?!”

I smacked her head playfully due to her overreacting and held Luna’s shoulders from behind letting her took a peek on the photos at the table. I know we are being nosy but I just can’t believe it!

“Luna! Is Miss Jung already married?”

“Yes, she is. She also have a daughter… yah! Let go of me!”

“And she’s married to that pretty girl hugging her from behind with a Mickey Mouse ear??!”

“Uhhh…Yes?”

I dropped her shoulders and grinned at her “Okay. That’s all..” i smiled cutely at her and went back to the couch.

The two looked at me weirdly but shrugged it out. Hehehe…. I was just curious that’s why. I didn’t know she swings like me too, she was just too beautiful and classy.

Ju-hyun came back with Miss Jung’s secretary bringing with them cookies and tea plus a hot chocolate for me. Miss Jung finally arrived with the Director of the museum and we finally started the meeting. She said a lot of artist and historians, some wealthy philanthropists will be coming tomorrow at the opening exhibition. Amber told them the Elder Song will be coming straight from China and her cousin Vic will be coming too.

The Director and Amber was talking about the discovery of Genghis Khan’s tomb when I noticed someone staring at me. It wasn’t Ju-hyun because she’s busy talking with Luna about work, they are not lovey dovey when Ju-hyun is at work… they turn professional and I love it.

It was Miss Jung who was looking at me intently, like she was scanning my face. I smiled at her and she answered it too with a smile that made my heart warm. I don’t know why… but that’s what I felt. Like I’ve known her a long time ago…

The meeting ended and the Director said goodbye to us saying that he will see us tomorrow at the exhibit opening. I approached Miss Jung who went to her table to get something and took a deep breath before calling her.

“Miss Jung…”

She turned around and smiled at me. There it goes again… that feeling.

“Professor Jung…” both of us laughed softly at the mention of our surname. It’s just a coincidence that we have the same surname, one of the problems of Koreans having the same surname but no relations.

“This is not going to work, much better if you just call me Jessica.”

“Hahaha…I know. Like what I said earlier, just call me Krystal.” we giggled and there it goes again, that feeling of warmth running on my veins.

“Umm… I’m sorry to ask this… I saw the photos on your desk a while ago. You’re married too?” her face suddenly lit up upon mention of being married and she took a photo frame from her table and showed it to me. It was a family photo of her and the pretty woman with the toddler on her lap.

“Yes, these are my treasures. My wife and my daughter, she turned 3 years old last January. Isn’t she cute and pretty?” her face showed proudness and sincerity, love and devotion for the treasures she have. Her fingers ran through the photo and sighed with a happy face before looking back at me. “Hahaha! I’m sorry! It’s just that when it comes to my wife and my daughter I really like talking about them.”

“It’s okay Jessica, even I talk about this baby Llama often to family and friends even if she’s still inside me.”

“You’re pregnancy makes you stunning, do you know that? When I saw you earlier at the lobby you were glowing..” okay that made me happy hehehe…

“Hahaha…” I brushed my hair back feeling embarrassed of her statement. Amber came to my side placing her hand on my waist.

“Miss Jung, maybe we can have a look at the preparations for tomorrow? Ready to see the Princesses Krys?”

“Yup, let’s go!”

----------

Amber, Ju-hyun and Miss Jessica was walking ahead of me and Luna going to the exhibition hall where the artifacts and the remains of the Gongju and Gongzhu will be shown tomorrow. i was clinging my arms on Luna when I whispered at her.

“… Miss Jessica is weird.”

“Why?”

“I caught her staring at me while we were having a meeting. Don’t get me wrong I’m not thinking bad about it but it really feels weird.”

“She’s actually a very nice person Krys, Ju-hyun and I went out with Jessica and Yuri for dinner a lot of times now and the couple are very nice and warm people. Her wife owns a bakeshop near Central Park she bakes delicious cookies and pastries. Let’s go there later I’ll treat you.” we giggled together like 2 teenagers while following the 3.

Miss Jessica has this air of authority on her that makes the people whom she passes by look at her with respect and awe. She’s classy and authoritive but when she smiles she melts your heart.

We arrived at the hall and she showed us the artifacts that will be exhibited together with the remains. The ancient sword was placed inside a glass rectangular display together with the dagger and a brief description regardin
