CHAPTER 23

It has been a crazy week after all the unexpected drama and heartbreak we got from Jonghyun’s death. I’m just thankful that I am strong enough to be Amber’s shoulder to lean on in times like this.

Upon returning home to Seoul, the Prosecutors office welcomed us asking about the incident. They would like to investigate the cause of Jonghyun’s death and the reasons behind it, thus keeping me, Amber, Ju-hyun, Luna, and Vic under their care while getting our side.

We gave them our statements and what happened that lead to the untimely demised of Amber’s brother. Amber and Ju-hyun was taken to the hospital for physical examination as part of evidence. We also surrendered the gun that Luna used to shoot Jjong and the baseball bat plus the footage recorded in Amber’s GoPro when the kids flew it in the sky to search for Amber.

The issue about Jonghyun’s stalking activity on me for 3 years was never opened since it was Vic’s men who found out about it. I don’t want and Amber too to make the incident be sensationalize by the media. It’s enough that the video saw how Jonghyun confessed to his crime and the act of it. I asked Vic for the footages that her team discovered from Jjong’s server be deleted forever. We won’t be needing it and I’m not interested watching myself play Nintendo all day and sing in the showers.

Mom and Dad came from the airport aboard their private jet and their private lawyer who handled the case. Since the Prosecutors didn’t see any foul plays on his death since it was an act of self defense on our part. We were released by night time and no charges will be filed since Dad told them the family will not be suing anyone and admits the mistake of his son.  

Dad was devastated but he doesn’t show it fully. I know deep down inside he loves Jjong just as how much he loves Amber. Mom told me Dad was crying in the plane while on the way to Seoul saying sorry to Jjong because he failed him as his father. It wasn’t the reunion me and my in-laws expected but it’s okay. We stayed in the funeral house for 3 days and after that had his ashes be placed beside his mother.

Luna and I asked the University for an extension of our vacation. I asked Uncle Lee to cover my classes for another week while I keep my in-laws company. Uncle understood since he knows how they feel losing a child.

Then Amber and I took the opportunity to move my things to our new home. The house is already complete and Amber’s things were already there even before she went to the expedition. Dad said the house has always been intended for Amber ever since Jjong got the flat in New York before because he was based there.

Our home has its own library and some of Amber’s collections of old maps and artifacts are displayed in one room like in a museum. Well… some of it she got legally, some are… hehe… given to her by the elder Song.  

We haven’t told them our desire to build a family because we don’t want them to hope immediately. Much better to say it to them if the process is a success, I don’t want another heartbreak for the elders.

Luna disappeared for a week and I don’t know where she went. She just left a message in my voicemail saying she wants to have a solo trip and discover herself. The discovering part made me curious…

Ju-hyun I think went to visit her relatives here in Korea like she told me after Jjong’s funeral. She and Mom already talked asking for forgiveness, Mom accepted her again in the family since my in-laws watched the video footage of Jjong confessing that he is at fault for pushing Ju-hyun being more depressed than ever before. They felt responsible for the ordeal Ju-hyun had to endure before.

After 1 week

“So… what are your plans when you get back to L.A.?” I asked Ju-hyun while we wait for her boarding time in the airport. After visiting her relatives she decided to go back to L.A. because she has to iron some personal things out there before flying to New York. A job is waiting for her at the Communications and Marketing Department of Smithsonian Museum of Natural History.

She shifted in her seat thinking then smiled at me “Probably tell my Dad about the job I got and eventually ask him to buy a flat for me in New York so I have a place to stay in. I’m actually excited for this work… I’ve been waiting for so long to get it because when I was a kid my dream was to work there.” There was a twinkle in her eyes and it really showed excitement and gladness.

Luna was quiet beside me, unusually quiet actually. This is the first time she’s this quiet and has no comments in anything.

“Hey … you’re quiet..” I nudged her knee startling her. She was staring at air obviously not in the zone.

What happened to her?

“Luna!”

“Yah! I’m not deaf! I heard you!” she pouted at me and stood up facing Ju-hyun and me with a serious face. There’s something unusual on this Hobbit…

She’s fidgeting… her face is red… and sweating.

“Are you okay Luna?” Ju-hyun asked her worriedly. She opened her bag and took a pack of tissue pulling a few sheets before giving it to Luna “You look… red?”

What’s happening to this girl?!

She accepted the tissue and bowed at Ju-hyun before wiping the sweat on her face at the same time fanning her hand too. Luna looks so … nervous? For what?

Is she in some kind of trouble? Boy trouble again? She disappeared for a week….

Don’t tell me she met a guy again and fell in love in a week!

“Hey why are you nervous? Did something happened to you after that vacation of yours that’s why you’re acting strange?”

She started to laugh nervously making me raise my eyebrow at her. “Seriously Luna? What’s happening to you?” I stood up and placed my hand on her forehead checking if she’s sick. Her face feels hot and red… should I bring her to the hospital now?

“I…I’m okay K-krys… just umm… nothing. Never mind..” she shook her head brushing her hair back. Ju-hyun and I looked at each other and shrugged our shoulders in Luna’s weirdness. She stood up and draped her arm over Luna cooing “Hey Luna, don’t tell me you’re going to miss me that’s why you’re acting like that!”

I laugh at what Ju-hyun said waiting for Luna to laugh too but she was just… silent. She was looking down so I can’t see her face, when she looked up I saw sadness and nervousness on it.

Luna… what’s happening to you?!

“Oh! Hey honey! Ju-hyun, Luna!” Amber yelled from the crowd holding the box of donuts I asked her to buy on the way to the airport. She followed after her meeting in the university regarding the teaching job they were offering her for the next term.

She gave me a slow peck on my lips before brushing her nose on mine then gave the box of donuts to me. “Am I late?” she asked my cheek.

“Nope, just in time.” we sat again in the waiting area while eating the donuts and chatting, Amber asking Ju-hyun to give us a heads up if the Museum has a new find.

The remains of the Princesses we dug up last week from the site are already being examined by the experts. It will take months to complete all the needed facts before exhibiting it for all of Korea to see. The Chinese Government is saying that the remains of the Gongzhu, once proven that the skeleton really belongs to the Gongzhu should be transported back to China and be laid to rest in the Royal Tomb. That will be a problem, the two of them shouldn’t  be separated.

“Hey girls, I’ll just head out to the bathroom and wash my hands.” I turned to Amber who was the chocolate on her thumb like a kid and has a smudge on her chin. Cute.

“You too, Honey. Let’s wash your face you don’t look like a respectable Professor while eating.” I pinched her cheeks making her grin at me cutely while her thumb and stood up playfully wiping it on my cheeks. “Yah! Amber!”

“Come on let’s go. Ju-hyun’s flight will be called for boarding in 15 minutes…” we left Ju-hyun and Luna on the waiting area still eating. I took a glance at Luna and saw her stood up from her seat and sat beside Ju-hyun.

I wonder what’s happening with her?

Luna’s POV

Arrrrgghhhh! Luna! Control yourself!

You got this… just say what you want to say to her. The line you practiced, remember?

Gosh this is hard. I have never done this before EVER.

I was always the one being ask out by guy
